    Interview with Esmerelda

    What’s your external complication?
In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
    Santiago,
in a single word. Oh, I love him — always have — but he’s…complicated. And he’s
burned me before. So when I returned to Puerto
Vallarta and found him — literally — sleeping in my bed,
    it was…freaky!
    Tell us about your significant
other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
    Santiago,
again! I already mentioned that he’s complicated but at the heart of him is the
most wonderful belief in the people he cares about. He didn’t have the best childhood
and his family is, well, dysfunctional. But he has created a family in the people
    at the villa and me.
    What would that person
    say about you?
He would say I’m wound a little too tight, but that this sundress
I’m wearing will help cool me off. Ha!
    What is your family like?
My parents died in a car crash when I was young, so there was
only me and my aunt, Constance. She is everything to me, and now we’ve added Santiago to our family unit
    and I couldn’t be happier.
    Are you happy with the
way your story ended? Why or why not?
Yes, I got the guy, didn’t I? And together we saved Casa Constance.
Things aren’t perfect, but we’re working on that.

    About the Writer

    Why did you choose to
    write about this character?
I couldn’t not write Esmerelda’s story. She and Saint deserved
to get things right. They were both wounded by their childhoods and it was so much
fun to help them set things right.
    Was there anything you
discovered about this character that was a surprise to you?
How unbusinesslike Esme really is. She puts up a good front,
but at the core, she’s fun and silly and adventurous.
    When you wrote about this
character, what made you the most happy? What made you the most sad?
Seeing her come alive again, try new things again made me the
happiest, and even though her childhood still makes me sad, seeing her come to terms
with it and learn from what happened also made me extremely happy.
    What other character from
this book do you want to write about? Care to tell us why?
I really want to tell Tobias’ story next. He’s Santiago’s brother and he’s
very tightly wound, but in a different way than Saint is. I need to figure him out!
    Are any sequels planned
    for this book?
As a matter of fact, yes! I’m just now digging into Tobias’ story
and I’m hoping to have it out to readers in the early spring.
    Is there anything you’d
like to say to your readers?
I love and appreciate you all so much! Thank you for coming along
    on this crazy, writer ride!

    Author Bio

Once upon a time, Kristina Knight spent her days running from
car crash to fire to meetings with local police–no, she wasn’t a troublemaker,
she was a journalist. Her career took her all over the United States, writing
about everything from a serial killer’s capture to the National Finals Rodeo. Along
the way she found her very own Knight in Shining Cowboy Boots and an abiding love
for romance novels. Kristina writes contemporary romance with a smattering of sass,
sex and (of course) drama, and she loves hearing from readers. And just like the
characters from her favorite books, she’s living her own happily ever after.

What are your main characters’ names, ages and occupations?
Santiago (Saint) and Esmerelda (Esme), ages 29 and 26. Saint
is an ex-surfer, Esme is a bed and breakfast manager.

    Interview

How did you get your start in the industry?
The Saint’s Devilish Deal is my second book, so I kind of feel
like I’m still getting my start. I’ve been telling stories for as long as I can
remember, and it’s an amazing rush to know that I can share my stories with people
    I’ve never even met.
What is the most important thing you do for your career now,
as compared to when you first started writing?
Scheduling. I know, not a sexy answer. Before I was published
I could write for me, as it fit into my schedule. Now I have deadlines set by other
people so it’s important that I turn everything off except the writing from time
    to time.
What websites do you visit daily?
Facebook and Twitter are my writers-crack. I’m totally addicted.
I spend the bulk of my time ‘talking’ to fictional characters or dealing with toddler
drama…so checking in with real people is heaven. Plus there are usually pictures
of shirtless men to be found.
If you could choose anyone to be your mentor who would it
    be?
It would totally be Nora Roberts. She is amazeballs. I have no
idea how she writes all the books that she does, how she meets her deadlines, and
she has a full family life, her family has the Inn. I’d take massive notes, wear
out my highlighter and probably she’d toss me out of her office on my bum in about
five minutes … but those 5 minutes would be excellent.
If you could give the younger version of yourself advice what
    would it be?
That I can do this writing thing. I was under the assumption
(for a lot of years) that you had to have had This Life to be a ‘real writer’ –
and since I’ve lived in smallish towns my whole life I was quite certain I didn’t
have This Life. Now I realize I did all along.
Do things your family or friends do ever end up in a book?
The funny stuff, yeah. And we have a lot of goofy things happen
to us. I do change the names to protect the innocent, though.
What are some jobs you’ve done before (or while) you were
    a writer?
I’ve been a counter-girl at McDonalds, a radio DJ (still am),
a TV reporter, a freelance journalist, a babysitter, a mom (still am and it’s the
hardest job I’ve ever had), a retail girl…the list goes one, but we’ll stop there.
Which of your books would you recommend to someone who doesn’t
normally read your genre, and why?
The Saint’s Devilish Deal – I just love this book. I like that
the characters are a little outside the box, I like that there is family drama and
illness involved. I just love the book.
What kind of books do you read when taking a break from your
    own writing?
I read a LOT of romance, across all sub-genres..and I love John
Grisham. He’s great for getting my mind off my own books.
What do you think is the future of epublishing?
I think publishing in general is in a state of change and I think
it’s a good change. Epublishing is a great way for readers to find new authors,
try out new genres and find a renewed love of reading without breaking the bank.
Some of the most innovative books I’ve read have been from e-pubbed writers, and
I can’t wait to get back to my Kindle and find some more.
What was the proudest moment of your life so far?
I should say graduating college or publishing my first book…but
my proudest moment is the day we finalized the adoption of our daughter. My husband
and I expected a long, drawn-out day, and it was the fastest 5 minutes of our lives.
But I’m so happy that we stuck out the adoption road. I wouldn’t change our family
    for the world.
Imagine you get to go on a dream vacation, but you have only
one hour to pack and leave, and it starts as soon as you finish this interview.
What will you take with you and where will you go?
bathing suits, sunscreen, my husband & daughter and we’re
totally hitting a sunny, warm beach with some waves.
Where were you at midnight, on December 31st when the new
    century started?
I was standing in a ballroom in North Platte, Nebraska with my
camera equipment getting ready for a special report for the nightly news. I was
so tired and all I wanted to do was kick off my heels and have an adult beverage,
but instead I got to scream into a microphone with no idea what the anchors back
at the station were saying to me.
Which statement is more like you:
    “I am a ten-countries in ten-days tour vacation,
because I do things as fast as possible.”
“I am a vacation spa because I am laid back and relaxed.”
This is so me. I make my family crazy because it takes a LOT
to get me overly freaked out. Once I’m freaked, though, there is no coming back.

    Please Fill in the Blanks

I love pizza with Canadian bacon.
    I’m always ready for vacation.
    When I’m alone, I read
You’d never be able to tell, but I’m usually daydreaming.
If I had a halo it would be crooked.
If I could fly I’d never come down from the clouds.
I can never leave a fortune cookie unopened because
I have to know what’s inside.
