A Stroke at Midnight is my first venture into BDSM romance. I am ready to provide readers with more erotic stories, and Mateo and Deja are some hot characters.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?
I don’t have one. I like to connect with an expanse of characters for different reasons.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am finishing the third book in the exciting Open to Love novella series, published by After Hours Publications.
My new story will feature Rahmah and Baaz Hamid, a steamy Muslim couple who must struggle against people trying to tear them apart.

Be on the lookout for the books The Trouble with That Sistah, book three in the Open to Love series and Drowning in Shallow Waters, book three in the Brothers in Law series. His cousin Dmitri gets sent to warn those who want to enable Raul in his addictions, to stay away from him. And Kelly’s mom Stella, is a retired CIA agent. Once they appear in the series, they often turn up in subsequent books.
What is the overall theme in this series?
When you know and accept yourself, you are more attractive to others, and more likely to find someone to love, who will love you back. True love isn’t necessary for a good life, but it improves your chances of happiness. And a natural setting leads to peace of mind.

I love to go camping up in Grand Marais, Minnesota. It’s a beautiful small town on the shore of Lake Superior, with a thriving arts community. Drive up the Gunflint Trail and you’ll find resorts, campgrounds, and many lakes designed to let you reconnect with nature. I got the idea for the first book one summer when I was sad about leaving. I imagined falling in love with a local person, so you’d have a reason to move there. Writing these books lets me pretend I’m still up there. Plus I’ve grown very fond of the people in these books.

I have always had characters intruding into my thoughts, showing scenes from their lives. When I ignore them, they start to yell louder. If I write their stories so they can live in readers’ heads as well, they usually leave me alone. Soon the next voices appear. I like the noise. I write romances that involve strong, independent women who enjoy casual flings, but are not looking to fall in love. Enter the man who feels the same way–until they both realize this is different. I love the passion of new love!
I keep busy with multiple jobs, and have to squeeze in writing when I should be sleeping. As often as possible, I go out with my family, or just my husband, to view the night stars around a campfire. Stories present themselves to me while driving, while dreaming, and especially while camping.
I write romances that involve strong, independent women who don’t mind casual flings, but who are not looking to fall in love. Enter the man who decides this is the woman for him. I thinks that how they ultimately both realize that they have found the one, is the most interesting part of a romance.

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?
Yes–in two sub-genre. Jenna Stewart is the name I use for ménage books (with the exception of two space opera ménage books, as Dee). As Jenna, I write historical and shifter ménage romance.
How do you come up with ideas?
I had the idea for the Sisters O’Ryan books (four of them), just kind of overnight. It felt like no real thought at all. Not sure where the idea came from, exactly. But another book I’d thought about for years was also historical. When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a nun in the worst way. My mom worked in a Catholic hospital and I was around nuns a great deal and I admired them. Back in the 1950s, nuns were very different from what we see today, so I wondered about a nun who joined the convent and was content–until she went home to Oregon to empty her mother’s house after her death. There she discovers secrets that have affected her whole life, and desire such as she’d never imagined. She was no longer content. After the passion she experienced, could she return to the convent? My publisher called it Seducing Their Nun–a title I’ve always hated. I wanted to call it Sins of the Mother, and if you give the book a try, you’ll understand why. I know people who have said they wouldn’t read the book because it was disrespectful to the church, but I promise, it isn’t! Anyway, from that book, I created a series of historical ménage romances that were connected by one character in the previous book–like six degrees of separation. The shifter books came about as a lark, just to see if I could do it.
I like ménage romance because it demonstrates that a woman can indeed love two men at the same time. However (sigh), I also think it takes very unusual people to maintain such a relationship. Not too many of them around.
What is the single most important part of writing for you?
Creating an idea that will appeal to readers. And it also has to appeal to me as a writer. I have lots of ideas I think would work for a book but I don’t believe in the concept I would have to write or I simply don’t understand it, so I can’t possibly write it. I want to create work that people like and I would like to read myself.
When did you write your first book?
Gosh! It makes me feel old. As Dee, I wrote Impatient Passion in 2002. I wrote Burning Bridges (as Anne Krist) in 2005. As Jenna, I wrote Regan in 2012. You see it took me a while to come around to focusing on ménage!

I like to surprise the reader. Not every line can be a surprise, but the reader wants to be entertained, and surprises are entertaining, aren’t they?

Julie’s a tomboy, so she would probably watch football or some kind of sports on TV. If her favorite teams weren’t playing, she would read the latest crime thriller novels on the bestseller’s lists.
What kind of food would she impulse buy if hungry?
Potato chips, definitely.
Describe the kind of clothes she prefers to wear.
Tank tops and comfortable cargo shorts or khakis. She only dresses up when the occasion calls for it, but trust me, she can rock a slinky black dress and high heels.
Does she know how to fix things?
Oh, yeah. Since she’s a pilot, she knows all about the mechanics of a plane and how it operates. Give her a wrench and she’s happy.
She tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.
She took a chance on a guy completely different from her normal type. Seth was intelligent, sensitive, and driven while her past boyfriends were carefree and macho. Some of those jerks even had the tendency to jump into other women’s beds. Even though she and Seth started out hot and heavy, he ended up caring more about his scientific work than he did spending time with her. After he forgot about her birthday, she called it quits.
How does she act around children she doesn’t know?
She’s standoffish around kids, whether she knows them or not.
What is she like first thing in the morning?
Coffee. If you wake her up before the alarm goes off, you better have a cup of java in your hands. After a dose of caffeine, she turns from a grouch to a woman who’s ready to seize the day.
Can she use chopsticks?
Yep. She’s eaten enough Chinese takeout to master the delicate art of dining with chopsticks.
Does she drink coffee? If so, how does she take it? If not, what does she drink instead?

Just kidding! She’ll drink coffee night and day if she had to. She takes it black in the morning and with cream throughout the day.
What apps would she have on her phone?
Hmmm. Time zones, terrain, airflow, geography, and stuff like that are important factors in her job, so she’d have apps to reflect that.
Android or iPhone?
iPhone. The sparkly blue case she has for her phone is one of the few girly things she owns.
Earrings or unpierced ears?
She loves to wear diamond studs in her ears. Seth had given them to her for a Christmas present before they broke up.
Tattoos or unadorned skin?
No tats, but she’s not opposed to getting one. Maybe someday.
Personal vehicle or public transport?
She loves her sporty red car, but she’d rather fly than drive.
Recycle or toss?
Recycle, of course. Litterbugs are a big no-no in her book.

Nic—or Frank as he told Allison his name was—doesn’t think much about food. He’s one of those eats-to-live people, not lives-to-eat. Currently, he has a housekeeper who leaves him meals at home and a secretary who makes sure he eats at work, or he’d probably never remember food. On impulse, though, he’d buy junk food like Hostess Cupcakes.
Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.
At work he’s a suit kind of guy. For very casual wear, he’ll do jeans and a tee shirt, but most often, he’s in slacks and a button-down shirt collar—with a sports jacket if he’s going out. Casual for Nic means no tie.
Does he know how to fix things?
Yes, especially if it’s tracing down an electrical issue and rectifying it. He can repair things, but at this point, he’d prefer to hire someone else to do it.
He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.
He decided to get involved in robotics with his company. He jumped in feet first and didn’t lay the groundwork. The project never took off. But he got his act together and took time to learn a few things and a year later, his company developed robotics used to help people with head and limb injuries. Nic doesn’t have a lot of patience, but he learned through this experience that taking time at the beginning can pay off at the end.
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
Uncomfortably. He’s really not a children kind of guy.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
Ready to go! He’s up at first light for a run and then is ready for work.
Can he use chopsticks?
Yes. He does business all over the world and so has accustomed himself to cultural mores. He might not think about food, but he thinks about his customers.

Yes, black.

He has no idea. His housekeeper takes care of all that. But he thinks she recycles.
