Prejudice: A Problem as Old as Time @LMBrownAuthor #RLFblog #LGBT

There is one theme that is common in many gay romance
stories, and that is the prejudices against homosexual people and how they deal
with the barriers caused by prejudices.
As though who have read earlier books in my series will
already know, while same-sex relations were forbidden for the merpeople of
Atlantis it wasn’t due to any religious reason, but rather because the race is
close to extinction, and the mating rituals imposed by the rulers of the sunken
city of Atlantis were introduced to try to prevent them from dying out
    entirely.
That doesn’t mean that prejudices are going to be completely
absent from the series and in Shifting Currents the divisions between the
merpeople and the Atlanteans who once inhabited the city are thrown into the
    limelight.
In this post I am going to go into a bit of the historical
background as to how the issues between merfolk and the human Atlanteans came
    about.
In the history of my world Atlantis didn’t just vanish below
the ocean in some cataclysmic event or devastating storm. Instead, it was
deliberately hidden on the sea floor by the Atlantean gods in an attempt to
save the humans who worshiped them from the coming war of other ancient
peoples. The Atlanteans were gifted with the power to survive at the great
depths and continued to live in the city that had been their home for so many
    years.
The merpeople, who lived in the waters around Atlantis,
welcomed the Atlanteans and helped teach them to farm the fruits of the ocean
and thrive in the water, just as they did.
Unfortunately, when two such vastly different races are
thrown together in close quarters, there will always be issues. The two
communities, while living in the same waters, never fully integrated, and there
were plenty of Atlanteans who thought the merpeople shouldn’t live in Atlantis.
Atlantis for the Atlanteans became the common cry from those who saw the
merpeople not as friendly allies, but as half-animal creatures to be looked
down upon and driven out of the sacred city of Atlantis.
Two races, both seeing their claim on the land/waters as
equally valid, were going to come to blows sooner or later.
Delwyn, a merman with the power to see into the past, and
Fabian, an Atlantean living hundreds of years before Delwyn was born, are going
to have to overcome these prejudices if they intend to make a life together.

    Shifting Currents by LM Brown

Can a merman and an Atlantean, separated by centuries and
    prejudices, find love together?
Merman Delwyn is an Oracle of the past. He loves nothing
better than observing the comings and goings of those who lived centuries
before he was born. His favorite time period to visit is when both Atlantean
and mer inhabited the sunken city of Atlantis, and his guilty pleasure is
watching lovers come together in passion. Secure in the knowledge that no one
can see him when he’s viewing the past, nothing can prepare Delwyn for the
moment Fabian, an Atlantean living in the past, speaks to him.
Fabian is a man with divided loyalties. The demi-god son of
the Goddess of Sea Creatures has sworn to serve the Goddess of Prophecy as her
Oracle of the present. His unique status gives him the power to see anything in
the present, including the mysterious merman voyeur from the distant future.
Despite the centuries that separate them, Delwyn and Fabian
find they have a lot in common and quickly form a friendship that both hope one
day will become something more. But before they can be together in the present,
Delwyn and Fabian must unravel the mysteries of the past.
Only time will tell if the truth about the long-since
vanished Atlanteans will bring them together or tear them apart, as the battle
for the sunken city of Atlantis begins.

    About the Character

    Name: Kyle
    Age: 22
    Gender: Male
Birthplace: Somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean
    Profession: Bodyguard
    Ethnicity/Species (if not human): Merman
Describe his/her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include
any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars:
Kyle is quite pale since he spends the majority of his time under
the water and away from the rays of the sun. He has brown hair which is cropped
short. He has found having long hair tends to get in the way when you live underwater.
His eyes are a silvery blue and an exact match in colour to his tail and fins. The
constant swimming has given him excellent upper body strength. From the waist up
he has a typical swimmer’s build. On land he is fully human and stands a little
under six feet tall, not that measurements mean much in the ocean.
Who is the significant other in your character’s life?
Kyle is torn between two different men. Prince Finn, heir to
the throne of the sunken city of Atlantis, is a merman like Kyle and Jake Seabrook
is a human living in England.
    How does your hero dress?
Naked is the preferred mode of dress
for Kyle, though he is learning that being out and about in England does require
him to be covered up to a certain extent. He dresses under protest.
What is your character’s viewpoint on wealth? Not necessary,
nice to have, important, obtain at all costs?
Kyle has very little concept of money
since it isn’t used under the ocean. On land he is actually very wealthy, although
he didn’t realize it at first. The longer he stays on land, the more he will have
to get used to things like money, but thankfully for him the funds he has are enough
that he can live comfortably for the rest of his life, even if he never does learn
the value of money. I think he will because he’s a pretty fast learner.
    Is he close to family?
Kyle looks up to his father and hope
to follow in his footsteps as the leader of the clan. He is close to his mother
and keeps a watchful eye over his younger sister. Making the right choices for his
family is of paramount consideration for Kyle, even at the cost of his own happiness.
If someone from your character’s past showed up, who would he
most want it to be, and why?
Kyle would most like to see his mother,
Maurissa. The oceans are dangerous places and although he understands her decision
to swim away from the safety of Atlantis, he would like to know she is well.
Can your hero keep a secret? If not, why not? If yes, why?
Kyle isn’t generally a secretive person,
but there is one secret which he can keep very well, that of being a merman. Of
course there are sometimes circumstances where his secret is revealed because Kyle
is the sort of person who will do the right thing even if it means revealing what
    he is.
What is your character’s biggest need at the beginning of the
    story?
After a devastating shark attack on
his nomadic community Kyle’s biggest need becomes finding a safe haven for his people.
Even if it means giving up any chance of love.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

    What do you wish your
writer had not told others about you?
I wish she hadn’t told everyone I’m a merman, but thankfully
she has done it in a way that it makes me appear as only a character in a work of
    fiction.
    Was there anything your
writer discovered about you that was a surprise to one or both of you?
My writer expected me to sit around pining over Finn when he
broke my heart. She definitely didn’t expect me to fall for someone else.
    What do you wish your
    writer would write next?
I want her to write my first lover, Dax’s story. Although we
parted on good terms I want to know that he is well and has found someone to love.
Unfortunately she tells me that although she is keeping tabs on Dax, his story isn’t
    the next one.
    What other character from
your book do you think your writer should write a book about? Care to tell us why?
Although he scares me by what he can do, I would like to know
more about Caspian. I’m just not sure he is the type to get all loved up with someone
like the rest of us. He’s not exactly sociable.
    Is there anything you’d
like to say to your writer?
I know my story isn’t over yet, but could you at least give me
a hint about what is to come?
