Note that Raul has two personnas–the one before he realizes what an empty life he’s been leading, and the one after he falls in love for the first time ever. So if it’s pre-Veronica Raul, he’ll call his dealers to find out where the latest party is–they’ll bring the blow, he’ll get his pick of celebrity whores, and a good time will be had by all.
If it’s the Raul who is in love with Veronica, he’ll choose to spend every minute he can with her–or in the outdoors, enjoying fishing, running, and hiking in the woods.
What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?
Old Raul would rather do snort cocaine and drink to excess than eat.
New Raul craves Gram-Marie’s soups and homemade bread, as well as Veronica’s pies.
Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.
Old Raul wears anything off the floor that passes the “sniff” test.
New Raul cares about what he looks like, to please Veronica.
Does he know how to fix things?
Old Raul–nope.
New Raul–as long as it involves something he’s learned from Veronica, he can do it–like fixing fishing lures, poles, and canoes/oars.
He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.
Old Raul tried to kiss Veronica when he first met her. He assumed she’d be thrilled to be kissed, maybe screwed, by a celebrity like him. She dodges his kiss and his face hits the wall. He tells her he thought that’s why she brought him outside-away from her beloved grandmother, who he then insults. She slaps his face for insulting her grandma. He retaliates by calling her fat and plain. She laughs, then tells him what she really thinks about him–about all of the venereal diseases she’s sure he must have from being such a man-whore, and how he’s smart to hold off on doing porn until his looks fade, which they will soon, at the rate he’s destroying himself with drugs and alcohol. He’s vaguely insulted.
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
Old Raul would ignore them.
New Raul can’t wait to have a family of his own to belong to, so he’d study them.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
Old Raul is hung-over.
New Raul can’t wait to get out into the sunshine to enjoy a new day.
Does he drink coffee? If so, how does he take it? If not, what does he drink instead?
Both Raul’s drink lots of black coffee.
What apps would he have on his phone?
Old Raul doesn’t play with his phone. He only uses it to find his dealers and where the next party is.
New Raul uses it only to keep in touch with Veronica.
Beard or clean-shaven?
Old Raul is clean-shaven, to keep his movie-star image bright.
New Raul likes to look scruffy, since Veronica likes him that way.
Earrings/piercings/tattoos or unadorned skin?
Both Rauls have unadorned skin–less to hide during his frequent nude scenes in the crappy rom-coms and action movies he’s usually cast in.
Personal vehicle or public transport?
Old Raul needs a driver, because he’s frequently too buzzed to drive.
New Raul is a careful driver.

Old Raul wouldn’t care.
New Raul communes with nature, so he’d recycle.

He runs a successful private investigation company, so he rarely has time to be bored. When he does have time, he kicks back with a beer and watches a game on TV. He’s not much for going out at night—too many crowds and loud music. Too much chance to get embroiled in trouble, which seems to find him.
What kind of food would he impulse buy if hungry?
Pizza. He loves it but has a tendency to order it too frequently. That means extra miles to run.
Describe the kind of clothes he prefers to wear.
He wears a suit to work even though it’s a fitness center and most of the staff dresses casually. When he’s not working, sweatpants and a tee mean it’s downtime.
Does he know how to fix things?
Yes. He’s been a bachelor a long time and doesn’t like to pay for things he can do himself, so he’s learned how to do lots of stuff. The Internet is a great thing!
He tried to do something and it went badly. Tell us about it.
When he first lived on his own, he tried to help his sister wire a new stereo and somehow knocked out the lights to the whole house. After cursing a bit, he called an electrician. It was an expensive mistake but made him determined to learn about wiring.
In this book, he is undercover, disguised as a gay man because that’s the only male employee Susan Baer would hire. He played his part so well she didn’t believe him when he tried to come clean and admit his love. That’s a backfire that set him on his heels!
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
He likes kids in general. In specific instances, he’s happy to be able to hand them back to their parents and walk away. Mostly, he’s funny and genial, but doesn’t go out of his way to be around children.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
Ready to go. He says he sleeps the sleep of the pure—HA! But he’s a good morning person.

He wants to show Mia what his abuela’s tamales are like, so he asks his mom for the recipe. Even though he’s decent in the kitchen, the tamales are a little beyond his grasp. They are good, but not like his mom’s or abuela’s. He has a good sense of humor about it, though, and vows to take lessons with his mom the next time they’re on a break from a tour.
How does he act around children he doesn’t know?
He’s good with kids. His even demeanor and knowledge of psychology come in handy.
What is he like first thing in the morning?
Pretty much like he is throughout the day. Even keeled and polished.

Yes. He picked it up on his travels with his parents at a very young age.

He takes his coffee black, but limits it to two cups, for the most part.

What research did you do on MC culture?
I grew up around bikers. In my regular job I had a lot of members from other clubs as clients. I knew what questions I was allowed to ask and used my imagination for the rest.
What level of violence do you depict, and why?
Assault to murder. It’s necessary for the plot.
Describe the place where the club meets, and where it’s located.
Their clubhouse which is an old meat packing building. It’s located in Indio California.
What made you choose that location?
I’m familiar with the area.
Which member is the leader of the club?
Big Ant Lozano, but his son Enzo took over for a while.
Who’s the mechanic or fixer in the group?
Anything outside what the brothers can fix on their own. Ant Lozano owns a garage that handles the clubs’ bikes.
Which member is most likely to “bail out” or “cover” for another?
Only table members (high rankers) have the authority to bail a brother out. The club as a whole is required to cover for each other.

I’m a doctor and most of the time I’m in scrubs.
Ever required to wear something you don’t like? Tell us about it.
I avoid formal occasions like the plague. I hate suits and ties. Not my thing. I’m more comfortable in a leather jacket, jeans and biker boots.
What kind of shoes or boots do you wear?
Redwings
When others see you what is their first impression?
Depends on where they see me. At the hospital, people are surprised by my ink. When I’m out and about in my normal gear and they hear me referred to as Doc, people do a double take. I look more like a biker.
What do you wear to sleep?
Nothing. If I’m alone I want to feel the cool sheets. If I have my lady with me I want to feel every inch of her pressed against me.
Tell us what your author wears when writing about you.
My writer lady wears leggings, tank tops with oversized shirts, and fuzzy slippers.
If your author has a pet, is the pet ever dressed in clothing?
She has this fluffy ball of fur that’s about 15 pounds and in the winter she dresses him in a coat. When the temps drop below zero she has a pair of plaid long johns for him. I laugh my ass off when she puts those on him.

I am a tall woman. At about 5’8″, I usually tower over those around me. I love wearing my naturally coily black hair, so it frames my oval face and brushes the top of my shoulder. It takes a lot of work to keep them springy, but Mateo likes it that way. So, I make sure my coils are in all their glory when he’s around. Did I just write that? Yeah, I did.
I’m not supposed to be so into my husbands’ older brother, but Javier has been gone a long time. His death tore all of us up. Mateo and I clung to each other, and now, I’m feeling … things. Where was I?
Oh, yeah. I have dark brown skin, which I keep moisturized with my own combination of cocoa and shea butter I mix myself. Winters in Buffalo can be brutal on my skin, and a girl doesn’t want to run around looking ashy.
Please tell us a little about yourself.
Let’s see. I am in my early forties and the mother of a great teenage son, even though he has been a real pain in the butt lately. When I am not hacking away at my laptop for work, I use the rest of my time and energy trying to keep Benito in line. He has been a handful since Javier died. I love him so much, though. So, I let my son live.
I work from home, which makes me a major homebody. That’s all right because the pandemic has everyone locked down at home most of the time anyway. My life hasn’t changed much. I still work and socialize over Wi-Fi, laughing, crying and arguing with friends and family through face time and direct messages.
Who is the significant other in your life?
As weird as it is for me to think, my brother-in-law, Mateo is an “other” and incredibly significant. He moved to Buffalo to help me with Benito. Over the past few years, he became the father figure in my son’s life and slipped into co-parenting him with me. I trust him with so much, more than anyone else in my life.
If you haven’t made a bucket list before, perhaps now would be a good time. Who knows? It might inspire another book. While you’re at it, how about telling us about some of your other favorite things? Here are the questions.
What is your birth order?
I am an only child.
Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.
When I was a kid, I had one of those Speak and Spell toys. I begged my parents for weeks for one. It was my gateway to writing, and I have been a keyboard geek ever since.
Describe your favorite food and how it’s prepared.
My favorite food is anything someone else cooks for me. The way it is prepared is by me sitting my plump bottom on the sofa, watching TV.
Tell us about your best friend.
I am not the best friend type of person. I love me some me, though. So, I guess I am my own best friend.
What are two places you would like to visit before you die, and why?
Hmm … Well, there is one place I would like to visit, but I know I never can, unless I convert. I always wanted to go to the city of Mecca. My cousin, Brandon is Muslim. He showed me pictures of when he went on a pilgrimage there. It was so beautiful, but only Muslims are allowed in the city.
I would also like to go to Peru. My Zumba instructor, Maritza is from there.
Where is a place you would never like to return to, and why?
I could live without going to France again. Javier took me to Paris for our honeymoon. I do not understand all the hype about that city.
Who is someone you would like to meet, and why?
I want to meet Michelle Obama’s stylist. For real, the woman never looks bad. I want to get tips and tricks from the person who makes the former first lady stomp around awesome, all day, every day.
Who is someone you would like to avoid, and why?
I try my best to avoid Benito’s girlfriend, Amanda’s parents. Amanda is sweet enough, but I can’t stand her parents. I had arranged for us to meet at a restaurant for dinner. Her father had the nerve to wear one of those red hats. It was obvious to me that he wanted to send a message, and I got it loud and clear. So, I steer clear of them.
If you could time travel to any date, what would it be, and what would you do there?
I am happy in my own time. I am not interested in going back and fiddling around with the past. The future is full of unknowns, which is scary as hell. I do not want to go there either, only to find out the people I love are all dead or something.

What was your biggest challenge in writing this book?
A Stroke at Midnight is my first venture into the BDMS romance subgenre. I want to explore and incorporate a range of sexual proclivities and fetishes for my characters and bring them to readers.
I was nervous about drafting love scenes with BDSM elements. Things can go wrong quickly, turning a scene meant to be sensual and titillating into something gross. It takes finesse.
Why did you choose this character for the interview today?
One of the challenges about short stories is that readers don’t get a lot of detail about the characters. Authors must give enough to make characters interesting and drive the plot, and nothing more, which means leaving out a lot of background. I wanted readers to get to know more about Deja. I had to keep so much of her awesomeness out of the book.
Are any sequels planned for this book?
No. A Stroke at Midnight is a standalone book. Readers have asked for a follow-up. You never know.
What genre(s) would you like to write that you haven’t tried yet?
None. I am a romance writer. I would like to write in romance subgenres. I have a few paranormal romances, and I want to write a sci-fi romance so badly. I am simply scared of all the world-building. I may hunker down and do it one day, but I have to find the time before I can write any time travel.
Why should readers who haven’t picked up one of your books before give this one a try?
Many readers find my books to be divergent from a lot of stories in the romance genre. I craft diverse characters in stories that challenge the standard type of love stories that center on finite races and backgrounds.
