Marcia James writes hot, humorous romances featuring heroines

of America contests before selling her first comic romantic suspense, At Her Command.
In her eclectic career, she has directed submarine training videos, organized celebrity-filled
nonprofit events, and had her wedding covered by People Magazine. After years of
dealing with such sexy topics as how to safely install traffic lights, she is enjoying
“researching” and plotting her novels’ steamy love scenes with her husband
and hero of many years.

What’s your favorite down-home
family style meal?

From childhood, my favorite comfort food has been meatloaf with
mashed potatoes, followed closely by chicken and dumplings.

What is your go-to meal
when you dine out?

I prefer to eat several appetizers (usually interesting things
like steamed edamame or pork belly tacos) vs. getting a full entree. The exception
is when I’m at an Italian restaurant and want to take part of a pasta dish home
for yummy leftovers. I also enjoy Mexican and Asian dishes.

Describe the perfect vacation.

I love any relaxing vacation that offers wine tastings, gourmet
restaurants, and an opportunity to play video poker at a casino. That’s why we’ve
visited Napa Valley, CA; Las Vegas, NV; and Scottsdale, AZ numerous times. I’m not
a beach person. I’d prefer visiting the mountains, like Breckenridge, CO, to a Florida
beach vacation.

What kinds of things do
you read when you’re researching a new book?

For research, I read articles and books, but I also talk with
people who are in the professions my hero and heroine have chosen or who have knowledge
of some aspect of my work-in-progress. For example, I’ve spoken to crime lab techs
for my comic romantic suspense, At Her Command. And I’ve interviewed several sex
therapists for Sex and the Single Therapist, the first in my “Dr. Ally Skye”
funny romantic mystery series. My next novella, “Racing Hearts,” is the
first in a series about a therapy dog training facility, and I’m arranging to watch
the classes at a local facility that trains dogs for people with emotional, health,
and disability challenges.

If the hero of your latest
book called you on the phone, what would be a perfect ringtone for him?

The hero in “Love Unleashed” is a radio DJ with the
on-air nickname of “Rabid Ron” Hart. So I imagine he’d enjoy a ringtone
of the wolf-howling chorus from Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London.”
