    Christmas Hope by Caroline Warfield

    Genre Historical Romance: Twentieth Century

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13

After two years at the mercy of the Canadian Expeditionary force and the German war machine, Harry ran out of metaphors for death, synonyms for brown, and images of darkness. When he encounters color among the floating gardens of Amiens and life in the form a widow and her little son, hope ensnares him. Through three more long years of war and its aftermath, the hope she brings keeps Harry alive. Rosemarie Legrand’s husband left her a tiny son, no money, and a savaged reputation when he died. She struggles to simply feed the boy and has little to offer a lonely soldier, but Harry’s devotion lifts her up. The war demands all her strength and resilience, but the hope of peace and the promise of Harry’s love keep her going.

In the confusion at war’s end, will their love be enough?

Know the Hero from Christmas Hope

Here are some fun questions to help us know your hero.

It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?

War has been described as long periods of boredom interspersed with intense excitement. Harry’s a reader, when he can find books that is his preferred escape, but it is hard when they rotate into the trenches. He used to write poetry but the war kicked it out of him.

What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?

He has no access to shopping, generally, but he has made friends with the fellows in the mess tent. Beans are the least disgusting army food. When he gets leave he looks for wine.

Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.

Anything but khaki, but he’s worn nothing else for two years when the book starts. He longs for a good clean white shirt.

Does he know how to fix things?

He learned many skills on his grandfather’s farm so he can fix a tractor—or truck—when needed. He cares for his rifle superlatively. He can repair Rosemarie’s barque as well. His delight in these things astounds his city-dwelling father who is grooming him for the law.

He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

Harry is attached to the Bible his grandmother sent with him if only because it reminds him of home and better times. When a soldier put it in the mud as mean joke, Harry took it down to the Somme to clean it. He ended up dropping it in the river and had to chase it almost all the way to Amiens. (Luckily he had leave.) It is how he met Rosemarie so his accident turned into a blessing.

How does he act around children he doesn’t know?

Harry loves kids. He developed rapport with Rosemarie’s little Marcel, age two, almost immediately. Marcel hero worships him.

What is he like first thing in the morning?

Silent and brooding. He wants coffee, the stronger the better.

How does he handle things when in a “proper” social situation?

Before the war he was at university in Ottawa. His father has ambitions for Harry and made sure his training in social niceties was perfect. His manners are excellent.

Valet or takes care of himself?

He is laughing hysterically over this. Even home in Calgary he had no personal servant, but in France? In the trenches?

    Necktie/cravat or open shirt?

Neither. Army issue, buttoned to the neck, high collar, no tie.

    Sleeves buttoned or rolled up?

Buttoned. Off duty, when private, he prefers them rolled up. When he can get to Rosemarie’s cottage, he relaxes.

    Powdered wig or natural hair?

    Natural Hair

    Carriage or horseback?

He has access to neither. He walks, begs rides on the back of a wagon. When he can, he travels by boat down the Somme.

Thanks for helping us get to know your hero!
