Four Ways to Spot a Witch by Kryssie Fortune @KryssieFortune #RLFblog #urbanfantasy

Four ways to Spot a Witch by Kryssie Fortune @KryssieFortune #RLFblog #urbanfantasyKryssie Fortune shares four ways to spot a witch.

    1. Is the witch female?

Women are easily tempted to sin. Remember Eve and that damn apple? It taunted her from the tree branch while poor, innocent Adam ignored it. Historically, women were seen as morally week. Making a pact with the devil opened up a women’s wildest fantasies. Sometime, when struggling as an uneducated peasant, those fantasies were all she had.

Forget science and facts. Although… Okay, witches and flying go together. Ever wondered why? Most bread in the middle ages was rye bread, but that goes moldy fast. That mold’s interesting. It’s called Ergot. Too much is lethal. Smaller amounts are hallucinogenic and can give the illusion of flying. Most witch suspects were healers or herbalists, and they’d include Ergot in their potions. Rub that potion on your broomstick and straddle it, pre-flight. Middle ages remember. No underwear. Their bare genitals absorbed the potion, making them writhe and contort as it sent orgasm speeding though their body. Afterwards, they would think they’d been flying

    2. Does the witch have a pet?

Don’t ever be lonely enough to take in a stray cat or dog, no matter how many purrs or puppy-dog eyes they give you. Witch hunters will claim the Devil sent the pet to her. Some believe the creature can shape shift. Historically witch hunters were warned to be on guard for small snakes, birds, cats, rats, dogs, and griffins. It makes you wonder how many griffins they found.

Pets or familiars didn’t only belong to women. During the English Civil war, Prince Rupert of the Rhine commanded the Cavaliers’ cavalry. By the age of 23, he was an experienced soldier, and everywhere he went, he took his huge white poodle, Boy, with him.

Parliamentarians thought the dog was Prince Rupert’s familiar, or even the Devil in disguise. They even claimed the dog could catch bullets in its mouth. Boy held the rank of Sergeant-major-general. After the cavaliers lost the Battle of Marston Moor, parliamentarians shot Boy, some say with a silver bullet. So, devil’s familiar? Werewolf? Or just a well- loved dog? You decide.

    3. Does the witch have a wart?

Women breastfeed babies. Since I can’t find a reference to a female witch catcher, I assume they were male. Men are fascinated with women’s breasts, right? So, if the poor suspect had a third teat somewhere on her body, then that was a secret place for her familiar to suckle. Clearly men are terrified of women, why else would they need a panel of expert females to help find the hidden wart. Or maybe the men didn’t mind looking at the women’s breasts but not at her more private places.

    4. Is the witch annoying?

What? Who decides this one? Does she get drunk and dance naked around the village? Some might call that local color. Does she come begging at the manor door? Surely powerful men had a duty to help the poor. Perhaps, if they were powerful, they were also greedy. What better way to not give alms than to out the poor beggar woman as a witch.

Why my interest in witches? Easy, the Tempest, the heroine in my book, Claimed by the Vampire, Seduced by the Werewolf is one. Since she’s scared to touch her powers, she’s not a very good one, but then there’s the exploding cauldron to consider. Or the time an injured vampire crash landed on her carpet. Or the way her demon death spell bounced off a cluster of spider demons. All things considered, she’s probably best leaving her magic alone.

Kryssie Fortune’s Claimed by the Vampire, Seduced by the Werewolf

After seven centuries, Elias, a former Spartan turned vampire, finds his eternal bride.

Seth, Elias’s werewolf half-brother, scents his mate.

Vampire and werewolf loathe each other. The only thing they agree on is that Tempest is their mate–and they’re not sharing.

A prophecy will force Tempest, a twenty-first-century witch, to choose between them. As the half-brothers vie to win her heart, they teach her about spanking, the way pain heightens pleasure, and the joy of multiple orgasms.

A vampire can’t survive without his fated bride. A werewolf dies if he loses his mate. Their future rests in Tempest’s hands. Which one will she choose?

Note: While loosely linked to the Scattered Siblings series, this book may be read as a standalone story.

Kryssie likes her contemporary heroes ex-military and dominant. Her heroines are kick ass females who can hold their own against whatever life – or Kryssie – throws at them.

Kryssie’s pet hates are unhappy endings, and a series that end on a cliff hanger.

Her books are all stand-alone even when part of series. Plot always comes before sex, but when her heroines and heroes get together, the sex is explosive and explicit. One review called it downright sensual.

    Drakon’s Prey by NJ Walters @njwaltersauthor #RLFblog #PNR

Drakon's Prey by NJ Walters @njwaltersauthor #RLFblog #PNRWelcome NJ Walters author of Drakon’s Prey, a new Paranormal Romance.

Why did you write this book?

Drakon’s Prey is the second book in the new Blood of the Drakon series. A drakon is the son of a dragon and a human woman. I started this series with the premise of four drakons, all half brothers (same drakon sire, different mothers). They are 4000 years old and they have an enemy who will stop at nothing to capture and control them. Not only do drakons have great wealth, but their blood will cure all disease and prolong the life of the human drinking it. This is Tarrant’s story.

What is your favorite genre to read?

Romance. No surprise there. I love all kinds of romance—paranormal, historical, contemporary, and romantic suspense. I also like nonfiction and tend to read a lot of self help/spiritual books as well.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

That’s a tough one. There are so many. Eve Dallas from J.D. Robb’s In Death series is right up there. She’s tough and smart, but has a tender side, which she shows very reluctantly. I’ve read the entire series and am always waiting for the next book.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m working on another drakon book for the series.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

Lots happening in the coming months. My new publisher, Entangled, will be rereleasing my entire Samhain Publishing backlist (over 30 books), which was taken down with Samhain Publishing closed. I also have a new drakon book—Drakon’s Plunder—on July 3rd.

I’m thrilled to be part of an incredible anthology—Blue Collar: A Boys Behaving Badly anthology. My story is “Roadside Assistance.” It is available on June 13th, and can be pre-ordered for only 99-cents on Amazon.

The remaining three books in my Dalakis Passion vampire series will be rereleased between now and the end of the year. And there will probably be more.

Please tell us about your latest book.

Valeriya Azarov turned her back on the family business to write and illustrate children’s books. But with a sister who leads the Knights of the Dragon, it’s impossible to get away from the secret society whose mission is to destroy and enslave dragons. When information falls into her hands along with the opportunity to save at least one of the ancient creatures, she can’t turn away any longer.

When a woman moves into the cabin above Tarrant Cooper’s secret underground lair, he’s both suspicious and intrigued. He hasn’t lasted four thousand years being careless, so when he suspects her of being a part of the Knights, the plan is to kidnap her and find out how much the organization knows about him and his brothers.

He’s drawn to Valeriya, but trusting her could get him killed. Even if she’s a pawn in the war between drakons and Knights, giving her his heart would mean forever.

    Blame it on the Moon

It’s the height of the Para-moon and Sheriff Jack Lang is up to his ‘6’ in alligators. Defending those weaker than himself is in his DNA which is what drove him to become a Navy pilot. Now, who is he kidding? Alligators he could handle! But supernatural bad guys?

Ragtag doesn’t begin to describe his band of temporary ‘heroes’. If he has to go to war with the group that showed up at dawn, he might as well start cutting up white sheets and attaching them to garden stakes.

With Tempe and the other Paramortals ill or incapacitated and the sudden appearance of beings he’s never heard of, will Jack be able to keep Destiny out of the hands of their enemies for the rest of the power down and—very important—keep the humans in the dark? It’s only twenty-four hours. If worse comes to worse, he has a dragon on his side and a few surprises up his sleeve. “Yippe, ki, yi…”

But a lot can happen in twenty-four hours and things don’t always go as planned.

    Take These Broken Wings

Blame it on the Moon by Livia Quinn @liviaquinn #RLFblog #paranormalStrap in ’cause it’s a wild ride through Destiny, or should I say Middle Earth…

Five months ago, Sheriff Jack Lang would have sworn there was no such thing as vampires, tempestaeries, djinn or dragons. That was before he met Tempest Pomeroy, his sexy redheaded mail lady and trouble magnet. He’d fallen for her before he found out about her “special abilities”. But that wasn’t what turned his life upside down. No, to say Jack’s world had gone FUBAR was like saying Wolverine’s fingernails were long enough for a manicure.

Tempe had been afraid her supernatural nature would be a problem for Jack, who’d mistaken Destiny for a “Mayberry-like” small town, but that didn’t explain why he’d left her in favor of haunting the highest levees in the parish. Sure, he’d received a shock, but what was it going to take to get him to return to his life and to her? A stubborn man is one thing; a grumpy, depressed twenty-ton dragon was a bit more of a challenge.

  • Is It True: Day for Night by Stacey E Bryan @StaceyEBryan #RLFblog #Paranormal #Comedy
    Is It True,  Paranormal

Is It True: Day for Night by Stacey E Bryan @StaceyEBryan #RLFblog #Paranormal #Comedy

Is It True: Day for Night by Stacey E Bryan @StaceyEBryan #RLFblog #Paranormal #ComedyPlay Is It True with today’s guest Stacey E. Bryan, author of Day for Night, an urban paranormal comedy. This is a game in which authors answer yes and no questions. They can elaborate on answers as much as they choose.

First, tell us about your book.

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG13

Day For Night is a Los Angeles-based urban paranormal comedy. Rife with pop references and scathing commentary on L.A., we follow main protagonist Rae Miller, a 38-40 something wannabe actress who has recently been voted off her reality TV show, as she languishes at a crossroads. She barely has time for self-pity, though, when the unthinkable happens: she witnesses an alien abduction in broad daylight!

Worse, Rae soon discovers that aliens aren’t the only otherworldly beings inhabiting the world, and after escaping a terrifying almost-abduction herself, she succumbs to a sexy Nosferatu’s silky assurances, becoming undead in order to up her alien Ultimate Fighting skills.

While not a strict romance, Day for Night does contain romantic elements. While Rae juggles constant male attention, only one person truly has her heart, although he refuses to have sex with her. I would say the heat level stabilizes at “smoldering” for most of the novel with one brief hot scene which, I although I used the rating PG13, the language that passes between them is definitely R.

Rae is not your usual protagonist since she’s somewhat older and also mixed race, two topics that are significant for anyone living in L.A. and/or trying to survive in The Biz. Some of her life is behind her, and she’s not quite sure how that happened. She’s also resentful that her love-life has stalled, and the dating scene is not only unfulfilling but, she discovers, downright dangerous!

The title Day for Night was taken from Truffaut’s movie title in order to reference the Hollywood environment, although “day for night” comes to mean something very different for Rae after her “Hail Mary” transformation into something…other.

After all, we all have a little bit of Rae inside us: when faced with the incomprehensible, in all likelihood, what would the average person do? Come on, be honest. They’d thank God for Jack Daniels and denial!

Now, tell us Yes or No for each answer below. Feel free to explain any (or none) of your answers.

    Is it true:

    this is your first book?
Yes. My first published book. But then, who doesn’t have several other novels stuffed away into drawers and boxes? It’s probably best that those never see the light of day.
this book is part of a series?
Yes. It’s standalone, but I feel like I left enough elements hanging somewhat that a few folks might be thinking, “Lucy, you’ve got a lot of ‘splaining to do!”
you lost sleep while writing this book?
Yes, I lost some sleep and pulled my hair out and went crazy sometimes.
you did research for this book?
Yes. Small facts throughout like the names of the moons of Jupiter, what the chemical make-up of chlorophyll is, the definition of antimatter. Stuff that’s good for Jeopardy!
some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)
Yes. Some characters are definitely not human, and some of them are even yearning to be human.
this book has more than one genre?
Yes. It’s an urban paranormal comedy peppered throughout with romantic, mystery, and action-adventure elements.
you speak more than one language?
Yes. I can speak passable Spanish, having studied it from age 9 throughout college. It’s a crime, though, that I’m so rusty at it.
you grew up where you live now?
Yes. Born in San Francisco, grew up in the San Fernando Valley, lived in NYC for a while, then came back home. On a side note, scarily, I left NYC right before 9/11 happened.
    you love to read?
Yes. Reading is almost like breathing oxygen. I need it in a way that makes me super-glad that I never started smoking or took up gambling.
    you are never late?
No. I’m often late. It seems to happen when I say to myself, “Oh, I’m making good time with this,” and invariably jinx myself.
    you love pizza?
Yes. I think pizza’s one of the best things ever invented in the history of Earth.
    you love sushi?
No, I do not love sushi, and I never will.
    you have a pet?
No. I only have the memory of my beloved black cat, Mr. Smith, who acted like a dog and followed me everywhere.

Stacey was a tomboy growing up, fond of gymnastics, climbing trees with Mr. Smith (her cat) and reading. While on vacation with her family when she was 13, a broken toe resulted in an inability to wear high heels when she got older (or at least not for very long), further alienating her from accepted feminine standards. After receiving her English degree at UCLA, she worked at a dude ranch, for a resume writer in Beverly Hills, in the classified ads department of The Reader, and eventually ended up captioning for the hearing impaired. She has written about tortured artists, suicide, and anorexia nervosa, but has found that light, humorous writing is a lot more fun, thus the foray into aliens and vampires in a Los Angeles setting. When she moved to New York, she found her husband in Brooklyn, and they eventually moved back to L.A. where they both write between bingeing episodes of Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and True Detective years after everyone else has already seen them.
