Interview: Brenda Corey Dunne author of Dependent @overdunne #RLFblog #amreading

    Dependent

    About the Book

    Title: Dependent: A Novel
    Genre: Fiction/ Literary
    Author Name: Brenda Corey Dunne
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R for violence, sexual
    themes.

    Interview with Brenda Corey Dunne

    Why did you write this
    book?
About nine years ago, I took a look in the mirror, and—like many
military spouses—faced one of the things that scared me the most. What would happen
if I got that soul-destroying knock on the door? I was in my mid-thirties, not working,
and in danger of losing my hard-earned physiotherapy license. What would I do if
I was left alone, like so many military spouses are, to raise three children with
no career? It was an eye-opener, for sure. I sat down that day, and wrote it out—in
fictional form—and then put it away. It was too hard, too emotionally draining to
think about. I couldn’t write it. But I knew, deep down inside, that Ellen’s story
was one that had to be written. It stayed in the back of my mind as I watched friends,
colleagues, and neighbors deal with that very knock. Finally, in 2012, I forced
myself to push through and finish it. It’s not an easy story to read, nor is it
an easy story to write. But I wanted to make it real.
    What is your favorite
    genre to read?
Just about anything YA, especially urban fantasy, and some pre-dystopian.
I read for entertainment. Life is real enough as it is!
    What is your favorite
character from fiction (not including your own characters)?
Depends on which book I’m reading at the time. I’m fickle, and
switch regularly. If I had to choose I’d say Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice.
    I love her wit.
    Do you enjoy films and/or
TV shows? Which are your favorites?
I love to escape in a good movie, and like books my favorites
change regularly. I loved Super 8—Aliens, coming of age and some really good lines:
“Drugs are so bad!”. I also loved the Keira Knightly version of Pride
and Prejudice. Could watch that movie a hundred times. But for pure wit, intelligence
and brilliant screenwriting I’d have to choose the TV show Sherlock. Every episode
is like a mini-movie in itself.
    What are you working on
at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
Right now I’m in the middle of a cross-continental move, so my
laptop is a little lonely. I have two projects on the go: a sequel to Treasure in
the Flame (my self-pubbed historical fiction), and also a contemporary story about
the meaning of ‘home’ for a military child. Both are at the 20k mark or so, so lots
    of work to come!
    Please tell us about your
    latest book.
As I mentioned above, Dependent is not an easy book. It’s the
story of how a widowed military spouse (a ‘dependent’) re-discovers her self-identity.
Married young, and the victim of sexual assault, she is riddled with guilt and self-doubt
when the love of her life is killed in a military training accident. She drifts
in a grey, anchorless fog, haunted by memories. Only when she meets up with an old
friend from her past can she deal with her demons and move on.
The story is raw, emotional and sometimes uncomfortable. But
it’s also heartwarming and romantic. Get out your tissues.
When 45-year-old Ellen Michaels loses her husband to a tragic
military accident, she is left in a world of gray. For 25 years her life has been
dictated by the ubiquitous They—the military establishment that has included her
like chattel with John’s worldly goods—his Dependents, Furniture, and Effects. They—who
have stolen her hopes, her dreams and her innocence, and now in mere months will
take away the roof over her head. Ellen is left with nothing to hold on to but memories
and guilt and an awful secret that has held her in its grip since she was 19. John’s
untimely death takes away her anchor, and now, without the military, there is no
one to tell her where to go, what to do—no one to dictate who she is. Dependent
deals with issues ever-present in today’s service families—early marriage, frequent
long absences, the culture of rank, and posttraumatic stress, as well as harassment
and abuse of power by higher-ranking officials. It presents a raw and realistic
view of life for the lives of the invisible support behind the uniform.

    Interview with TD Hassett

Why did you write this book?
I didn’t mean to write this book, it just wouldn’t leave me alone.
I had been working on my first paranormal romance and this suspenseful love story
kept bugging me. I couldn’t stop thinking about Darling Roberts and her story. Maybe
it was because I named my Siamese cat after her character but whatever, I couldn’t
get her situation out of my head.
Perhaps another reason the story wouldn’t leave me alone was
the setting. The story takes place primarily on a secluded lake in Connecticut where some folks
have gone missing. I live on just such a lake, although to my knowledge no one has
turned up murdered around here. For a variety of reasons the hero and heroine will
have to weather a couple of weeks together in a spooky lake house. Passion, drama
and mystery ensue. I promise a happy ending but I refuse to make it easy for this
    couple!
What is your favorite genre to read?
I love contemporary romance the most, followed closely by historical
    romance and mystery.
What is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own characters)?
I just finished reading another author’s series and fell a little
in love with Jack Storm. He’s another sexy rock god with a good heart. What’s not
    to like?
Do you enjoy films and/or TV shows? Which are your favorites?
I watch a lot of movies but not so much television. I did really
enjoy Lost, especially all those episodes where Sawyer takes his shirt off. His
    character called to me.
What are you working on at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
I am working on two books right now. One is about an Incubus
that falls in love with a veterinary technician. Will his love be strong enough
to let her go with her soul intact? I am also working on the prequel to my Love
and Music Series. The band is just starting to get off the ground when Rick Houston
is injured on stage. Troubled nurse, Jenni Mitchell can’t stand this rude rocker
and can’t wait to get him off of her floor. Unfortunately for her, Rick is going
to be sticking by her for a while and there’s nothing she can do to change that,
at least not for three months. She needs money after Rick’s advice gets her fired
and he needs a fiancé for a K1 visa to stay in the States. They’re both hiding something
from the other but neither will be brave enough to show their true selves. It has
been fun writing about this opposite attracts couple.
    Please tell us about your
    latest book.
Darling Roberts is going back to the lake house her mother disappeared
from thirteen years ago. She needs to decide to stay or sell. The locals believe
the place cursed, but her best friend thinks it would be a blast to spend the weekend
there before heading to Europe. BFF Madison is
determined to set Darling up even if that means dragging a recently widowed rock-and-roll
drummer to the scene of a murder.
Ross Daniels has a secret. He can’t stand the pitying looks well-wishers
have given him since his wife’s accidental death. The European leg of the Becket
tour can’t come soon enough. A weekend stay at a mutual friend’s lake house seems
like a decent way to kill a couple of days before hopping a plane, at least until
he spends some time with temptation herself. Passions ignite and Ross feels his
heart beginning to beat again. Darling isn’t who he thought she was and he can’t
get enough of her sweet soul and lush curves.
Darling is determined to take charge of her life and the lake
house is just the place to begin. Ross is a scrumptious distraction but she knows
she has to keep things in perspective. Why would a world famous drummer want to
hang out with her in a small town that even the locals want her run out of?

    Author Bio

mind again and studying education. Currently Ms. Hassett lives in Connecticut with her very

    Interview with Daisy Banks

    Why did you write this
    book?
This book is the offshoot of another I started. I realized I’d
begun in the middle of something and needed the reasons behind those events for
things to make sense. Therefore A Perfect Match came into being. I had a great time
writing this story and found the characters, like their world, compelling. I think
this is a cross genre romance, part fantasy and part sci-fi.
This is the first time I have written something so complex and
I enjoyed the challenge of world building and creating a religion, government and
social structure. The society my characters function in is one where they shine
as individuals and as a couple. I always enjoy seeing my characters overcome obstacles
and Varon and Anwell face a raft of difficulties in A Perfect Match. I also like
to see my characters grow and this couple develop as individuals as they learn to
    depend on each other.
I guess the most basic reason of all as to why I wrote this story
is that it was in my head and I wanted to tell the tale. The sci-fi futuristic elements
to the story are a step in a different direction for me and I surprised myself with
some of the aspects of the story.
    What is your favorite
    genre to read?
I enjoy fantasy and have done for a long time. I like fantasy
romance and epic fantasy stories. One of the joys of fantasy is the range and depth
it offers both writers and readers.
    What is your favorite
    character from fiction?
My all time favorite character remains Merlin in all the many
interpretations of his story. I like the many different qualities within the character
of Merlin. I also enjoy the range and depth different writers have discovered showing
    many elements to him.
    Do you enjoy films and/or
TV shows? Which are your favorites?
I enjoy movies in many genres and I love some of the old movies
from the 30’s and 40’s. My favorite version of Pride and Prejudice is the black
and white version. I adore Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance movies and anything
with Katherine Hepburn in it. I watch more up to date movies too and I have a big
    collection of DVD’s.
The two most memorable films I saw in a cinema are Jaws, because
the whole audience stood clapping and cheering at the end when the shark got killed,
and Lord of the Rings part 1 because Hobbiton looked so close to my imagining.
I don’t watch a great deal of TV but I do like Sherlock Holmes
and Dr. Who. I tend to watch historical documentary style programs rather than anything
    else.
    What are you working on
at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
At present, I am thrilled to have my book A Perfect Match released
today by Taliesin Publishing and am working on some promotional activities and blogging
    about that story.
I am also in edits with the sequel to Timeless, To Eternity,
which will be published by Lyrical Press, A Kensington Imprint, later this year.
I am very excited that this story will be available to readers soon.
Next year my fantasy story, Marked for Magic, will be released
    by Lyrical Press too.
I am also working on short story for a group anthology but that’s
all a bit hush hush right now.
There is a new historical as a work in progress too and a short
story that should be finished by the end of July. All in all, there is lots going
    on and I’m working hard.
    Please tell us about your
    latest book.
Commander Varon Jarlath is an interstellar water diviner of great
talent and a hero to the city that survives because of his successful missions.
His popularity with the folk adds to the reasons behind the enmity of Lord Chardel,
leader of the city government body, the Carnag.
Varon understands the malice behind the offer of a bride and
the political difficulty he might face should he refuse the generosity of the Carnag.
His hopes for the success of his marriage are not high until he meets his bride.
Anwell Nastor has spent every day since her twelfth birthday
    in the Temple offering
prayer chants to the gods. The shock of her wedding almost overwhelms her but she
    has courage and a mind.
Political intrigue, the danger to the folk and the city all push
Varon and his bride to work together to gain popularity so they can have a voice
    and make a difference.

    Interview with June Kramin

    Why did you write this
    book?
I only do what the voices in my head tell me to. ;) Honestly,
I was in bed one night and a character name popped into my head. Sounds cheesy,
but it was Parker Peters. Yup – Spiderman in reverse. I don’t know why, but I was
determined to write something around that. I was in the middle of another project
at the time, but once I started – it just ran itself. It’s by far the most action
I’ve written and I loved the way it all fell together. I loved the mystery of Parker.
Just like his name came to me with no clue who he was, he was just “there”
and I wasn’t sure who he would turn into. Hands down, he’s my favorite male MC to
    date!
    What is your favorite
    genre to read?
I like a lot of suspense. I love the “can’t wait to turn
    the page” feeling.
What is your favorite character from fiction (not including your
    own characters)?
For many years now, it has been Lucas Davenport – John Sandford’s
main character in his Prey series.
    Do you enjoy films and/or
TV shows? Which are your favorites?
We cancelled TV almost 10 years ago. We’re not reality fans and
it seemed that’s all that was on. We are big movie people, though. We’ve gotten
into a few TV shows that we found on Netflix. Currently we’re catching up on Leverage
and Castle. With my middle grade books, fun fantasies are also favorite. Once Upon
a Time and Grimm are on the list as well.
    What are you working on
at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?
Like with my characters running the show, I let my fans bully
me. I received an awesome e-mail about someone loving my novel: “Money Didn’t
Buy Her Love”. She was hoping for a sequel so I wrote it. I was glad someone
else’s mind went where mine had gone with a secondary character. I’m on the last
edits then it will be off to my editor. Same for “I Got Your Back, Hailey”.
My 1st two 5-star reviews mentioned wanting more so I am working on that
as well. I love to follow a series. I hope I can keep the intensity up with Hailey
and her crew and keep them coming. I do still have a few older novels that are easier
romance reads on my laptop and the last few of my middle grade series. Eventually
they will need to be beaten into shape and get out there as well. I always have
a few pots on the fire.
    Please tell us about your
    latest book.
I Got Your Back, Hailey is full of twists and turns and surprises.
Parker and Hailey meet by chance, but he discovers she’s who he’d been searching
for. They find out that they share a connection to the man that wants her dead.
Together they try to find ways to prove his guilt while trying to stay alive.
A jailbreak of some needed muscle, a sassy young pilot, a sexy
stewardess, and a computer geek with a Gilligan’s Island fetish make up my favorite
    list of secondary characters ever!
I love our summer road trips. Austin, Texas
was last summer’s destination for a convention. It made for a great scene here,
    as well as Las Vegas
a few years prior. Hailey’s distaste for California
traffic stems from my experience a few years back as well. LOL. Guess if I’m going
to complete the sequel, I’ll need to road trip again. J
When Hailey stumbles upon a backpack full of money on her nightly
jog, she is forced to flee the security of her secret identity.
Although the sudden appearance of a man that had been flirting
with her earlier seems odd, Hailey accepts Parker’s help in getting the heavy bag
home. Within moments of arriving, they escape under gunfire. The men it was intended
for want it back, and Hailey has now made herself a target.
Safe in a motel room, the two of them discover the truth: although
their meeting was an accident, Parker had been involved in the bag’s drop and she
had been his assignment all along. Now, getting Hailey away safely is Parker’s new
mission. Together they struggle to put together the pieces of Hailey’s past and
discover that they have more in common than they thought.
Being on the run, keeping Hailey’s family safe, and searching
for clues to put away the man that wants her dead are hard enough. Falling in love
in the middle of it all was the last thing either one of them expected.

Light My Fire by Kristina Knight

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Lily MacIntyre’s life is offtrack, and she knows exactly how to right it: shed her America’s
sweetheart image in a big way. Getting down and dirty in a limo with rocker Nate
Lansford seems like the perfect solution. Plus, she’s had a mad crush on him practically

    Interview with Kristina Knight

Why did you write this book?

I’ve had a love affair with music all my life. It started with
the Beach Boys (which my mom introduced me to when I hit high school) and then the
pop stars of the late 80s/early 90s (with some hair metal thrown in). Rock stars
fascinate me, so when Nate popped into my head I knew I had to write his story!

What is your favorite genre to read?

I read across genres, depending on my mood…but probably 60%
of my reading is contemporary romance. Because who doesn’t love a boy-meets-girl
    story?

What is your favorite character from fiction (not including your
    own characters)?

So many! But Samantha Jellicoe, from the Suzanne Enoch ‘Billionaires’
series is right up there at the top. She’s feisty, spunky and just a little bit
broken, but she also has a code and she lives by it. Love that!

Do you enjoy films and/or TV shows? Which are your favorites?

Yes, to both! A few of my faves are NCIS, Revenge, any chic-flick
film …and I love the Romancing the Stone movies from the 80s. They’re a little clichéd
and some of the acting is silly…but they’re still so good!

What are you working on at the moment, and what are we likely to see from you in the coming months?

I have 2 more rocker books, coming out in a few months with Harlequin
E and I just put the finishing touches on my very first SuperRomance from Harlequin,
which should be out in early 2015. So I’m in a little bit of editing/revisioning
limbo, but in my spare time (HA!!) I’m working on another contemporary about a cowboy
and a masseuse that I’m having so much fun with!

Please tell us about your latest book.

Light My Fire is a friends-to-lovers/brother’s best friend book
set in the glamorous Hollywood world. Lily is desperate
to change her image, and she’s had a mad crush on Nate, her brother’s best friend
and a rock star, for years. She thinks he’s the ticket…but she doesn’t count on
    falling for him…

Lily MacIntyre needs to shed her sitcom teen-queen image if she’s going to carve out a real career in Hollywood. A tabloid-worthy fling with rocker Nate Lansford—her childhood friend and new cohost of a reality talent show—should do it. As long as she can accept that the notorious player will be moving on to the next eager conquest when the season wraps. Long before Nate’s hard-hearted image took hold, he and Lily were each other’s protectors and allies. No one knows him the way she does—and he doesn’t want his messed-up past to muddy up her potential. For once, the bad boy is trying to be good. Not easy when the good girl is getting wicked with him in the back of his limo, and every white-hot kiss proves they can never be “just friends” again…

    Kristina Knight

Once upon a time, Kristina Knight spent her days running from
car crash to fire to meetings with local police–no, she wasn’t a troublemaker,
she was a journalist. Her career took her all over the United States, writing about everything
from a serial killer’s capture to the National Finals Rodeo. Along the way she found
her very own Knight in Shining Cowboy Boots and an abiding love for romance novels.
And just like the characters from her favorite books, she’s living her own happily
ever after.Kristina writes sassy contemporary romance novels; her books
