Freedom's Path by Linda Carroll-Bradd @lcarrollbradd #RLFblog #historical #romanceLinda Carroll-Bradd, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your book.

    Freedom’s Path by Linda Carroll-Bradd

    Genre historical romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG
As a maid in the Deerbourne Inn, freedom-fighter Sidonie Demers has the perfect cover for helping escaping slaves on the Underground Railroad. The patterns in her quilts serve as messages directing them to the safest route. The cause is personal for octoroon Sidonie whose mother and grandmother escaped bondage years earlier.
Army Corporal Colin Crawford arrives in Willow Springs, disguised as a salesman, to locate abolitionist activity. Raised detesting slavery, he’s conflicted about upholding the Fugitive Slave Act but believes in laws and fulfilling his duty.
The attraction between Colin and Sidonie is irresistible, but what happens when their true identities are revealed?
What’s your favorite down-home family style meal?
I’ve always been partial to lasagna, which has become a bit of a challenge since hubby and I switched to mostly vegan cuisine.
    Describe the perfect vacation.
Traveling to a place I’ve never been before (doesn’t matter if mountains or desert) with lots of historic buildings and/or museums to visit.
Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.
I had several plastics horses and sent my Barbie and Ken dolls on adventures to foreign countries or to times in the past.
When you read for pleasure, what kind of books do you choose?
A genre I’m not writing. If my current WIP is historical, then I read contemporary and vice versa. I read a lot of mysteries, especially by Swedish and Norwegian authors–must be tied to my Scandinavian DNA.
What kinds of things do you read when you’re researching a new book?
I love reading firsthand accounts of an area, the history of the location, and the types of people who settled there. I write mostly in the latter half of the 1800s so lots of my books include characters who have lived through the emigrant experience. I have AAA tour books of many states, and often a little-known fact of an actual occurrence fits in my story timeline.

Fiction Furbaby: Meet Bas from Water Dreams by Katherine Eddinger Smits @katherinesmits @RobsRescues #RLFblog #MermanKatherine Eddinger Smits, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We support all furbabies, real life or fictional. We want to know all about your Fiction Furbaby, but first, please tell us about your book.

Water Dreams by Katherine Eddinger Smits

    Genre Paranormal Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Nik–an outwardly normal young woman terrified by water, living in the Greek-American town of Tarpon Springs, Florida.
Bas–a shapeshifter merman tasked with obtaining Nik’s help to gain what his species most desires.
The Nerei–a race of beings who want humans to continue to believe they are mythological.
What happens when Nik refuses to help Bas and the Nerei?
How will Nik and Bas save each other when they fall in love, against his species laws?

Meet Bas Cantonous from Water Dreams

    Full name: Basileus Cantonous
    Nickname: Bas
    Gender: Male
    Species: Nerei (Merman)
Physical description: Muscular, handsome, with pale skin, black eyes, black hair with jade colored highlights
Relationship to main character: Love interest
    Relationship to the villain/antagonist: Son
Where this furbaby came from: He belongs to a race of descendants of two of the Greek Titians, Oceanus and Tethys. He and his people are similar to humans but evolved to live in the water. His clan originated in the sea near Greece, but most have relocated to the Gulf of Mexico and spend time on land in Tarpon Springs, Florida. They call themselves Nerei, which comes from the Greek word for Nereids, or water nymphs.
What inspired you to create this character?
When I decided to write my debut novel, I knew I wanted it to be in my favorite genre, paranormal romance. However, I wanted something different from werewolves and vampires. I like them, but I wanted to write about a new kind of shifter. I already knew the story would be set in my home town of Tarpon Springs, Florida, so I considered what kind of shape-shifter might live near there. It’s a small town on the west coast of Florida, known for its large Greek settlement and fishing. So, of course mermaids and mermen came to mind.
What does the main character think about this furbaby?
Nik, the main character, is a young woman of Greek heritage who is terrified of water. When Bas tells her he is a merman, she thinks he is crazy. She doesn’t want anything to do with him.
What does the villain/antagonist think about this furbaby?
The antagonist in this story is Mara, the clan matriarch and Bas’ mother. She has tasked him with enlisting Nik’s help. The Nerei’s greatest desire is to obtain independence from the water, so they can remain on land as long as they want. Mara loves Bas deeply, but is critical of him and not sure he takes his job seriously.
    What does this furbaby eat?
When in the water, Nerei eat raw fish, which they catch by elongating their fingernails into claws and their teeth into razor sharp points. On land, they eat human food, though they have a preference for sushi and very rare meat.
What is this furbaby’s natural habitat?
Bas’ natural habitat is the water and the land. Because he can shapeshift to pass for human, he can keep his true nature a secret while enjoying all the land has to offer.
Please share an interesting fact or tidbit about this furbaby.
Bas was raised in a Nerei community and had little interaction with humans until he was appointed to contact Nik. His English is formal and he doesn’t use contractions. Also, he has no knowledge of popular culture so idioms and slang sometimes confuse him in amusing ways.
What triggers the shift from human to animal?
Nerei are in complete control of their shift. They can remain human in water or they can partially shift. They can also remain in Nerei form on land, but rarely do because they wouldn’t be able to walk and also because they don’t want humans to see them in their natural form.
How does the shifting process happen?
The Nerei make a mental decision to shift and the change is almost instantaneous.
How does the human character think and feel about the animal side?
The Nerei don’t consider themselves animals. They believe they are superior to humans and retain their enhanced strength, hearing and eyesight when in human form.
How does the animal character think and feel about the human side?
The Nerei still consider themselves Nerei even when in human form. There is not the dichotomy that is often found in shifters, since their brains and sense of self is the same in either form.
In what ways are the human and animal characters different in belief and needs?
The Nerei cannot remain on land more than a few hours without rejuvenating in the water. They become severely dehydrated and this process can be fatal. They can remain indefinitely in the water, but they do need to surface to breathe air occasionally. This is because they have dual respiratory systems that can be overwhelmed by prolonged immersion.
Is the shifting process part of a deeper, mystical process (i.e., moon phases, rituals, life events)?
No, but the Nerei have a complex society headed by the matriarch and clan elders, who are all female. Males are warriors, but have little political power. The clans don’t all get along and sometimes war with one another, but also make alliances that complicate everything. They are also polytheistic, worshipping the gods and goddesses of the Greek mythology.

    About Corrin Castle

Which, if any of the pets in your writing are modeled after your own pets? In what way?
My current pet is a 21 year old Irish Sport Horse, who has been with me since she was six. I don’t have any animals in Water Dreams, or my other published fiction, but my work in progress includes horses, a cat, and a dog. Those animals are modeled after ones we were privileged to share time with during their lives.
What do your pets do when you are writing?
Corrin Castle lives on a farm in Ocala, Florida. She thinks it belongs to her and must approve any additions to the herd. (Usually, the answer is no.)
What’s the most unusual pet you ever had?
When my kids were five and three, a cockatiel flew into our yard and perched on my daughter. “Mommy, can we keep him?” You know the rest. Crystal lived with us the rest of his life. He said a lot of words and loved to sit on your shoulder and rub his beak on your cheek.
Where did you find your pet?
My horse was imported from Ireland. I found her in Virginia.
What do you feed your pet?
    Grain, hay and grass.
Describe a toy or favorite item your pet loves.

Katherine Eddinger Smits has a BA in Psychology and Sociology from the University of South Florida and a Masters in Social Work from Florida State University. After over two decades of helping veterans, families and community agencies as a clinical social worker, she retired to pursue writing. She has published two paranormal romances, a third is scheduled for release March 2019, and several more are in the works.
She grew up in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Although not from a Greek background, she fell in love with the Greek culture of the town and its close-knit families. She moved away years ago, but she still visits Tarpon Springs frequently to see old friends and classmates, walk the beaches, or shop and eat at the Sponge Docks.
She started writing stories in grade school and always intended to write novels someday. However, she put off writing fiction while she raised her family and worked as a clinical social worker at four different Veterans Affairs Medical Centers around the country. Although she was devastated to learn that her first career choice—mermaid, was not realistic, Katherine found helping veterans and their families fulfilling, and managed to squeeze writing into her life. Whether it was writing clinical assessments, creating brochures for social programs, or putting together newsletters for clubs and organizations, she always had some kind of writing project in the works.
Katherine lives with her husband in Homosassa, Florida and Falling Waters, West Virginia. They have a daughter who resides in Alexandria, Virginia and a son, daughter-in-law and two

Threatened race horses, city slicker attorney, sexy California wrangler—what can possibly go wrong?
Hot-shot Chicago prosecuting attorney Traci Steele works tirelessly keeping rapists off the street to prevent other women from suffering the hell she’s endured, so she resists her friends’ insistence that she take a two month R and R in their California Live Oak condo—until they persuade her to help their rancher friend as a private investigator.
Though he runs the stables at Live Oak, well-muscled mustached wrangler Scott McCord much prefers working with the race horses he trains at his ranch, and he can’t believe his old friends have sent a greenhorn female to help him with horse troubles.

Traci is as tenacious in her sleuthing as she is terrified about her inability to ever love a man. Can Scott succeed in gentling her – like he does his horses – before she flees in panic?
Traci Steele may be the most damaged of the heroines in our four-book horse racing suspense series, Riders Up. If she was a real person, she might stand up and say “Me, too” – except she’s never told anyone, not even her best friend, Cassie.

Princess Adriana had her life all figured out…

My Way to You by Lyndell Williams

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Lawyer Simon Young is smart, confident, and adept at keeping things with women casual–until he meets his best friend Marcus’s sister, Regina. Immediately intrigued by Regina’s beauty, Simon becomes increasingly enthralled and ultimately risks his friendship to have her for himself.
Social justice writer and activist Regina Kent is usually cautious and savvy. Yet, unable to resist her attraction to the handsome Simon, she plunges into a torrid affair, knowing that she chances angering big brother and her less tolerant followers, many of whom will not accept that one of their most popular pro-Black bloggers is dating an Asian man.
As their clandestine romance evolves, Simon and Regina fall deeper in love. Making sure that things stay between them becomes progressively impossible, and neither knows how much longer they can keep Marcus in the dark and the world at bay.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing in varying capacities since I started writing for my college newsletter. Once I got bit with the writing bug, I expanded into writing for online publications as well as writing essays for a literary journal, books, and peer-reviewed articles.
This year, I had several short stories published in collections and published my first novel.
What was your first published book?
My Way to You is my first novel. It is an interracial romance about an Asian American lawyer who falls in love with an African American pro-Black blogger. They have to learn to comfort each other as each encounters levels of racial microaggressions from society. They also have to worry about her big brother finding out, who would not appreciate his best friend and little sister dating.
Tell us about your writing space or home office.
My writing space is in a corner of my bedroom in our family’s cozy cape. I bought one of those affordable big box store tables and a swivel chair to stake my claim. The table hosts my laptop (pc of course) with an attached keyboard and second monitor. My writing demand requires an ability to work from multiple screens.
I also have a wonderful lamp I got from my daughter as a gift. It has multiple settings, which is great when I’m trying to work at 4 a.m. while my husband sleeps.
    Anything special about your space?
My space is also “mommy central.” Because I try to get writing done during a day packed with mothering 6 kids and homeschooling as well as communicating with colleagues and students, I have a bunch of non-writing supplies, such as combs and brushes to do my little one’s hair and moisturizing butter to keep everyone’s skin smooth.
What do you love most about that area?
It’s where the magic happens. There is something about being there that helps trigger my creativity. I can get work done in other places. I’ve written chapters and articles on my cell phone, but nothing gets as ready to write as sitting at my desk with a cup of coffee.
What would like to change about your home office?
Do It Write: Where Lyndell Williams writes @laylawriteslove #RLFblog #contemporaryromanceI would like for it to be an actual office with a lock and guard dog sitting outside. One of the biggest challenges in having a corner and not an office is blocking out the world, especially a tenacious pack of kids determined to make your writing time theirs.
I think one of the things I most need is a full space with my books and research. I’m eyeing my oldest son’s bedroom. When he’s finished with college, he’s gonna have to spread his wings so I can get my office.
If money was no object, what would your home office look like?
It wouldn’t be a matter of what but who. I so need an assistant. My scheduling skills are so out of whack, and I need someone to help me keep an organized content calendar for the multiple blogs I manage and manage my time to get semester grading done, progress in writing my next book and contribute to the list of projects I’m committed to completing.
My home office would like a regular one because I would have an assistant with a desk.
How do you juggle writing and family?
I don’t know how to juggle. I drop a bunch of balls all of the time. Fortunately, I have a great husband who makes sure I get out of my chair and spend some time with the family. He’s also awesome at picking up the slack at home despite working 90 hours a week himself.
If I find myself with an immediate deadline, I can count on him to help out around the house so I can keep those keys clicking. It’s extremely important. I couldn’t do any of my work if he didn’t.
What’s the last book about writing that you read?
That would be the Associated Press Stylebook. I kid you not. I write a lot of online articles, so I need that by my side.
I also get into friendly skirmishes with fellow writers about things like the Oxford comma, so I use it for ammunition.
What book or books about writing do you recommend for new authors?
The Best Punctuation Book, Period is pretty great. The author, June Casagrande has a lot of great books on writing.
What do you like to read for relaxation?
I enjoy reading other romance authors. I’ve become hooked on Black women romance authors like Twyla Turner, Love Journey, Reana Malori and Aubree Pynn. They introduce readers to some culturally-specific romance and explore some topics and corners from which other romance authors might not.

    Drakon’s Tear by NJ Walters @njwaltersauthor #RLFblog #PNR

    Drakon’s Tear by NJ Walters

    Genre Paranormal Romance/Shapeshifter
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Dying isn’t an option. I’ve survived a kidnapping, and now I’m on the run from the Knights of the Dragon who want my gift. There’s nothing a dragon loves more than treasure. I’m Abigail Owens, and I can sense gemstones. When I find myself drawn to a beautiful stone bracelet at a tiny shop in Moscow, I can’t help but have it — even though I can sense it’s power. But I didn’t realize with this one decision I’ve just put myself in the middle of a war between the Knights and a Drakon.
I guess I’m just lucky like that.
The only person I trust even a little is Vasili Zima, which is weird since I’m not sure if he wants to kill me or protect me. I’m drawn to him in a way I hadn’t thought possible, and he feels the same way, or he wouldn’t be risking his life to help me. He’s wanted by the bad guys just as much as I am, and staying with me, well, there’s a hundred percent chance I’m about to get us both killed. But I will not be going down without a fight.

(Author’s Note: This book is NOT first person point of view.)

    QUICK

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?…
I write romance, but have explored many different sub-genres—erotic, ménage a trois, contemporary, sci-fi, and paranormal. The past half dozen years or more it’s been mostly paranormal romance. I can’t seem to get enough shifters, especially werewolves and drakons.
How do you come up with ideas?…
Book ideas come from everywhere—TV shows, magazine articles, snippets of overheard conversation, an online quiz, non-fiction books, songs. There is no end to possibilities. It’s all in the combination of the ideas. That’s what makes it so much fun. Sometimes an idea will seemingly pop into my head out of nowhere while I’m out walking or doing housework.
I’ve carried some ideas around with me for years. That’s what happened with the Blood of the Drakon series. I always knew I wanted to write about drakons (the offspring between pure-blooded dragons and human women), but the characters didn’t really start talking to me until a few years ago.
While I was waiting for the drakons, I had plenty of alpha werewolves demanding stories of their own.
What is the single most important part of writing for you?…
Everything starts with the characters. I may have an idea, but until I know the hero and heroine I don’t even think about writing. I write mini bios on index cards. I’ll often learn a lot more about them as I go, but that’s where I start.
Once I understand who the characters are, their story naturally arises from that. I’ll often have a couple of ideas for scenes or conflicts before I begin, but I’m more a pantser than a plotter.
As soon as I know what the first scene is going to be I start writing.
When did you write your first book?…
I wrote my first book back in the mid 1990s. I’d always been a voracious reader, but it never occurred to me that I might write until I was unemployed for a short while. I decided to give it a try and wrote 2 books. I submitted them to a couple of publishers, but they were rejected. I put the books away and didn’t start writing again until 2003. I wrote a short novel and submitted it to one of the early e-publishers and had it accepted. Annabelle Lee was released in October of 2004 (it’s since been rereleased as Uncovering Annabelle).
And the two books I wrote back in the 1990s…they were rewritten and Discovering Dani and The Way Home became the first two books of my Jamesville series.
