Interview with Seth James

Tell us about yourself,
please.
Uh, hey everyone. I’m Seth James. I live in Austin, TX
in a condo my dad owns and create music with my brother and my band. I’m twenty-four.
I live the color green, and when I’m not banging on my drums, I like to box, wrestle,
and have a cold beer with the guys at the house.
What is it that you want,
but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.
Err…well, I thought I wanted my music to take off so I could
shove it in my dad’s face and make him acknowledge my success. But then I met Alice. And she ties me in knots.
(He clears his throat) I think I want her, but I don’t need her. And I was doing
good staying away from her, but I found her crying in that stairwell near our apartments
and I can’t seem to shake her from my mind.
What inner doubt causes
you the most difficulty?
(Seth drops his head. Longish brown waves fall over his forehead
and cover his blue eyes.) I’m afraid I’ll end up like my mom. I don’t want to go
through life thinking I have it all figured out and then bam. Out of nowhere something
comes along and knocks you for a crazy loop.
What’s your external complication?
In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
Well, I fear that I’m going up against a pretty powerful man.
He could ruin everything for me and Alice. He’s someone that doesn’t have any morals
and sure as hell doesn’t have any qualms about breaking people. (A nerve twitches
in his jaw.)
Tell us about your significant
other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
Alice?
That girl has me fucking twisted… Oh, I can’t say that here? Sorry. (He shifts
in his seat.) Alice
is like a breath of fresh air followed by a blast of carbon dioxide. When she’s
high, everyone is flying with her. When she’s low, I’m afraid to leave her alone.
(Seth runs a hand through his hair and blows out through his mouth.) She’s that
dark butterfly, you know? The one that with its wings closed looks like a moth,
no color at all, but then it fans out and it’s a beauty you’ve never witnessed.
She’s everything.
What is your family like?
My dad is a good honest man. He works all the time. Never had
much time for us after my mom died. And Gabe, my baby brother, he’s a full job.
I have to keep him out of trouble. He’s a lot like our mom.
If someone from your past
showed up, who would you NOT want it to be, and why?
(His eyes glass over.) My mom. I think she killed herself because
of me. I’m not sure. But I sure as hell know that I don’t want to find out. Who
could live with that kind of guilt.
Are you happy with the
way your story ended? Why or why not?
Hey, I get the girl. Isn’t that the best way to end a story?
I don’t think there was any other way it could have ended. Alice and I were destined.
I’m writing a song about that woman. And someday, I’m going to f—freaking marry
her. (He leans forward.) You thought I was going to say it, huh?

About the Writer

You have the length of
a tweet (140 characters) to describe yourself as a writer. Let’s see what you can
do.
Paranormal Romance first, Series writer, Erotic Romance second,
NA too, Dark and twisted characters, Hot sex scenes, social media friend
Why did you choose to
write about this character?
It’s not a secret that rock stars are hot right now. I love RS
novels. I wanted to create a musician that was a little more indie that superstar.
And that’s what I did. Seth is a songwriter, a musician, and just the right balance
of good guy and bad boy for Alice.
Was there anything you
discovered about this character that was a surprise to you?
I wrote half of Drowning, and then realized I hated Seth. So
I played with him in character sketches before I found that his backstory wasn’t
as dark as Alice’s.
So I really tore up his childhood. Once I brought out his painful past, he bled
onto the paper.
Why do you write?
I write because I have a lot of sorrow in my soul. I think there
are many others out there like me and I want to reach them. I want to find the people
with a past that’s a little messed up and show them that happy endings aren’t just
a fairytale.
