Character Interview: Matty Marcus from Training Season @LetaBlake #RLFblog #LGBT

    Training Season
    Title: Training Season
    Genre: Erotic M/M Romance
    Author: Leta Blake
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Figure skater Matty Marcus is willing to sacrifice everything
for his Olympic dream. Despite his unquestionable talent, Matty’s lack of discipline
cost him Olympic gold once before. Now the pressure’s on to do whatever it takes
to make the team again. Still recovering from an injury that nearly ended his career,
he needs a coach who can keep him in line, but top coaches don’t come cheap. Without
the backing of his federation, Matty can’t afford to stay in the game no matter
how badly he wants to win.
When a wealthy fan’s whim brings him to rural Montana for a lucrative house-sitting
gig over the winter, Matty does his best to maintain an elite-level training regimen.
Despite fears that his flamboyant style might not be well-received in these rugged
surroundings, the residents turn out to be surprisingly tolerant and welcoming.
Even more surprising, Rob Lovely, the handsome young rancher next door, proves to
be much more than a cowboy stereotype. Just as Matty requires a firm hand to perform
his best on the ice, Rob shows him how strong he can be when he relinquishes control
in the bedroom. Taking his new-found courage back into the rink, Matty drives himself
harder to find the inner fire he needs to go for gold.
But a powerful new love and the best sex Matty has ever had aren’t
going to win him a medal. Competition has a timetable, and to achieve his Olympic
dream, he’ll have to join his new coach in New York City,
leaving Rob and his life in Montana
behind. As he faces the ultimate test of his spirit, has Matty truly learned how
to win—on and off the ice—during his training season?

    Interview with Matty Marcus

    Tell us about yourself,
    please.
I’m the most fabulous figure skater on the ice today and I’m
determined to prove to everyone, but especially myself, that I have what it takes
    to get Olympic gold.
What is it that you want,
but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.
I want to be an Olympic champion at any cost. I owe it to myself
and to everyone who has supported me over the years. I want it more than I want
almost anything…maybe more than I want love.
    What’s your internal limitation?
Meaning, what is it about you that makes it so you cannot do what it is you need
    to do during this story?
I’m flamboyant and uncompromising in who I am. I’m a control
freak and I can’t accept that there are some things in life that I just can’t control,
even though that’s what I most need to find a way to embrace.
    What inner doubt causes
    you the most difficulty?
What if I can’t do it? What if I make the wrong choice?
    What’s your external complication?
In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
What if the judges who control whether or not I can achieve my
goal will never give it to me, no matter what I do? What if I choose one thing and
    lose another?
    Tell us about your significant
other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
Rob is lovely, warm, giving, loving…and knows how to take control
in bed. He accepts me just the way I am and I need someone like that in my life,
because I can’t seem to accept myself that way at all.
    What would that person
    say about you?
He’d say I’m a pain in his ass, I’m sure, but then he’d say that
I’m amazing and he’d smile bright as sunshine.
    What is your family like?
They’re pretty great, though sometimes I wonder why they let
me be so driven at such a young age. Sometimes I wonder why they allowed me to go
this far down the Olympic path knowing what it cost me.
    What special skills do
    you rely on?
Being fabulous, of course! And a great media smile.
    If someone from your past
showed up, who would you NOT want it to be, and why?
The hockey players who used to bully me in the locker room at
the rink. I’d rather not see those assholes ever again.
    Are you happy with the
way your story ended? Why or why not?
I’m happy, yes, because I’ve figured out what’s most important
in life and, believe it or not, it’s not a gold medal.

    About the Writer

    Why did you choose to
    write about this character?
Matty obsessed me from the beginning. He was mouthy and bratty
and so lovable that I have had a hard time letting him go.
What do you want to write
    next?
I’m wrapping up a four book series, a gay coming of age romance
that is set in the South. I will publish all four of them within the next year and
a half. I’m excited to finally bring those characters to the world because I’ve
been working on these books off and on for about ten years. I can’t wait for everyone
to meet Adam, Peter, Daniel, Minty, and Renee.
    What other character from
this book do you want to write about? Care to tell us why?
Angus and Bill from Training Season have been screaming at me
to explore their relationship for awhile. I love their relationship and I hope to
    get around to exploring them.
    Are any sequels planned
    for this book?
Yes, the aforementioned Angus/Bill book, but also a future book
with Matty and Rob. I’d love to see where they go after the end of Training Season.

    Author Bio

While Leta Blake would love to tell you that writing transports
her to worlds of magic and wonder and then safely returns her to a home of sparkling
cleanliness and carefully folded laundry, the reality is a bit different. For as
long as Leta can recall, stories have hijacked her mind, abducting her to other
lands, and forcing her to bend to the will of imaginary people. This absence from
reality results in piles of laundry and forgotten appointments. In between abductions,
Leta works hard at achieving balance between her day job, her writing, and her family.

    Interview with AJ Nuest

    Why did you write this
    book?
Well, I’ve always been in love with the fantasy romance genre,
and knew I would eventually take the plunge into trying to craft my very own fantasy
romance. So, one day, I just sat down and started writing. I guess you could say
I’d finally reached the place in my career where I just knew I was ready. A month
later, the first novella was completed and I had officially caught the fantasy bug.
A year after that, I’d turned the first installment into a four book series, and
now a spin-off is rumored to be in the works. ;-)
    What is your favorite
    genre to read?
Definitely fantasy with strong romantic elements. I just have
a thing for princes, I guess…or any swashbuckling hero that charges in to save
the day. I love the world building of fantasy romance, the complex plots and that
persistent element of “Oh no! How’re they going to get out of this fix?”
Fantasy authors always keep me guessing and I love that. There’s also a lot of external
conflict in fantasy romance (i.e. the characters are kept apart by circumstances
beyond their control) and I love that angsty-goodness.
    What is your favorite
character from fiction (not including your own characters)?
Jacqueline Carey wrote a two book series called The Sundering
    – Godslayer is Book One and Banewreaker is Book Two. The stories feature a hero
by the name of General Tanaros. He is not a good man. He is extremely conflicted
throughout the series, is deeply tortured, and lives with the bitter realization
that he’s made terrible mistakes in his life – even though he has good reason behind
these mistakes and continues on the same destructive path during the stories. There
is just something about his character that I completely fell in love with. To me,
he represents a intrinsic part of human nature. How maybe we would all go back in
time and do things differently if we had the chance. He represents our regrets…how
we wish things or circumstances would be different all while knowing we are powerless
to change them. It’s a brilliant, brilliant series I would highly recommend to everyone.
Read it. You will never be the same.
    Do you enjoy films and/or
TV shows? Which are your favorites?
I love both films and television shows, but I don’t really watch
much TV. I just don’t have the time. If I’m going to sit and watch, I usually rent
a movie or catch up on the programs I’ve recorded on the DVR. That being said, I’m
a huge Marvel fan and race to the theatre the minute any of those movies come out.
Bring on anything sci-fi as well…Transformers, Star Trek, etc. For television
I love Sleepy Hollow and Once Upon a Time in Neverland. Oh and I’m a HUGE Big Bang
    Theory fan.
    What are you working on
at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
I just finished the final installment of my fantasy romance series
for HarperImpulse entitled The Golden Key Chronicles. Rowena’s Key is the first
of four continuing novellas under this title. Right now, I’m working on a free read
that will be offered with the collection release on April 3rd. I also have two other
fantasy series clamoring for attention in my head. One is a three book fantasy under
the working title Branches of the Willow Tree, which was just contracted by Harper
this past week, and the other is a spin-off of The Golden Key Chronicles. I really
hadn’t planned on writing more in that series but, after receiving so many requests
from readers to continue, I folded. LOL
    Please tell us about your
    latest book.
Rowena’s Key is a time travel fantasy romance set in both modern
day Chicago and a 14th century realm based loosely
    on Kent.
Rowena is an antiques restorer who finds herself drawn to purchase an ancestral
armoire in order to retain a connection to her past, only to find her decision an
epic failure. The first evening the armoire is delivered to her condo, she discovers
a key inside a hidden compartment, and from there things go from strange to outright
bizarre. Not only are her initials stamped on the side of the key, later that night
the door opens and she finds herself face to face with a man who claims to be a
prince from another realm. While she’s very suspicious of Prince Caedmon—and, in
fact, believes the whole thing to be a set up conceived by her best friend, Oliver—as
Rowena learns more about Caedmon and his life, she finds she holds more than just
the secret to saving his kingdom. She is the answer behind a prophecy, and the key
    to unlocking his heart.

    Excerpt

This scene is taken from when Rowena and Caedmon first meet,
each of them standing on opposites of what she believes to be a computer monitor…
What was with this guy, with his sable,
shoulder-length hair and closely trimmed beard? His white shirt was best described
as puffy, with ballooning sleeves and wide, ruffled cuffs. The front hung open,
exposing the muscled contours of his beveled chest, the roughly stitched tails skimming
the thighs of his fitted, leather…breeches?
Oh, God. She chuckled and shook her
head. He had to be one of Ollie’s theater friends. Bravo for his stunning portrayal
of a swashbuckling swashbuckler. Too bad that also meant he was gay.
He lifted the sword in both hands
and turned a broad shoulder toward the mirror, the taut planes of his stomach easing
in and out with each controlled breath. A trail of dark hair arrowed down inside
the waistband of his pants, where his perfectly cupped manhood bulged for her inspection.
    Oh yes, too bad indeed.
“If you scheme to divert me with
your alluring attire and guileless stare, I’ll have you know an abundance of courtesans
await my nightly dalliance. I am not so easily swayed.”
Rowena inched a slow perusal of the
delectable landscape back up to his face. His dark eyes glittered in the candlelight,
and she mirrored his arched eyebrow. “Oh, really?”
Perhaps she’d pegged him wrong. Wouldn’t
    that be a treat?
She glanced down at her gauzy nightgown,
the flickering fire doing little to cover her rosy nipples, pert in the chilly air.
But he invaded her space with this theatrical exploit of his. What else did he expect
her to be wearing, showing up like this in the middle of the night?
    “You’d better be careful.”
She wagged a finger at him. “Or I’m apt to get busy with some serious despoiling
    all up in here.”
    “Enough, Sorceress!” He
lunged forward, the blade of his sword slicing the air when he aimed the silver
pommel straight at the screen. “Let us be done with this trickery. Name your
demands before I smash the glass and ensnare your bewitching guise for an eternity.”
A low laugh tickled the back of her
throat. Talk about living a role. Sheesh, take the drama down a notch. She stepped
close and ran a hand around the edge of the frame. The signal had to be streaming
live, what with his ability to interact with her, but there wasn’t a wire or a microphone,
heck, not even a screw in sight.
She stood back and crossed her arms,
shifting her weight onto one hip. Okay, she would bite, as long as Ollie promised
this whole escapade wouldn’t end up on YouTube.
    “Fine. You’re extremely gorgeous
and very talented. Seriously, you’ve got the whole English accent down perfect.
And while I appreciate all the work that went into this little program, it’s about
two in morning and I have to get up early for work. Tell Ollie I said good show,
props to the production crew and I’m nominating the wardrobe guy for an Oscar.”
There. That should call the evening
a wrap. She grabbed the edge of the door and swung it closed.
    “You wear Rowena’s Key.”
    She froze…and then tentatively eased
    the door back open.

Wanted: Romance Characters. Wounded Hero Apply Within @romancebysusan #RLFblog

    Girls’ Night Out

Welcome to RLF! Today’s guest post is by Susan Arden / Susan D Taylor.

It’s business as usual in writing
scorching romance. I power up the computer, drum my fingers, and
inhale. Time to find “him” and “her.” How about this time I
hand over the reins to you to locate a pair of lovers? Would you start with
an open casting call in which you hang a sign: hot men and women need apply?
Writing a romance requires that an
author open their heart and imagination in the creation of a pair of lovers. In
order for the lovers to exist within a story, I need a hook that gets me thinking…excited.
As a writer of nuclear heat-level romance, I begin with a visualization of a plot
line that begins in a physical spot. A church parking lot, a ranch, a stadium. Someplace
where two people might meet and fall in love. But that isn’t the place where the
story begins. It’s a trajectory point where I aim, more than likely a place about
sixty-percent of the way through the book where the characters hang out.
Once I get a feel for where the characters
and I are headed, I throw open the doors and the casting call begins and that means
it’s time to dig deep into their lives. The expectation for romance stories is that
these contain people who have attributes such as beauty, wit, strength, charisma
as well as a host of other attractive characteristics that are displayed throughout
the story—sky is the limit. But alas, every author knows that in loving our creations,
we must do our writer duty in our creating reflections of humanity by making them
human. And as humans, our lovers must have flaws.
So in writing, I draw from what I
know and as a past educator, I draw heavily on my education and classroom where
I had the honor and pleasure to spend my days with funny, energetic, sensitive,
stubborn students who were as varied the colors of the rainbow. But the one characteristic
they and I shared is we are learners…people who learn differently. I taught special
education and ironically have ADHD and facets of dyslexia. I understand what it
means to be reduced to a statistic and boxed into a category. Learners with special
needs require supports to actualize strengths to compensate for “things”
we don’t do so well. I can’t tell right from left, but instinctively know cardinal
direction regardless of where I’m at. I can do simple math like a calculator but
can’t understand high order math. I need to use a computer over pen and paper. I
read chunks of information but can’t read word for word. Numerical order and word
order are atypical or are repeated in the wrong order unless I close my eyes and
read from the picture in my mind.
In this go round in Girls’ Night Out
(GNO), I wanted to have a character who reflected those I know. Brett Gold has dysgraphia,
a form of dyslexia, and this helped to balance out extreme strength. Brett became
the hero with a wound (i.e., wounded hero archetype) in which that “flaw”
would affect him starting at a very young age. The hero in GNO had the love of a
parent to help him have the confidence to keep striving rather than to become embittered.
His dyslexia would give him perspective, frustrating him at times, but widen his
horizon to understand the suffering of others. Like the saying goes; bamboo is strong
for it bends in the whipping wind where an oak may crack in a strong storm.
So, in Girls’ Night Out the heroine, Cory
McLemore, is young and struggling to find her footing away from her over-protective
family when she encounters a man who seems to have the world by the tail. Brett
Gold, an NFL tight end isn’t the persona that he and the pro ball profession projects.
This is part sports romance and Western, and like any creature who bucks, there’s
a time for a heavy hand and there’s a time for giving some space, and that’s what
Brett does for Cory. There is spanking as this is an erotic romance and is utilized
by Brett with Cory in establishing structure. Yet Brett is more than the typical
alpha, he understands his lover’s need to find her authentic self where she requires
his support to allow her the opportunity to stretch her wings.
In writing the strong, capable hero,
a flaw of a disability such as learning difference can humanize someone who otherwise
might come off more like a God than a good guy, sweet enough to bring home to meet
    mom and dad.
    Namaste.

    Live Life. Love Intensely.
Brad loves fast horses, cars, and bikes. Life would be perfect

longtime friend and her family to work in their home, turning his world into a feudal
    mess.
He wants to hate the new arrivals and it doesn’t help that Kressa,

a scent that draws him to her, Kressa causes him more internal conflict than he
ever dreamed possible. He falls for her so deeply, he tells her a secret he’d never
even told his best friends – that he’s training to be a ninja warrior.
Kressa adores her country and loves hanging out with her many
cousins. News of the move to Massachusetts
comes as a shock to her. She refuses to be happy in this new place working as a

Despite her efforts, she finds herself desperately longing for
a friendship with the one boy who scowls at her. Matters are only made more complicated
when his family and hers clash. When he goes on a dangerous mission, she wonders,
