Be as smart as Sherlock Holmes!

Arthur Conan Doyle’s original tales include many references to everyday Victorian life that are no longer part of current readers’ world. What Holmes would have eaten from a can while searching for the hound of the Baskervilles, Watson’s enjoyment of a yellow-back novel, or the proper use of a gasogene would have been common knowledge to the Victorian contemporary but compels modern readers to run to the nearest reference book. These twenty-five short essays pull such items from the past and expand on their significance in the story. As an additional bonus, this book contains an essay on the role of scandal in Holmes’ cases, originally appearing in a collected volume of essays on feminism and agency. After enjoying these concise treatises on Holmes’ world, readers will have a deeper understanding and appreciation of both the times and the life of the world’s greatest consulting detective.

this is your first book?

No. I have a series about Sherlock Holmes and other fiction books.

this book is part of a series?

Yes, This is volume 4

you lost sleep while writing this book?

Sometimes. These essays were originally written for Sherlockian newsletters and sometimes I was on my own self-imposed deadlines

you did research for this book?

Yes! You will find my references for each essay.

some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)

No, but some of the subjects aren’t human—like gasogenes.

this book has more than one genre?

No. Definitely nonfiction, but it would be of interest to those who enjoy Sherlock Holmes, history and trivia.

you speak more than one language?

Yes. I am fluent in Spanish and have studied French and Russia (but not fluent by any means)

you grew up where you live now?

Yes. Kinda strange. I left my hometown when I was 18, but returned in my 40s after spending 10 years abroad

you love to read?

Yes! I’m really into audiobooks these days.

you are never late?

No. I’m constantly a day late and a dollar short. A habit I’m trying to work on it.

Yes! When you are constantly on a diet, it’s a guilty pleasure. (I know, you can eat less to keep in your diet, but not me!)

you love sushi?

Yes! Within certain limits. Although I have to say I once had the chance to have sushi at the fish market in Tokyo (can’t get it any fresher unless you were on the boat), and really loved that!

you have a pet?

Yes. I have an attack cat. We’ve spayed him, but he still likes to suddenly leap at your calf or ankle, and doesn’t like being petted.
