Know the Heroine from An Awareness of Evil in Mystic Desire by Dee S Knight @DeeSKnight #RLFblog #anthology #psychic #PNRDee S Knight, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We’re excited to find out more about your heroine, but first, tell us about the book.

An Awareness of Evil in Mystic Desire by Dee S Knight

    Genre: Paranormal Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Mystic Desire, is a collection of short paranormal romance stories. I have always been a big fan of short stories, both reading and writing them. For the reader it is a chance to read the work of a diverse group of authors. I have discovered some great writers from reading short stories. From the author’s prospective, it gives us a chance to experiment on something new, a different style, or something a bit more daring.

The themes are varied from native American Dream Catchers, to lustful, vampires. And from hot warlocks to a zombie apocalypse. There is something in this anthology for everyone, from soft and tender love, to hot passionate, kinky sex.

An Awareness of Evil – Dee S Knight

Only two things stand between evil and a small girl: the visions of Amanda McMasters and Detective Brendan Gilchrist. Neither can afford to be wrong.

Know the Heroine from An Awareness of Evil in Mystic Desire

Here are some fun questions to help us know your heroine.

It’s late, she’s bored. What does she do?

Professionally, Amanda is a fabric artist. She’s always tinkering with ideas and concepts that she can turn into stunning artistic pieces. But when she needs a break, she goes antiquing, tries a new recipe, gardens, or reads. Her commissions keep her pretty busy, however.

What kind of food would she impulse buy if hungry?

A Baby Ruth candy bar. She hates seeing them on store endcaps because she’s always tempted to buy!

Describe the kind of clothes she prefers to wear.

She’s one of those people who can throw on an old scarf and look stylish, so she looks good in most anything. When going out, she likes to wear skirts and colorful tops, with pumps. Yes, she’s old-fashioned that way. At home, comfort is paramount. She’s in tees or a long-sleeved knit shirt (Idaho gets cold!), sweatpants, comfy jeans, or cargo pants so she has plenty of places to stash all the things she likes to have handy.

Does she know how to fix things?

Yes. She’s been on her own since leaving school and has found that YouTube can help you fix almost anything. No clogged pipe is getting the best of Amanda McMasters!

She tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.

This is an example of no good deed going unpunished–she tried to do the right thing and it went wrong. She used her psychic capability to save a child. When word got out, she was deluged with calls and visits from people clamoring for her help. She didn’t know how to handle it. Panicking and overwhelmed, she packed up and moved. Not a very good response.

Know the Heroine from An Awareness of Evil in Mystic Desire by Dee S Knight @DeeSKnight #RLFblog #psychic #PNRHow does she act around children she doesn’t know?

She doesn’t “take” to children she doesn’t know, although she doesn’t dislike children in general. Children in need seem to have an affinity for her. This is the second child in danger who has reached out psychically for her help.

What is she like first thing in the morning?

Amanda is one of those dreaded “Oh look! It’s another beautiful day!” people. She likes her coffee first thing, but she’s perky even without it.

    Can she use chopsticks?

No. Never seen a need for them.

Does she drink coffee? If so, how does she take it? If not, what does she drink instead?

Yes, and she drinks it black and strong.

What apps would she have on her phone?

She lives in a university town and would have an app for events at the school. Also, for several upscale fabric vendors she uses. Lastly, apps for galleries that feature her work.

    Android or iPhone?

    iPhone

    Earrings or unpierced ears?

Pierced ears. While in school she once thought about getting her tongue pierced but backed out.

    Tattoos or unadorned skin?

    Unadorned skin.

    Personal vehicle or public transport?

She has a truck but she’s close enough to downtown to walk, which she does frequently.

    Recycle or toss?

Tossing is easier. Her town has made so many rules for recycling that she has to force herself to keep up and separate her trash. But she does because deep down she thinks it’s the right thing to do.

Thanks for helping us get to know your heroine!

Meet Aaron Wolfsbane from The Sweetest Magic of All by Alice Renaud @alicerauthor #RLFblog #paranormalromanceWelcome Aaron Wolfsbane from The Sweetest Magic of All, a new paranormal romance short story from the Mystic Desire BVS anthology.

    Aaron Wolfsbane

    Age: 28

    Gender: Male

Birthplace: Uxbridge, Greater London, United Kingdom

    Profession: Teacher

    Ethnicity: White

    Species (for scifi/fantasy characters): Human

Please provide a physical description of the character.
Tall, fit, with tousled black hair. His eyes are as green and limpid as the water in a woodland brook. A tanned, handsome face, with a straight nose and strong jaw.

Please tell us a little about your character.
Aaron is a time-travelling warlock who has just come back from the 17th century. He has come to Wales to find out if there are still sea witches left, and if their old magic still works.

Who is the significant other in your character’s life?
He meets the love of his life, Sapphire, in the story. Sapphire is the last in a long line of sea witches… but she’s only an apprentice sorceress, and she’s having trouble with her spells.

    How does your hero dress?

Aaron moves between the 17th and the 21st century. When in the 17th century, he dresses like a gentleman of the time: black doublet and breeches, riding boots, and in winter, a cloak. In the 21st century he wears clothes suitable for a teacher, as that’s his day job: smart-casual shirts and trousers, or jeans and T-shirts when not working. Like all warlocks, he favours black.

How educated is this character? Is he book smart, self-taught, widely-experienced?

Aaron teaches English literature. He is very well read and very knowledgeable about Shakespeare – which isn’t surprising, as he knows the man and drinks with him regularly.

What special skills does your character rely on?

His magical skills, which include light healing, finding lost objects, and time travel. His specialty however is seeing what is in men’s – and women’s – hearts. He can see into your very soul.

What is your character’s family like?

Aaron is the son of a medieval witch, Alys Wolfsbane, also known as Alys the Dark, who ran away from her abusive husband and escaped into the 21st century. Unfortunately she had to leave her baby son behind – Auric, Aaron’s elder brother. In the 21st century, Alys met Aaron’s father, and gave birth to Aaron. They were happy for a while, until one day she disappeared. She reappeared the following evening. She looked ten years older, and she had a little boy with her – Ariel, Aaron’s younger brother. It turned out that she had been abducted by the Faeries, and spent years in Faerieland. Ariel is half-Fae. So Aaron has a rather unusual family!

If someone from your character’s past showed up, who would he most want it to be, and why? OR who would he most NOT want it to be, and why?

He would like to see his mother again. After her mysterious disappearance and return, she and Aaron’s father tried to rekindle their relationship, but Aaron’s father couldn’t get over the fact that she was 10 years older and had had a son by another man. Eventually she went away for good, taking Aaron’s brother, Ariel, with her. Ariel returned years later, but she didn’t. Ariel told Aaron that she had gone back to Faerieland, for good. Aaron still loves his mum, but is angry with her for abandoning him. They have unresolved issues!

What is your hero’s biggest hopes and dreams?

To settle down, with someone who will love him as he is, and never leave him.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

To honor the person who chose to share your story, please answer at least four of these questions. Questions with more than one point should be considered one question. You may answer as many more as you like.

Why do you think your writer chose to write about you?

I’m a time-travelling warlock, and I have an unusual family background, so I guess I have an interesting story to tell.

Why do you think your writer loves to write?

I think she loves to spend time with us, away from her work and family duties. We help her to relax and forget her worries.

What other character from your book do you think your writer should write a book about? Care to tell us why?

I think she should write books about my brothers, Auric and Ariel. They’re very interesting guys. Auric is a medieval monk who uses his magical skills to fight demons. Ariel, with his Fae blood, is the most powerful warlock in England, and all the women fall under his spell.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your writer?

    Don’t give up. Keep writing.

    Alice Renaud Social Media

Alice was born and brought up in Brittany, Western France, her father was French and her mother British (from Wales). She moved to London, UK, in 1997, where she now lives with her husband and son. She works full time as a compliance specialist in a pharmaceutical company. She has been writing in her free time since she was 14. She got quite a few short stories published in UK magazines, before moving to longer fiction. She wrote three contemporary romance books, but didn’t find a publisher for them. She then realized that mermen, sea witches, and time travelling warlocks were a lot more fun than sheikhs and billionaires! Her first two paranormal romances did not find a publisher either, then she wrote A Merman’s Choice, which was published in January this year by Black Velvet Seductions. It is the first book in the Sea of Love series, a fantasy romance trilogy inspired by the landscapes and legends of Brittany and Wales. The second book in the series, Music for a Merman, will be out later this year. She loves reading and writing stories, and sharing them with anyone who’s interested!

Help a Teen Cope #Depression by author of Becker Circle, Addison Brae @addisonbrae1 #RLFblog #romanticsuspenseAddison Brae, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your latest endeavor, and also share info on your book.

You Can Help a Teen Cope

Many teenage girls today are depressed and lonely. Pew Research Center reported in a 2019 survey that 36% of girls report being extremely anxious every day. These girls are worried about melting polar ice, school shootings, and their ability to afford college.

Studies show while these girls are more likely to be close to their families, they spend less time with friends their age and lack independence capabilities and skills because they skip things like school extra-curricular activities, driving, jobs, and dating.

The result? These girls are likely to spend Saturday night at home watching Netflix and following social media rather than at school events or socializing with friends.

How will girls maneuver college, relationships, careers and the tough choices, rejection, and mistakes we all face in life?

This problem is real and growing. Another study by the American College Health Association in 2018 found more than 85% of college students described feeling “overwhelmed,” and one-third of college students received treatment from campus counseling centers.

I have a theory. We as readers, authors, relatives, and friends can help young adults be better equipped with the skills and confidence to help them cope in two ways.

First, if you have a teen in your life, listen when they want to talk about a problem rather than fixing it for them. Let them watch you face and solve a tough issue. People emulate behavior they observe.

Second, encourage them to read books with strong heroines who are not loners. These fictional young adults tackle problems, make mistakes, and end up victorious and stronger. This is a topic I’m madly passionate about, and readers will always find a strong but flawed heroine in my books.

A group of authors and Romance Writers of America members shared an amazing list of middle grade and young adult book suggestions with strong heroines that meet these criteria. There are dozens, so this list only includes some recommendations. You can find a more extensive list on my website (https://addisonbrae.com/books-for-teens).

I challenge everyone to help equip a teen to cope in our complex world.

    Middle grade (age 8-12)

    • Rob Buyea, Because of Mr. Terupt series. Seven fifth-grade students come together to solve a problem that seems insurmountable, and their lives are changed by one amazing teacher.
    • Roshani Chokshi’s, Aru Shah and the End of Time. Twelve-year-old Aru Shah teams up with three of her classmates to stop a demon and save the world.
    • Raina Telgemeier creates graphic novels such as Guts, Sisters, Drama, and Ghosts that deal with family, peer pressure and other issues kids deal with.
    • Diane Duane, Young Wizards series, a 10-book series starting with So You Want to Be a Wizard. This sounds like a Harry Potter spin-off, but it predates that series by about a decade. The characters begin as preteens and grow into their teen years as the series progresses.
    • Madaleine L’Engle, A Wrinkle in Time. A classic coming of age fantasy that inspired a modern movie and impacted many of us when we read it as young teens.

    Young adult (age 13-18)

    • Maureen Goo, The Way You Make Me Feel. A funny story of love, new friendships, and one unique food truck after Clara took a joke too far.
    • Guadalupe Garcia McCall, Summer of the Mariposas/El Verano de las Mariposas. A Mexican-American retelling of the Odyssey about four sisters working together and learning something about family in the process.
    • Julie Murphy, Dumplin. A story about the fearless, funny, and unforgettable heroine who takes on her small town’s beauty pageant.
    • Tamora Pierce, any of her titles, especially Song of the Lioness books, Protector of the Small series, and Circle of Magic books. Pierce features teen girls as knights, wizards, and heroes.
    • Isabel Sterling, These Witches Don’t Burn. A story featuring a lesbian heroine with the power to control fire, earth, water, and air, her hot ex, and her new bi-crush.

Her worst nightmare is suffering under a cruel husband like the hateful jeweler, Henry Goldsmith, who has threatened to curb her lively spirits.

Audrey joins a pilgrimage to Glastonbury to pray for guidance. The holy relics give her no inspiration nor do her fellow travelers. Yes. I have published science fiction and fantasy adventures and romances. Dame Audrey is the first historical romance I have written.

How do you come up with ideas?…

Sometimes, I find them in my dreams. Once I have an idea of a scene with the two main characters, I let them loose to interact.

What is the single most important part of writing for you?…

I enjoy the ability to create vivid characters and fantastic new worlds.

When did you write your first book?…

More than thirty years ago, I wrote an entire science fiction romance novel. I finally typed the handwritten story into a digital file and published The Lady is Blue in 2014.

He decides to help her with her outlandish plan, but neither of them expects that the physical connection between them will lead to so much more.

How long have you been writing?

My first book was published October 27, 2004. Hard to believe it’s been almost 15 years. The industry, and my writing, has changed so much in that time.

What was your first published book?

My very first published book was Annabelle Lee with Ellora’s Cave. That was back when ebooks weren’t considered “real” books by the New York publishing houses and long before Amazon became a powerhouse in the industry. Amazing how much the world has changed since then.

I was so excited when they accepted my book. They wanted me to add about 10K to the story. I told them it was no problem. Then I panicked and went to work. It changed my life.

The book went out of publication for a couple of years after the publisher closed, but it has been released as Uncovering Annabelle.

Tell us about your writing space or home office.

I’ve written all but two of my books in a small 3′ by 6′ corner of my living room. I have a small desk, a desktop computer, and a small shelf. That’s my writing cave. The computer isn’t online. When I sit there, all I do is write.

What do you love most about that area?Do It Write: Where NJ Walters writes @njwaltersauthor #RLFblog #SciFiRomance

Oddly enough, I love how small it is. I like being cozy. I like that everything is close at hand. There’s wall on two sides of the space and a privacy screen around the front and part of other side. It really is a writing cave.

If money was no object, what would your home office look like?

Honestly, if money was no option I’d own a house, maybe something 800 to 1000 square feet. (Which is much bigger than my current apartment.) I’d love a small office with floor to ceiling bookshelves on at least two of the walls for my books and personal mementos. I’d have my desk beside a window overlooking a yard. I’d also have a cozy reading area in front of the shelves where I could relax or work on research and notes.

What office equipment do you use most, other than your computer?

I’m a bit of a technophobe, so I’m not big on electronics. Other than my desktop computer, I’d say I use my iPad mini the most. I use it mostly in the evenings when I’m curled up on the sofa for checking email or social media. I’ll even watch TV shows and YouTube videos on it.

What book or books about writing do you recommend for new authors?

There are so many great books on writing. Some are purely technical while others are more inspirational. I’d tell any new author to check out what’s in their local library and local bookstore to get a feel for what’s out there. Stephen King’s On Writing and Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird are both go-to books for most writers and a great starting point.

What do you like to read for relaxation?

I love to read romance, of course–historical, contemporary, romantic suspense, and paranormal. I also love to read nonfiction books. A lot of self help, personal growth types of books. I figure it’s good to balance things out.
