  • Sci Fi World,  Science Fiction Romance

    In My Own Shadow by Susan A Royal @susanaroyal #RLFblog #SciFi #romance

Today’s featured book is In My Own Shadow by Susan A Royal Tell us about your story. We’ll have other questions in a moment.

Talk about the worst day ever! Lara lets her friend Carrie talk her into a blind date, only it turns out the handsome stranger waiting for Lara after work isn’t Carrie’s cousin after all. And, when they’re chased through a portal to another world, Lara realizes Rhys really is out of this world.

Lyra, her alternate in another dimension, has left clues to the whereabouts of the Book of Secrets explaining the mystery of time travel in Lara’s subconscious. Or so Rhys thinks. Power-hungry telepaths who pursue them will stop at nothing to get it, even if it means breaking Lara’s will. To complicate matters, Lara gets tangled up in her feelings for Rhys while exploring her connection with Lyra.

With Rhys as her guardian, a bear of a man named Azle to guide her, and the spirit of Lyra haunting her dreams, Lara must find the Book of Secrets before it falls into the hands of those who want its power. Only then can she return to her world safely.

What species/races of people are in your book?
    Humans.
Do you have non-sentient creatures or animals in your story? If so, what are they?
    No.

    Language and Culture

What languages are spoken in your story universe?
Telepaths exist in this world, and some of them are power hungry enough to invade other peoples’ minds to get the information they want.
If you created a language for the story, what is it called?
In the culture of your story world, what is different from ours?
It’s supposed to be run like a business. But Yusel is the head of the Council and treated like royalty. He considers the representatives from other parts of the country as his noblemen and women. Everyone else lives like peasants, with the exception of the desert people, who keep to themselves and follow their own rules.
What special laws are important to your story world?
Representatives are part of the council who gather at the citadel to make sure all laws in the book passed down from the Ancients are followed. But they have discovered another books exists. And some of them will do anything to get it.
What rights (such as equality) are challenges for your characters?
All Lara wants to do is find The Book of Secrets so she can go home. Everyone wants answers, and they’ll do anything to get them. She has to fight to keep them from getting inside her head because she’s afraid she’ll lose her identity.

    Story Setting

Describe one of the worlds where your story takes place.
In My Own Shadow takes place in an alternate reality where Lara’s double is Lyra. They look alike and have similar personalities. Only Lyra has gone off the deep end. She craves power, while all Lara wants is for her life to return to normal. Her world has beautiful places like the Citadel, a city in the clouds, and desolate places like Elusion, a barren wasteland where nothing is what it seems.
    What makes this world unique?
Portals can be used to travel to other parts of the world. And sometimes the location of the portal itself is fluid. It moves from place to place.
Tell us about the age of the culture in your story, i.e., are the people part of an ancient civilization, a newly formed group within an established culture, pioneer colonists, etc.
The people who rule are descendants of an ancient civilization. Supernatural beings inhabit the planet (banshees, vampires, etc) along with animals that have special abilities, but the majority of the population is ordinary people.
What food or drink is available to your characters?
Most of their journey they are living off the land, so they eat whatever game is available (fish and something similar to rabbit) When they arrive at the citadel, they eat gourmet foods and sip exotic drinks of all colors. When they join the caravan one of the pilgrims offers Lara fruit he calls Bliss which that her hallucinations.
In what ways was it helpful to have a map (or sketch of one) for your story? (Provide a link to an image, if available).
I didn’t do a map, because they “jumped” all over the planet, both above and below the surface.

    Character Physiology

What are the physical characteristics of the race/species of your main characters?
All the characters are human. Any special abilities are mental.
What physical differences exist in the way your characters communicate (i.e., telepathy, empathic abilities, etc.) with each other?
Lyra is Lara’s double from an alternate reality. She visits Lara’s subconscious without her knowledge or permission. That’s what gets Lara into trouble to begin with. Her father, Yusel, and her half-brother Rund have similar abilities. They can read other people’s minds at will unless they are strong enough to block them.

    Sharing World Building Expertise

Please give us three tips you find helpful when creating a story world:
Creating your own world makes for a fantastic journey. You get to make all the rules. BUT you have to remember to follow them. If you don’t (a) it will trip you up down the road and/or (b) some reader will let you know your error right away!
When you researched for your story setting, what kinds of things did you learn?
I learned about mental telepathy, martial arts, banshees, vampires, underground caverns to mention just a few.
What things should writers avoid when building a science fiction world?
I can’t answer for everyone, but I try to avoid making it too complicated. Readers want to be entertained. Caught up in the story. They don’t want to bog down in details. I have to make sure I describe it in detail without boring my reader.
Share a resource you found helpful when researching for your story.
I read a lot of science fiction, but while I was writing this story I paid special attention to each author’s world building with these things in mind. How much setting up should I do? How do I avoid info-dumping? How can I make it believable in spite of the fact that it’s fantasy?
What’s your advice for writers who want to create a solid background for their story world?
I’m not much of a plotter, but when I was writing one of the settings (the part about the citadel, for example) I made a checklist of important things I needed to remember. When I was in the middle of a scene I referred back to it for continuity.

  • Science Fiction Romance

Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2 by Multiple Authors #RLFblog #SciFi #Romance

Today’s featured book is Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2, a science fiction romance by twelve best-selling and award-winning authors.

Dogs for Heroes, and Pets in Space

Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2 by Multiple Authors #RLFblog #SciFi #RomanceHi, there, I’m Carol Van Natta, science fiction and fantasy romance author. What do dogs for heroes and pets in space have to do with romance? Everything!

First, there’s a new anthology coming out called Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2. Twelve authors came together to write science fiction romance stories all around the theme of pets in space. When we humans finally manage to explore the stars, of course we’ll take pets. I may have got carried away in the number of pets I included in “Pet Trade,” my contribution to the anthology, but I couldn’t pick just one.

Pets provide humans with love, companionship, and service. It’s that latter that attracted us Pets in Space authors to a charity called Hero Dogs. They raise, train, and place service dogs and other highly skilled canines, free of charge, to disabled U.S. veterans, to improve the quality of life and help them regain independence. Current medicine has come a long way in making catastrophic injuries survivable, but we still have a ways to go in treating PTSD, prosthetic technology, and permanent disabilities. Hero Dogs not only places the dogs, but provides lifetime support of the partnerships. Sounds a lot like love to me.

Authors Veronica Scott and Pauline B. Jones organized the anthology. They thought it’d be fun to mix scifi romance and heroic pets, and to see what different authors would come up with using the same theme. They agreed they wanted to donate to a charity that helped animals and veterans. Hero Dogs was the perfect fit for the group, since all of us have pets and personal connections to veterans. I begged and pleaded asked politely to be allowed to join the party.

I asked some of the other authors as to why this subject and why this charity. Veteran and current jet pilot Susan Grant said, “As a veteran myself, I think what Hero Dogs is doing to help veterans is so important. As a pet lover, I know the special bond between humans and animals can heal the deepest wounds. As an author, I couldn’t pass up the chance to write about that special bond.”

NY Times and USA Today best-selling author S.E. Smith said, “As the daughter of a disabled vet, I can appreciate how much having a furry companion enhances the quality of life for those struggling with day-to-day activities. Hero Dogs reminds us there are many wonderful ways to help others.”

Author Cara Bristol said, “Everyone has or had had a pet at one point in their lives. If we were going to travel into space, of course, we’d want to take our furry companions with us. So, to me, sci-fi romance and pets was a fun blend. Besides relating to pets, we can relate to heroes. These are the men and women who gave their all for their country. Supporting Hero-Dogs is a great way to give back to the heroes who need our help now.”

Laurie Green said, “It’s inspiring to know my fictional StarDogs are helping support Hero Dogs and all the wonderful things these service animals do for our veterans. The amazing healing power of animal companions is something I believe in.”

Sabine Priestley said, “Like so many, I have friends and family that suffer from PTSD. Animals have the ability to affect our energies in ways science doesn’t fully understand. The group of authors is outstanding and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

The pets are back! Embrace the Romance: Pets in Space 2, featuring twelve of today’s leading Science Fiction Romance authors, brings you a dozen original stories written just for you! Join in the fun, from the Dragon Lords of Valdier to a trip aboard award-winning author, Veronica Scott’s Nebula Zephyr to journeying back to Luda where Grim is King, for stories that will take you out of this world! Green, Sabine Priestley, Jessica E. Subject, Carol Van Natta, and Alexis Glynn Latner as they share stories and help out Hero-Dogs.org, a charity that supports our veterans!

Ten percent of the first month’s profits go to Hero-Dogs.org. Hero Dogs raises and trains service dogs and places them free of charge with US Veterans to improve quality of life and restore independence.

Meet Alys de Montfort from Heart of Honor by Alexa Aston @AlexaAston #RLFblog #medievalromance

Meet Alys de Montfort from Heart of Honor by Alexa Aston @AlexaAston #RLFblog #medievalromanceMeet Alys de Montfort from Heart of Honor, Knights of Honor Book 5, a new medieval historical romance.
    Age:18
    Gender: female
    Birthplace: Kinwick Castle, Southern England
    Profession: healer
    Ethnicity: Caucasian
Please provide a physical description of your character.
She has her mother’s long, chestnut hair and sapphire blue eyes and is tall and slender—but strong physically because of the work she does. She is a healer and knows much about herbs and creating medicines. People come from afar for her to treat them. She is happiest when caring for others and enjoys domestic tasks. She never become flustered, even if there’s a crisis. She’s also good with a sword and loves to ride her horse. She has a well of patience and is a good listener.
Who is the significant other in her life?
The man she thought she could never have—Kit Emory.
What special skills does your character rely on?
From the time she was young, Alys followed her mother, Merryn de Montfort, around. Merryn taught her daughter everything she knows about herbs and the healing arts. Alys surpassed her mother’s knowledge and even served as a lady-in-waiting at the royal court, where both King Edward and Queen Philippa would call upon her to address their aches and pains.
Are any of his skills a source of pride? Embarrassment? Which ones and why?
Poor Alys can’t carry a tune, though she does enjoy music. Instead of singing, she’ll hum from time to time.
What is your character’s family like?
Alys is the oldest child of Geoffrey and Merryn de Montfort. This is a close family, with six children and loving parents. She is barely older than her twin, Ancel, and she never lets him forget that. Alys has mothered her younger siblings—Hal, Edward, Nan, and Jessimond—and will make a wonderful mother to her own children.
If someone from your character’s past showed up, who would he most want it to be, and why?
This is actually the crux of Heart of Honor. Alys meets Sir Kit Emory at Windsor Castle when she is only twelve and fostering with the queen. Kit helps Alys through a crisis but both leave court soon after. Alys thinks of Kit fondly over the years, though she tries not to, knowing he was betrothed to a loathsome girl of her acquaintance and should be married by now. When she finds a badly-injured Kit on the road near Kinwick, Alys brings him home to nurse him back to health. When she discovers that Kit’s head injury has given him amnesia, she’s faced with a dilemma—tell him who he is and lose him again, forever—or selfishly keep the secret to herself and hope to make a life with him.
What is your character’s biggest need at the beginning of the story?
At the beginning of Heart of Honor, Alys is trying to find her place in the world. She is wondering if she is meant for marriage, as are most noblewomen, or if she should forsake it and dedicate her life to healing others.
What is your heroine’s breaking point?
After Kit’s memory returns and he finds out Alys knew who he was all along and kept it from him. Because of that, he’s done with her—which breaks her heart.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

Why do you think your writer chose to write about you?
Alexa always intended to tell all of the de Montforts’ love stories. She’s already written about my parents, Geoffrey and Merryn, and how they came together, as well as three of our cousins (Raynor, Elysande, and Avelyn). I’m lucky enough to be the first of Geoffrey and Merryn’s children that she is giving an HEA to! She’s hard at work on my twin brother’s story. I can’t wait to discover who she’ll pair Ancel with . . .
Why do you think your writer loves to write?
Alexa enjoys creating pairs of lovers who come together because she likes to bring out the best in others. When her heroes and heroines meet, they are better people for having come to know and love one another.
What do you wish your writer would write next?
Write my brothers’ and sisters’ stories, of course! I love Kit so very much and see how he’s enriched my life. I can’t wait for Ancel, Hal, Edward, Nan, and Jessimond to find their soul mates, too. Alexa’s promised me all of those love stories will unfold in 2018.
What other character from your book do you think your writer should write a book about? Care to tell us why?
I have a soft spot for Gilbert, our captain of the guard. He’s been loyal to the de Montforts for a very long time and helped me learn how to use a sword. Gilbert deserves to find true love.
Is there anything you’d like to say to your writer?
Thank you for making me a strong woman, one who nurtures and heals and has a large, loving family—but most of all, Alexa, I thank you for bringing Kit back to me. He is the love of my life and we plan on celebrating that love and treasuring it always.
Tell us about Heart of Honor.
1375 A.D. – When Sir Christopher “Kit” Emory’s beloved mother falls ill, he decides to seek the help of someone he met briefly at the royal court years ago—Lady Alys de Montfort, a renowned healer despite her young age. While traveling to her home at Kinwick Castle, Kit is accosted by a band of highwayman, who beat and rob him, leaving him to die. Fortunately, an escort party comes across him and Lady Alys insists they take the stranger home so she can use her skill in the healing arts to save his life.
The man awakens and has no memory of his identity, but Alys believes he might be Kit Emory, a young man she’d met once when she was a young girl. Kit comforted her when the queen died and Alys never forgot his kindness to her. Alys does what she can to jog Kit’s memory, even as she struggles with her growing attraction to him, knowing Kit was betrothed and must now be wed. Kit also finds his desire deepening for Alys, but he doesn’t know his own name, much less if he has a wife or family. Until he recalls who he is, he refuses to commit his heart to Alys.
Once Kit regains his memory and realizes he is free to pursue Alys, their road to love is anything but smooth.
Join Kit and Alys as they overcome events that continue to tear them apart and threaten the love they have for one another.
