What is it that you want,
but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.I want what any gay man of my era would want – to be able to
live my life without continually looking over my shoulder wondering if I’ll be caught
and disgraced. The lowliest chimney sweep can walk down the road with his girl on
his arm. Is it too much to be allowed to walk down the road with my man on mine?What’s your internal limitation?
Meaning, what is it about you that makes it so you cannot do what it is you need
to do during this story?I could say it’s the damn unfairness of the law, making men such
as myself prey to blackmailers, but that’s a coward’s defence. If I’m being honest
in my answer, I can’t help usually assuming the worst, and putting a pessimistic
interpretation on things.Tell us about your significant
other, that person who makes living worthwhile.That would have to be Jonny Browne, who I first met when I was
dressed up to the nines as a soubrette. I’d better explain. I was in a WWI concert
party, helping to keep up the lads’ morale. Miss Madeleine was my stage name and
I was trussed up in more feathers, silk and lace than a high class tart. Jonny had
the sort of smile to get my bloomers in a tangle.What would that person
say about you?That I’m an infuriating idiot who wouldn’t know a good thing
if it smacked him one in the gob. He’d also (I hope) say I’m handsome, witty and
have a stunning pair of legs. And that my skills in bed were worth the wait.What special skills do
you rely on?In bed or out? As I’m a gentleman I’ll refrain from commenting
on the former! I discovered a lot about myself during the war, not least that I
could sing and dance well enough to deceive plenty of people into thinking (at least
for a while) that they were watching a girl. I also found unexpected depths of courage.
They tell me I fought like a lion, but all I can remember was being bloody scared
and having to do my duty despite it.Are you happy with the
way your story ended? Why or why not?Of course I am. Happy ever after might be a pipe dream for a
man like me in the era I live in, but Happy for now is more than many of us could
have expected during the war.About You: Questions for the writer.
You have the length of

do.If you want nice young men, quirky humour, unusual settings and
ideas, I’m your girl! I can’t deny having written about gay weresloths…Why did you choose to
write about this character?I read a fascinating book about the songs of WWI, and was amazed
to discover how popular concert parties had been back then, out in France.
When I found out that some of them contained extremely convincing female impersonators
(at least one of whom got kidnapped by another regiment who wanted ‘her’ for their
own) I had to write a story set against that background.Was there anything you
discovered about this character that was a surprise to you?My characters continually surprise me. To the extent that I often
end up re-writing whole sections of stories to make them accord with what I’ve found
out. That may sound like hard work, but I think it gives the storyline authenticity,
rather than shoe-horning a character into a pre-arranged plot. Not that I ever have
a pre-arranged plot.As for Samuel, I knew he was a courageous fighter, so the extent
of his doubts and fears in peacetime surprised me.When you wrote about this
character, what made you the most happy? What made you the most sad?The era itself makes me very sad. Such a waste of life in that
conflict. So many young men cut down in their prime, including heroes of mine like
Wilfred Owen and Ronnie Poulton-Palmer. But I have to keep coming back to it and
exploring the notion of men at war. Awfully Glad is my fourth story set in or around
WWI.Are any sequels planned
for this book?I don’t think so. I have a long running series – the Cambridge
Fellows mysteries – and if I have a contemporary cosy mystery with gay romantic
elements which has been submitted to a publisher and that might become a series.

you the most difficulty?“My fear of dying, and my need to rely on, Letch, for help.
He is less than trustworthy. I know that he is only in this for the money and doesn’t
believe in love. I hope I can trust him.”What’s your external complication?
In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.“The Diablos are treacherous monsters. I’ve witnessed the
havoc that they can wreak on a poor soul. And then there’s the crevice. The impassable
crevice, the thorn between myself and Priscilla, I must figure out how to get across

other, that person who makes living worthwhile.“Priscilla is as beautiful as the rising Sun. She is smart
and loyal. We were so happy before we were separated.”What would that person

and kiss the top of my nose.What is your family like?“When the Earth fell, I had no family other than Priscilla.
Then I met, Junkyard. He’s my dog and the closest thing to a brother I’ve ever known.”What special skills do
you rely on?“I rely on my engineering skills to keep alive. Junkyard
has a special talent for locating things that we need. Letch provides an extra set

meeting. I don’t even know his name. The black swan idea has been with me since
I went to Australia on holiday
and saw them, flocks of them swimming in the edge of the ocean in a place near Melbourne. There was also a
tame one that lived on the pond where I was renting a holiday house in Perth.The man who inspired Dhruv, my alpha male in ‘A Little Mysterious’
came into the antique shop where I work. He was gorgeous, so polite, and cool, that
I went to the window so I could secretly watch him walk away down the street.A Little MysteriousHe’d been sent off course…he thought he was lost…until he found
Daisy.His vampire abilities were special. He belonged to an elite group.

Daisy, would you like
to tell the readers about how you and Dhruv met?Daisy: We met on the high street in the café I worked in didn’t
we Dhruv?Dhruv: We did formally meet then, although I took a while to
sat much to Daisy. I liked her as soon as I saw her. That was before we actually
met. I’d seen her around shall we say. I don’t want to give spoilers.Daisy: That’s true, but I wanted you right away. I could hardly
take my eyes off you. When I went up the back of the café and cleared the tables,
I used to stare at you.Dhruv: You did more than stare you sighed over me. I knew it.
I could sense it. I could feel your need and it fuelled mine.He leans across and kisses Daisy, then keeps hold of her hand.Dhruv, Can you describe
when you first knew you were in love with Daisy?Dhruv: You know, I’m sorry but I can’t. It was weird for me.
I couldn’t admit it to myself. I think Daisy loved me right away. Did you Daisy?Daisy: I knew I wanted to make love with you, but I felt such
a strong attraction to you I think I might have loved you right away. Then I knew
the first time we made love, it was sex that turned into making love. For me anyway.
Although I liked him the moment I saw him, in the cafe doorway. I wanted those arms

him this time .I better ask another question since now they are starting to get
a little heated.What’s one thing you might
have changed about your story?Daisy: Nothing, since it’s the real story. Although I’ve never
been happy with my name, and that I’m not very tall, Dhruv can tuck me under his
arm. Although things are a little different now since we really got together, but
I can’t tell you that. It would be a spoiler.Dhruv: That’s so sexy Daisy, that I can pick you up and cuddle
you into my body. You’re beautiful the way you are.As for me changing the story, more sex, although there’s loads,
I’m addicted to Daisy now and I find it hard to keep my hands off her. I might have
said a little more about our lives after we got together, but that might be better
in another book.Dhruv, tell us something
about Daisy, how would you describe her in a few words?Dhruv: She’s very pretty, slender, intelligent. I think she’s
kind and generous, and she treats people really well. She’s brave too. She likes
the countryside and water. Starts to laugh and hugs Daisy.Daisy, describe Dhruv
in a few words.Very sexy, giving, clever, thoughtful, a great lover, knows what
he wants or needs to do and goes for it. He’s very creative, and talented artistically.So what’s hot about the

St. ClaireTell us about yourself.There’s really not much to tell. I’m focused on school right
now. I have one more semester until I complete my Masters on Meteorology. After
that, I’ll probably take a position forecasting for agriculture or maybe
something research-based. I guess I’m a little boring, just a regular girl.Tell us about Cole.Ha. I guess you’d say he’s the opposite of regular. Cole is
kind of gifted. He’s handsome and charming. You know how some people are just
really good with other people, like they make friends and keep the peace
without even trying? That’s Cole. I’m not saying he doesn’t work hard. He does.
He grew up on a farm, so he’s never not worked, but he has this way about him
that makes things look easy when they’re not. He’s also insufferably honorable,
so even when your mad at him you can’t help but love him. Yeah. That sucks.What was it like where you
grew up?Barrett. Ugh. Barrett,
Vermont has two traffic lights.
That’s actually a big deal. We got the second one when I was fifteen and it was
the biggest news all year. So, yeah, Barrett is a really small town. And of
course there are some things about growing up in a small town that are nice.
It’s safe, like leave your keys on your car seat safe, and pretty. Even having
grown up there I can’t deny that Barrett is an especially lovely place. But
it’s also a tiny dot on the map filled with people who spend way too much time
gossiping. There’s no movie theater much less anything more culturally
satisfying and our library is literally a single room off the side of the Moose
Lodge. A few years back the librarian retired and now people just check out and
return books on their own. Seriously.If you were given your
fondest wish, what would it be?Wow. Well, if you can keep a secret, I’ll admit that it used
to be Cole. I loved him.I mean really loved him. I suppose when you’re young
it’s usually just a crush, but when it’s your best friend–the person you know
best in the world– that’s a little different. That’s real. Of course Cole was
clueless. He was way too busy being the most popular guy in school to notice.
Which is good. I mean, he clearly doesn’t think of me that way. He loves me and
all, I know he does, but it’s like I’m his kid sister or something. I sometimes
doubt he even remembers that I’m a girl at all. So I’m glad he never figured it
out. A broken heart hurts plenty without a walloping dose of humiliation as a
side dish.Describe a place of perfect
refuge.A library. A real one, not Barrett’s tiny space, but a giant
multi-floored building filled with dark wooden bookshelves and big comfy
chairs. The kind of place where you can get lost and learn anything.As a child, who was your
best friend? Tell us about him/her.Cole, actually. My mom used to get some work from his
parents during the Christmas season. She’d help make wreaths or work the cash
box and I tagged along and played with Cole once we got his chores done. I
loved being on the farm with Cole, we used chase the cats around the barn and
hike around the forest pretending to go on quests.

Tell us about yourself.I am a scientist first
and foremost. Though my family might wish it different, I adore science. It’s precise,
and there are so many permutations in things that you can repeat tests and get not
only the same answer but variations on the theme, depending on the test. I love
exploring the world around me, especially that of the Gamma quadrant, which is where
I make my home. The crystals found on one particular planet of this quadrant are
special to my family and to myself as I made my name with how they work and their
practical applications in science.I take my responsibilities
very seriously, especially those of position within the ranked families of our society.
I might not always agree with how things are done, but I do believe in caring for
those without the same advantages. It does mean however, that I do find myself at
odds with those in power, including the Overseer of the Gamma quadrant.What do you think is your strongest point?I stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves. I use
my abilities and my rank to better others. Perhaps I can be a bit rash at times,
but my strength lies in the fact I use my mind and my resources efficiently, sometimes
ruthlessly to protect those who fall under my protection.What do you wish was different about your life?I miss my parents desperately. Because of what happened in the
past, I didn’t get much time with them after I was ten years old. They were whisked
off for their protection and very rarely do I get to see them. Due to that, I often
wonder what my life would’ve been like to be raised by them completely and not by

I know it’s idealistic, but if I could have that wish come true, it would be that

There is a conservatory on Hypatia, my home. When I’m there, I relax as it reminds
me of one of my favourite places on a world I can barely go visit nowadays to protect
my parents. Otherwise, my only other place of refuge is my bedroom. It’s a place
