Turning fifty in her childhood bedroom wasn’t on her bucket list…

Kate Tessler is convinced her sister is trying to kill her. In fact, she might prefer death to Jen’s “50 for 50 Challenge,” where Kate will try fifty new things throughout the year she turns fifty. Still adjusting to her new underemployed life back in her childhood home in Phoenix, the last thing Kate wants is to prepare for paddle boarding, especially when she receives an anonymous message claiming that Mayor Todd Paradise is taking bribes. The author claims to have proof, including photos, and challenges Kate to publish the story.

Could good guy Todd, Kate’s almost boyfriend, really be corrupt or is someone trying to set him up? Kate sets out to discover the truth, with help from her multi-generational, unconventional, and often unhelpful crew. She thrived reporting from war zones as an international war correspondent, but can she survive a deadly fundraising party, a close encounter with a taser, a turn at an open mic night, and a hundred-pound dog named Whiskers?

Why did you write this book?

As I faced fifty, I wanted to create a mystery lead dealing with some of the same issues: aging parents, concerns about financing retirement, and a body that doesn’t recover like it once did.

What attracts you to this book’s genre?

Mysteries usually have an active plot, with lots going on. Humorous mysteries add quirky characters and fun dialog. Cozy mysteries or cozy-adjacent, like mine, also have a happy ending. You know you’ll get a good time and finish in a positive mood.

Is there an issue that you’re addressing with your book?

I didn’t specifically set out to educate or influence readers, but the Accidental Detective series does explore issues related to aging. Kate is dealing with the things a lot of us face in midlife: aging parents with health or memory problems, concerns about financing retirement someday, menopause, and a body that doesn’t recover like it once did. She has to figure out how to live with the new limitations from an injury that requires her to walk with a cane.

Kate’s father and his friends are also major characters. They are in their seventies and eighties and are active, intelligent, and a positive force in society. At the same time, the stories explore challenges older people face, such as loneliness, being treated as incapable, and the potential for abuse by family members. Maybe readers will think twice before making assumptions about older folks they see.

What’s a fun fact about your books?

I started in children’s literature. My first published book was a middle grade novel (for ages 9-12) called The Well of Sacrifice – historical drama set in ninth-century Mayan Guatemala. It still in print and used in schools when they teach the Maya.

I also have a short series about kids who travel with a ghost hunter TV show. My other 100+ books for kids are educational work for hire, both nonfiction and fiction I’ve been a ghostwriter for some popular children’s mystery series starring your favorite young detectives. I write for kids as Chris Eboch and MM Eboch.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m working on the fourth book in an upcoming series about cowboy billionaires – specifically, a ranch family that finds out winning the lottery causes as many problems as it solves.

I’m also writing a series with my brother, scriptwriter Douglas J Eboch, who wrote the original screenplay for the movie Sweet Home Alabama. These are prequel novels set when the movie characters are teenagers. We follow the crazy antics of Melanie, Jake, and their friends a decade before the events of the movie. We just released book 3, Felony Melanie and the Prank War. Sign up for our romantic comedy newsletter to get a free short story or find book 1 at Amazon US, or B&N, or other E-book retailers.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

In the Accidental Detective series, Someone Missing from Malapais Mountain comes out in February of 2023, with two more to follow. The Billionaire Cowboy’s Christmas comes out November 8, with four more books next year.

Read Goldberg Variations by Lisabet Sarai @LisabetSarai #RLFblog #RomanceA gorgeous and exquisitely talented cellist becomes the apex of a love triangle in Lisabet Sarai’s polyamorous romance Goldberg Variations. Al and Harv Goldberg each fall for the newest member of the respected Goldberg Trio, unaware that they’re both targets for her affections.

Lisabet, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Goldberg Variations.

    Goldberg Variations by Lisabet Sarai

    Genre Erotic romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

All great music is born of passion

    A violinist, a violist and a seductress.

For twenty-two years the Goldberg brothers – Richard on cello, Harvey on viola and Albert on violin – have made music together, earning a decent living and a modicum of respect in the classical music community. When Richard’s sudden demise forces Harvey and Al to find a replacement cellist, neither can imagine how their new colleague will shake up their middle-aged lives.

Deidre Rasinovsky-Corbatta is an unlikely addition to the Goldberg Trio, a shapely siren with purple hair, scarlet lips and a rose tattooed on her ample breasts – but she plays cello like an angel. The passion she pours into her music spills over into her relationships with the two brothers. When both Al and Harv fall in love with her, will this tear the trio apart – or transform it?

    QUICK

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?

Actually, there are only a few romance genres that I have not written. My back list includes contemporary, historical, paranormal, steam punk, science fiction. LGBTQ, power exchange, ménage, multicultural – pretty much everything except Western romance and sports romance. I haven’t written any motorcycle club romance or mafia romance either, but I would not rule out the possibility that I might in the future.

My reading tastes are diverse and eclectic, and that carries over into my writing. I love experimenting with new genres. From an author branding perspective this probably isn’t the best strategy, but at least my readers are not likely to get bored.

How do you come up with ideas?

I have dozens of ideas rattling around in my head or jotted down in my notebook. Almost anything can serve as the seed for a story: personal experiences (especially travel), a stranger I catch sight of in the distance, a song. Sometimes a title will pop into my mind, and the tale with follow. Sometimes the trigger is a “what if” question or some news article.

When I was writing for a publisher (as opposed to self-publishing), I’d often respond to their calls for anthology submissions. I liked the challenge of finding a creative, distinctive approach to these calls, something beyond what the publisher might have expected.

Actually quite a few of my books had their beginnings as reactions to established genre tropes. I love taking the stereotypes and turning them upside down. I want to surprise and delight anyone who picks up one of my books. The worst thing I can imagine is for readers to consider my work predictable.

What is the single most important part of writing for you?

I love the process of writing, taking some vague inspiration and shaping it into a story. Sometimes it’s painful, trying to get the ideas out of my mind and onto the page, but at times it feels like magic. The words flow freely from my imagination to the page. The internal critic is silent. This is such an intoxicating experience – like an altered state of consciousness or waking dream. Sometimes after a writing session like that, I read the results and simply marvel, wondering where this marvelous prose came from.

The other thing I love is hearing from readers who’ve enjoyed my work. Writing is wonderful, but so is being read and appreciated.

When did you write your first book?

I’ve been writing stories and poetry all my life, but my first novel, Raw Silk, was published by Black Lace Books in 1999. That book is now in its fourth edition. To be honest, I’ve kind of lost track of how many novels, novellas and short stories I’ve released since then. In such a long career, books go in and out of “print”, stories get revised and republished – what’s important to me is that I continue to create new work.

    FUN

Leather or lace? Considering the climate where I live (in the tropics), it’s got to be lace
Black or red? Red, without a doubt. Crimson, scarlet, vermilion…
Satin sheets or smooth cotton? Smooth cotton.
Ocean or mountains? Ocean heals my soul.
City life or country life? These days, I’m a city gal. I love the convenience.
Party life or evening at home? How about a party at home?
Dogs or cats? Cats. How can you even consider asking?

Sheena just wants to find a man to spend her treasured days off with, in the romantic suspense story Secret Lover by Fiona McGier.

The time she spends with Cory convinces her that she wants so much more with him. But in her world, having feelings is dangerous falling in love can be deadly for both of you!

Fiona, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I'm Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your series.

Secret Lover in the Female Secret Agents series.

    Genre: Romantic suspense.

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Sheena has been an international agent for the past twelve years twelve long years of constant movement, being sent all over the world to hopefully do good things in other countries. She has enjoyed most of the aspects of her exciting life, including the many men she has been able to amuse herself with during her rare time-off days in-between assignments. She has never been tempted to break the cardinal rule, which is that agents are not allowed to have emotions, which are too dangerous in their line of work. She has spent years suppressing them quite successfully.

When a famous actor walks into the safe-house bar in Berlin where she is beginning a few days of down-time, she decides that seducing him is just the thing she needs to help her ignore the strange feeling of discontent that she has been plagued with lately. Tall and bronzed, the Native American actor has long black hair and a commanding air that interests everyone else in the bar as well. But to her delight, his eyes are only on Sheena. They spend days in her borrowed apartment, discovering the joys to be had in sharing their bodies with each other. Slowly, Sheena is forced to realize that she is developing feelings. Finding out that Cory is already in love with her adds another layer of danger. She will have to leave him when she is given her next assignment. That has never been a problem for her before. Will she be able to forget him once she leaves him? Will he ever forgive her? Since she is not ever supposed to see the same man twice, will it matter?

Which book is this in the series?

This is the first book in the Female Secret Agents series.

How many books do you plan for the series?

There are two books out now. I have some ideas for more, but other WIPs are taking up my time now.

    How many books are completed?

    Two.

What characters are the main stars in your series?

Sheena has been an agent for the past 12 years. Of course this isn't her real name. Cory is the famous action movie star she falls in love with. Even he doesn't learn her real name until half-way through the first book. Both of them are an intergral part in the last section of the second book, Undercover Lovers, when agent-handler Malcolm, who used to work with Sheena, recommends her skills to another female agent, Ameena, whose agent husband has been outed and thrown into prison in the Middle East.

What is the overall theme in this series?

I've always loved spy stories mostly movies and TV shows. But I'm always chagrinned that the females are eye candy, or rewards or they get killed right after the hero beds them. I want to BE the agent with the mad skills! So I wrote what I want to see. I guess the theme is "Anything you can do, I can do better." LOL.

Please list the series titles below, in any order you prefer.

    Secret Lover

    Undercover Lovers

What did you like best about writing this series?

I had a lot of fun writing about kick-ass females and the men who fall in love with them. It's not the life I lead, nor will it ever be. But I really enjoyed imagining myself as one of them!

What other books (not in this series, have you written?)

My Minnesota Romances also have spies in them:
For the Love of his Life
    Only One Man Will Do
    Her Last Resort
    No More Secrets
I also have a series of two werewolf books set at a private academy in Maine:
    When a Wolf Howls
    Worth the Wait
    3 stand-alone books:
Prophecy of the Mayan Undead (paranormal)
    Two For Tuesday (contemporary)
    The Right Choice (contemporary)
And a series about the romances of the members of a large Hispanic family, The Reyes Family Romances
Never Too Old for the Game of Love
    Recipe for Love
    Love By Design
Prescription for Love (a perma-free book)
    Analysis of Love
    Love Therapy

Tuesday Trash and Trouble: Book #3 in the Friday Night Mystery Club Series by Joanna Campbell Slan

    Genre: Cozy mystery

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG

The year is 1986, the place is…pitiful. It’s Decatur, Illinois, known for high unemployment, striking unions, the pervasive stink of soybean processing, and seven railroad crossings at one intersection. A wrong turn along life’s marital highway has left Catherine “Cragan” Collins stuck in Decatur. With a mountain of post-divorce bills to pay, Cragan takes a job selling high-priced newspaper advertising. If she’s lucky, her commissions will cover the cost of her grandmother’s stay in a nearby retirement home.

After the divorce, Cragan swears off men, but she’s a sucker for a guy in a nice suit. She falls hard for a man who publicly snubs her. On the rebound, she accepts an invitation from Ross Gentry, a quiet hunk who favors pearl snaps and cowboy boots. Cragan reasons that her heart is safe, because she and Ross come from two different worlds. But one night in his arms might be enough to prove her wrong. Without warning, everything blows up in Cragan’s face. Her boss threatens to take away her accounts, a friend’s little sister is kidnapped, and an overnight guest is shot. What makes you different from other people?

I am weird. I love anything creative, and I am totally crafty. Last week, a friend returning from Ethiopia brought me a bag of coffee inside a fabric sack. The coffee is nice, but I’m over-the-moon about the sack, as it is a woven material that’s unique. I’ve turned it into a dress for a doll I made. Today, someone sent us a gift from Harry & David. I don’t care about the fruit, but I’m wild about the gold foil that a pear was wrapped in. I can’t wait to use it in a craft!

    What is your personality type?

My astrology sign is Cancer, and my Myers Briggs personality is INFJ, which is the rarest type. Put that together and you get someone who would rather be alone than socialize, who wants to inspire, who is quiet and and idealistic. That’s me to a “T.”

What was your favorite childhood game?

I loved making fairy houses in the roots of a nearby maple tree. I made beds and dishes and all sorts of furniture. (Notice I was playing alone! An early indicator of the future me.)

What is your favorite subject to talk about?

Either my dog, Jax, or Steinway pianos. My husband has sold Steinway pianos for more than 40 years, and I love the romantic lore surrounding the brand. Jax is a purebred Havanese, and he’s my best friend. Everybody loves Jax! He’s always cheerful, smart, and great company.

    What is your favorite book?

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I love it so much that I wrote a series as a sequel, and the first book (Death of a Schoolgirl) won the Daphne du Maurier Award for Literary Excellence.

What made you want to be a writer?

I grew up in a chaotic home with two alcoholic parents. Early on, I learned to live in my head. Books were the only way to escape, and they offered me a roadmap for living a better life than what I was exposed to. (Yes, I ended a sentence with a preposition.)

What are your favorite books for writing advice?

William Zinsser’s Writing to Learn was a game-changer for me. Zinsser explains that writing is a method of exploring an idea. Rather than thinking you have to know everything before you sit down to write, he suggests you start and allow yourself to ask questions along the way. Writing is a process, not a product. Once you accept that, you’ll never have writer’s block. You’ll always approach a blank page with a sense of excitement and wonder.

What’s your best advice for a new writer?

Keep writing, even when you don’t feel like it. I write almost every day. (Usually I take one day off on the weekends.) The best marketing tool you’ll ever have is your next book. The best learning tool will be your next book. The more you write, the better you’ll get. (Okay, some people might NOT get better. LOL) If you listen to your critics, and study your craft, you’re bound to improve.

What are your writing goals for the next year or so?

If I keep on pace, I’ll write six books this year, just as I did last year. I think I can do the same next year. This year, I was blessed with my first grandchild, and he’s been a happy interruption and priority for me. Next year, I might tackle some of the books I’ve been contemplating that aren’t part of the various series I’m currently fleshing out.
