this is your first book?
No, it’s my, uh… <quickly visits Amazon to count> eleventh book. I’m very bad at tracking numbers (don’t ask how old I am, because I’ll have to calculate it each time, and I might do the math wrong). Shift of Destiny is my third paranormal romance, and more are on the way. I also have a space opera series that starts with Overload Flux.
this book is part of a series?
Yes, it’s true! The Ice Age Shifters series features action, magic, and of course, romance. And sexy prehistoric shifters who find their mates. The first book is Shifter Mate Magic, set in 1993. Shift of Destiny, book 2, is set in present day, and involves more of the magical sanctuary town that was introduced in book 1.
you lost sleep while writing this book?
No, I don’t tend to lose sleep about writing books. My cats are the main culprit for sleep loss, what with starting epic battles, or licking noses or fingertips, or trying to get under the covers, or pushing the resident mad scientist off the bed entirely so they get the warm spot.
you did research for this book?
Yes, I do research for all my books because I love learning new things. I made the sleep-deprived resident mad scientist drive me to the southern Wyoming mountains so I could take pictures for where the sanctuary town is, and I have lots of reference photos and articles for extinct Ice Age animals. Also, too, I researched the Tunguska event, Tarot cards, and 1920’s residential house architecture.
some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)
Yes, quite a few of the characters in Shift of Destiny are not human. In addition to a sexy male who turns into a prehistoric lion, there’s a polar fairy (not to be confused with their mortal enemies, the arctic elves), an ogre, a golem, a dark elf, a wraith, plus shifters galore. The sanctuary town is a safe place for all sorts of magical creatures.
this book has more than one genre?
Yes, if you count “paranormal” and “romance” as separate. I automatically assume all paranormal stories are romance unless someone tells me otherwise. Someday, I plan to write a paranormal space fantasy romance, to cover all the bases at once. ?
you speak more than one language?
Yes, sort of. I can get by in Spanish, but I don’t have anyone to practice with, so my vocabulary has melted away. I have a good ear for accents, so I can *sound* like I’m fluent in most languages, but this gets me in trouble when people assume I’m not just repeating a string of sounds.
you grew up where you live now?
No, but close. I grew up in Denver, went to Austin, TX and Los Angeles, CA for college, then moved back to Colorado, but 70 miles north of Denver in Fort Collins. It’s a pretty good place to live, all in all.
you love to read?
Hell, yes. As with many of my author friends, I don’t have as much time for reading as I’d like, because I’m usually writing, but I dearly love to read. I’m planning a few vacation days in September where my main activity will be tackling the virtual Mount Everest that is my TBR pile.
you are never late?
Yes, it’s true, I’m rarely late, and am usually early. This does not count acts of nature (e.g., the recent downpour that temporarily flooded our streets), acts of humans (some the idiot who to beat the light and caused an accident), or acts of cat (“look at me—I’m free, and you can’t catch me!”).
you love pizza?
I’d say I merely like pizza—it’s not something I’d eat every week, even if it was a white pizza with ham and pineapple. I would go for Chinese or Indian food every week if I could.
you love sushi?
Yes, I do, but I’m picky about what’s in it—no cucumbers, no avocado, no nothing spicy-hot, so it’s hard to find in the comparatively small town where I live.
you have a pet?
Yes, I have six cats. I know, I know, it makes us the crazy cat people down the street, but it’s what the cat gods gave us. Five of our cats (two gray, two striped, one Tonkinese who is the Empress of the Universe) are rescues, and all six are as eccentric as can be. Why did you write this book?
While I was writing another book Jenny, part of the Beach Brides series, I couldn’t stop thinking about Josh Cooper, a secondary character who had a really bad first date with Jenny. Although that’s only mentioned briefly, I wanted to know more about Josh and his struggles. When I was given the opportunity to write for the Indigo Bay Sweet Romance series, Josh popped back into my head. I wanted to tell his story and knew Indigo Bay was the perfect world to do that.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I love reading sweet contemporary romance. I think that’s why I love to write it.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
The Stand by Stephen King is my favorite novel so I’d have to say Nick Andros, with a couple other characters from that story coming in a close second and third.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on a Christmas story that will be out in mid-October. It’s not part of any of my series so it’s been fun creating a new town and introducing the residents who live there.
What books will we see from you in coming months?
The Wedding Lullaby will be out in late September. That’s the second book in my new One Night to Forever series. The Christmas book will be out in October. The third book in my new series will be out in November. Still working on a title for that one.Where to buy Sweet Beginnings

Nicolle James is far from her home in the human Sectors, kidnapped by alien scientists to be the subject of horrifying experiments. She’d managed to sneak a few words of conversation with him when her captors weren’t watching but now the aliens were taking her inside the lab to begin the experiments.
Darik, a warrior of the genetically engineered Badari pack, is on a solo recon mission to check out a mysterious new lab high in the mountains. His orders are strict – do not engage. But when he has a chance meeting with the woman who might be his mate, he vows not to abandon her, orders or no orders.
Can he get inside an underground lab, find Nicolle and rescue her without getting captured himself? And when he learns the lab’s deadly secrets, can he get word to his pack about the new dangers?
Because the ruthless alien scientist running the experiments wants to get her hands on him too and will stop at nothing to achieve her goals.
This is the fourth book in a new scifi romance series and each novel has a satisfying Happy for Now ending for the hero and heroine, not a cliffhanger. For Sci Fi or Paranormal Heroes:
It’s late, he’s bored. What does he do?
Badari love card games so he probably plays some very complicated form of solitaire. Or makes sure his weapons are ready. Or he might run through some exercises.
What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?
Like all Badari, Darik is part predator so he enjoys meat, cooked on the rare side. He’ll also eat fish, fruits (Badari love tangy berries) and bread.
Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.
Darik and his packmates were trained as super soldiers so he generally likes to wear camouflage utility pants with useful pockets, a T shirt and an overshirt, plus boots.
Does he know how to fix things?
Each Badari warrior has his own specialties. Darik is more about mission planning than fixing tech and he can also pilot atmospheric craft like shuttles.
He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.
In the book he tries to rescue Nicolle and that goes badly the first time, not for lack of planning on his part, but because of an unforeseen action the enemy took. Darik never gives up though – he’s always thinking ahead to the next move and looking for any possibility to set things right. He’s stubborn and optimistic.
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
Children are one of the most important things in the world to the Badari so he’s a natural with kids, like a friendly big brother. He likes to show them how to do things. Darik is very action oriented.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
He loves the morning – a fresh new day, new opportunities, chances for good things to happen…
How does he act around people who don’t know what he is?
He’s pretty unself conscious, because he knows he’s a tough guy, able to take care of himself and others if needed. The fact that he’s been genetically engineered like all his packmates is nobody’s business. The fact he’s a highly trained soldier and general badass should be enough.
Will he let a worker handle things or do it himself?
Badari are used to doing for themselves, having been prisoners in the alien labs for generations. He’ll let someone else handle a situation if they’re more well trained for it than he is. Someone else flew him to the site of his current mission, for example. He admits he doesn’t have the skills to hack computers so he doesn’t mind his Artificial Intelligence companion handling those tasks.
Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?
Darik, like all Badari, bears scars from mistreatment by the alien scientists, as well as from combat. No other marks or personal adornment, although now that his pack has met humans, that could change. Mated Badari do have a mark on the back of their shoulders signifying that state but the marking occurs as part of claiming and being claimed by their true mate. Badari believe the mark is a gift from their goddess, signifying the lifelong bond.
Personal vehicle or public transport?
No one on the planet has a personal vehicle and there’s no public transport either. Darik will either fly himself on a mission or if a pilot has been assigned by the Alpha, he’ll take the passenger role.
Recycle or toss?
Darik and the other Badari were engineered using animal DNA as part of their makeup, so they feel very close to nature and are all about preserving their planet. So he and the others definitely recycle where possible.Thanks for helping us get to know your hero!

Why did you write this book?
All the news stories about Russia’s alleged interference in America’s presidential elections brought me back to a time in the not so distant past, when other countries fought hard for freedom, trying to break out from under the iron fist of communism. My relatives—who lived in Eastern Europe—were among them. That lead to a whole lot of speculation about how a newly free nation might be compromised and forced to surrender that freedom. The President’s Wife was the result.
What is your favorite genre to read?
I love crime thrillers, like the J.D. Robb series, but I am also partial to erotic romance. In fact, I got through law school by reading steamy romance!
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
Lt. Eve Dallas from J.D. Robb’s books. (Nora Roberts is J.D. Robb.) That woman is fierce, a true avenging angel, someone who fights for truth, justice, and the American way–in the future.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am about to begin working on a book about four former law school classmates who get dumped by their husbands, but band together to fight back, as well as a book tentatively titled That Thing Called Love, which is a guide to love in the 21st Century. It includes all the advice I have given to my millennial son and his friends. Then it’s back to the sixth book in the Kinky Briefs series.

Argen Trematu was home on leave at Farseek Brigade when the Sargan’s attacked his home world. With Farseek in ruins, Argen was captured and sold into slavery. Lieutenant Commander Trematu didn’t make such a good slave and landed him on the Julconi prison planet fighting in the pit. He thinks his life is over until he learns the Farseek Mercenaries were on the way to the rescue. Argen never thought landing on the prison world would be his lucky break.
Then me meets her on the rescue ship.
Zoey Addison was kidnapped from Earth and rescued by the Farseek Mercenaries. She joined the Mercenaries with her three friends because she had nowhere else to go. Her friends all found their soul mates among the crew and Zoey was feeling left out.
Until, dressed in rags and so dirty she could barely discern what color he was, Argen walks up to her table and takes her hand. The attraction between them all most crackles.
Why did you write this book?
This book is the culmination of the Farseek Mercenary Series: Commander’s Mate, Lieutenant’s Mate, Sahvin’s Mate, and Argen’s Mate. Then as a sampler of the series I added Faigon’s Mate as a freebie. I needed another series to keep readers interested after the Narovian Mates series. I wanted to create a little different twist on alien abduction romance and I started with the opening lines of Commander’s Mate.
What is your favorite genre to read?
Science fiction romance space opera.
Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
It’s usually the hero of the book I am reading at any given time. I really have a soft spot for cyborg heroes.
What are you working on at the moment?
A mail order bride romance with a cyborg. It’s the second entry in my Narovian Interstellar Matchmaker series.

Clarissa Lake grew up watching Star Trek and reading Marvel Comics. She attended science fiction and fantasy conventions where she met many well-known science fiction authors and attended their readings and discussion panels. They included scifi greats Anne McCaffery, CJ Cherry, George RR Martin, Ben Bova, Timothy Zahn, Frederik Pohl, Orson Scot Card. While she loves scifi, she always thought there should be more romance so she started writing it hot and steamy.
