    Character Interview Mira-nell from Wayfarer’s Road @jfbowdancer #RLFblog #Fantasy

    The Wayfarer’s Road

    Interview with Mira-nell

    Tell us about yourself, please.

I am Mira-nell and am almost four summers old though Mother says I am threee. I travel with her on the Wayfarer’s Road. Folk think I’m strange, but I know more than most.

What is it that you want, but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.

I want to stop wandering. I long for a family and children to play with.

What’s your internal limitation? Meaning, what is it about you that makes it so you cannot do what it is you need to do during this story?

I am too small! My mother wants me to learn her bowdancer ways but there is too much of the world to explore. I just do not want to do it always from the Wayfarer’s Road. Cannot interesting folk come to us?

What inner doubt causes you the most difficulty?

I wonder if I will grow old on this road and be as lonely as my mother is. She does not tell me her heart hurts, but I see it.

What’s your external complication? In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.

There are mean folk on this road. Mother thinks I am too young to understand, but I know how they look at me and at her. I am afraid that one day she will be gone and I will be alone on this road.

Tell us about your significant other, that person who makes living worthwhile.

My mother, Jan-nell, loves me most, but we have met a magical bardsinger on this road who tells the best stories. But he is not as grown up as mother and me.

What would that person say about you?

Mother says I am quick-witted and so does Khrin, the bardsinger. He makes me laugh.

    What is your family like?

There has only been Mother and me. Khrin says we are family but Mother says we are not. I do not understand that. But I would like to live with Khrin. He cannot keep me as safe as Mother does, but he tries.

What special skills do you rely on?

Mother has taught me much about wild foods on the Wayfarer’s Road. I observe what herbs she uses to heal people in the towns and farms and to help new mothers bring babes into the world. I have not seen a birth yet, but I have heard many. I think people show who they are and what they intend, not by words but by the look of their eyes or the way they move.

If someone from your past showed up, who would you NOT want it to be, and why?

Mother tells me good things about my father—how quick-witted he was and that is why I am so. She tries not to tell me bad things, but I overheard her speak to Khrin about him. I would not wish to meet him on the Wayfarer’s Road. I do not think he is a good man.

Are you happy with the way your story ended? Why or why not?

I am gloriously happy. But folks will have to find out for themselves.

You have the length of a tweet (140 characters) to describe yourself as a writer. Let’s see what you can do.

I come from a long line of liars and storytellers, and I have an avid curiosity. I collect odd facts and experiences and tie them together in intuitive leaps with words.

    Why do you write?

I’m a retired freelance journalist. I made a living by writing other people’s stories. I felt it was time to write my own—and not stories about me, but stories from my imagination.

What do you want to write next?

I am currently writing, Legacy, the last book of the Ruins Trilogy, my archaeology romance thriller set. Then I have a paranormal series I want to write about a Tennessee herb woman who goes to North Dakota to battle unusual beasties.

Are any sequels planned for this book?

The Wayfarer’s Road, where Mira-nell first appears, is the second book in The Bowdancer Saga. The first three books (The Bowdancer, The Wayfarer’s Road, and Warrior Women) are being re-issued by my publisher, MuseItUp Publishing, to join The Lost Song Trilogy, books 4-6 of the series. They will all be under one roof this summer. Later, I plan on three more books—one that continues Jan-nell’s life and one each for her children. (Yes, I did say children.) The entire Bowdancer Saga follows Jan-nell’s life from her village on the plains and out into the wide world as she searches for meaning and belonging.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?

I appreciate every person who has read (and those especially who have reviewed my books). An author will write because she (or he) must. But those stories might as well be hidden in a cave in some dark corner of the earth if they are not discovered and read. Only then do they come alive.

    About the Author

Janie Franz comes from a long line of liars and storytellers with roots deep in east Tennessee. Honed by the frigid Northern Plains and the high desert of New Mexico, as well as a degree in anthropology, her writing skill and curiosity generated thousands of feature and cover articles over a vast range of topics for numerous regional, national, and international publications.

She co-wrote two books with Texas wedding DJ, Bill Cox (The Ultimate Wedding Ceremony Book and The Ultimate Wedding Reception Book), and self-published a writing manual, Freelance Writing: It’s a Business, Stupid!

She is a professional speaker and occasionally reviews books, CDs, and concerts. Previously, she ran her own online music publication, Refrain Magazine, and was an agent/publicist for a groove/funk band, a radio announcer, and a yoga/relaxation instructor.

The fifth book of her Bowdancer Saga, Refrain (the second book in The Lost Song Trilogy), was a Top Ten Finisher for Best Science-Fiction and Fantasy Novel in the Preditors and Editors Readers Poll 2013.

Healer Jan-nell and her precocious daughter meet a handsome wandering
bard, carrying secrets and the hope of belonging.
The Bowdancer Saga continues in The Wayfarer’s Road. Healer Jan-nell,
now a woman traveling alone with her precocious young daughter on the Wayfarer’s
Road, meets a handsome wandering bard. But he is carrying his own secrets along
with the priceless chance at hope for her and her child to belong.

    Excerpt

The stranger stepped a bit further
into the room and pulled back the wet hood of her sodden, brown cloak, revealing
a delicate, fair face. A thick chestnut braid curved across one suede-covered shoulder
    like a docile snake.
    “It is the changing moon,”
her soft voice answered. She untied the laces of her cloak and pulled the cloth
free from her other shoulder, revealing the black curls of a child of three summers
against her thigh-length tunic. The girl’s little arms wrapped protectively around
    the woman’s brown leggings.
The traveler shook the water from
her cloak and asked, “Might I have a dry bed, sir?”
    The innkeeper’s eyes narrowed.
“We be not offering beds to women alone. This be a respectable place.”
“I am not alone,” the woman
answered, smoothing the child’s curls from off her face. “Would you deny a
    child a dry blanket?”
    The innkeeper frowned. “Good
woman, if that indeed be what you are, it is not seemly to be housed here without
    your man.”
    “I take care of myself,”
she said and struck her great staff against the floor for emphasis, ignoring the
    customers’ mumbled responses.

    Reviews
“There are few things more pleasant, after doing battle
with the real world, than to sit down in the company of a talented storyteller and
allow yourself to be carried away into another world. Janie Franz’s rustic tale,
“The Wayfarer’s Road,” book #2 of the Bowdancer Saga, does just that.
There is great comfort immersing yourself in a mystical world not your own, and
Ms. Franz is an excellent guide. The tale of the bowdancer Jan-nell, her precocious
daughter, Mira-nell, and the mysterious troubadour Khrin, draws the reader in and
holds him/her closely until the end. I look forward to the next in the series.”—
Doren Grey, author of the Dick Hardesty mystery series and the new paranormal Elliott
    Smith mystery series.
“Set amid a clash of cultures and gender, Janie Franz paints
an enchanting story of creating alternative families. When three outcasts – a woman
warrior, her precocious daughter, and a gay troubadour – are inexorably drawn together
to escape the brutality of men on the Wayfarer’s road, a journey begins that will
sweep the reader along with them. These memorable characters and their passage to
something beyond themselves will stay with you a long time.” — Alan Chin, author
of Island Song and The Lonely War.
“A charming tale of love and acceptance. The Wayfarer’s
Road reminds us that the things we seek are sometimes found in the unlikeliest of
places.” – Stuart Clark, author of Project U.L.F and Project U.L.F: Reacquisition.
“There is richness to this story. The richness of the tale
is evident in the author’s detailed plant knowledge which is effectively displayed
in almost every major scene in the story. The richness of the tale is evident in
the emotional journey of Jan-nelle and Khrin as they find that dream of happiness
and home that everyone wants in life and they both want for Mira-nell. It is a rich
tale that I found satisfying and I think you will too.” — Justine, Ebookaddictreviews.com
    Janie Franz
    “Fully enamored with The
    Bowdancer
, the first book of this saga, I looked forward to reviewing The Wayfarer’s
Road with great anticipation. Once more, author Janie Franz did not disappoint.
Not in the least. Her writing, characters and plot are exquisite…..While Jan-nell,
Mira-nell and Khrin couldn’t be more different, they complement each other well
and, in a short span of time, they learn they are not so different after all. Aside
from a life deeply rooted in song (but for young Mira-nell whose only interest to
learn is on an as-needed basis), each is misunderstood, longs for belonging, and
    only cautiously trusts the other.
With childhood innocence, curiosity and honesty that cuts to
the quick of social construct, young Mira-nell is instrumental in teaching Jan-nell
and Khrin to question the comfort of their ingrained perceptions, including those
of sexual orientation…..Khrin’s intentions and Jan-nell’s ponderance of their possibility
reveals that one must honestly assess inner desire and realize that there are no
rules of engagement but for those imposed upon us. If the interaction between these
complex characters seems eerily confusing, the author is simply asking us, in a
not-so-subtle way, to challenge the comfort of our own limiting assumptions.”
Kim Clune, The Pagan and the Pen Book Reviews
“Though this is a short novel, it is packed with adventure,
suspense, and even romance. Janie Franz has created a society that could be anywhere
and any time in a society before technology. She delineates the character of her
main characters, digging deep into their own pasts to give us a true picture of
each person. Away from her village, Jan-nell is a different person and I enjoyed
meeting this new one who is a mother and must scrounge for food at times. She is
feisty, but she can take care of herself too…. What I liked most about this book
is the relationship between Jan-nell and Khrin. As they gradually become friendlier
and friendlier the two of them get into giant scrapes, but as they travel The Wayfarer’s
Road they get closer and closer to their own goals. And as the story unfolds there
is no way to know what the ending will be. I just enjoyed traveling the road with
Jan-nell, Khrin, and Mira-nell. After reading this I feel like I truly know these
people. With a straightforward yet slightly old fashioned way of writing and vocabulary,
this book speeds along in the world that Janie Franz has created in The Bowdancer
Saga. If you are looking for a way to escape from the modern world where you are
constantly connected, reading The Wayfarer’s Road will bring you to a time when
traveling was fraught with danger and communication required face to face interaction.”
Barbara Ehrentreu, Barbara’s Meanderings, author of If I Could Be Like Jennifer
    Taylor.

    Interview with Joe Stanton

    Tell us about yourself, please.
    My name is Joe Stanton
and I am a 28-year-old Episcopal Priest. I am in love with a beautiful woman named
    Ella Tollefson.
What is it that you want, but cannot have? Authors call this
    the conflict of the story.
    I began suffering
from severe hallucinations a few days ago. I want to figure out what’s causing them
    and make them stop.
What’s your internal limitation? Meaning, what is it about
you that makes it so you cannot do what it is you need to do during this story?
My internal limitation is lack of understanding.
I’m only just beginning to unravel the cause of the sudden hallucinations and the
    deeper mystery behind them.
What inner doubt causes you the most difficulty? I fear for Ella’s safety. I fear that I’m endangering
the person I love most in the world.
What’s your external complication? In the story world your
author created, explain what it is you fear most.
I fear the loss of all that I love and hold dear.
Tell us about your significant other, that person who makes
    living worthwhile.
    Ella Tollefson is
a beautiful young woman whom I met in the wilderness—in Olympic National Park in
Washington State. Ella is sweet, kind, funny, athletic
and intelligent. She’s a registered nurse, working to become a nurse anesthetist.
I love her more than anyone I’ve ever met. I’m crazy about her.
What would that person say about you? She loves me. She likes my weird sense of humor.
We laugh a lot when we’re together. I’m sure I get on her nerves sometimes but she
    is amazingly patient.
What is your family like? I’m an only child and my folks live on the East Coast. They’ve come to visit
me a couple of times out here in Western Washington.
We get along great. They’re proud of my achievements and the spiritual vocation
    I’ve selected.
What special skills do you rely on? Intuition. Faith. I’m a skeptic, and my church
is super progressive, but I do believe in a higher power.
If someone from your past showed up, who would you NOT want
    it to be, and why?
    An old girlfriend.
Ella might not be too happy about that.
Are you happy with the way your story ended? Why or why not?
Yes, very. Readers keep asking about
a sequel, and that makes me happy.

    Interview with Link Jacks

    Tell us about yourself,
    please.
    I used
to be a pretty normal guy. I grew up middle class, raised by two music teachers.
I had a talent for music so I got a partial scholarship to Julliard. Never had much
luck with girls at least not until I was discovered and joined rock band Becket.
Once the image consultants, wardrobe people and public relations advisors got their
hooks into me, well life changed. All the sudden I couldn’t keep the women away
and everyone wanted a piece of me. I’m not really the bad boy monster the press
makes me out to be, but it sells albums and keeps my name current. At least that’s
the way I used to feel before I met her, Madison.
She brought out the real me and made me strong enough to face the world as myself.
Oh, I’m also thirty years old and questioning everything.
What is it that you want,
but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.
    I want
    Madison but I want
her fully in my world. She’s determined to not disappoint her sister by hooking
up with me but I know I can get her family to see things my way. I’m not who the
all think I am, I’m the real me when she’s around. I want to wake up with her every
day of my life but she just keeps on running.
    What’s your external complication?
In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
    I know
she’s attracted to me; she even seems to care. The trouble is being with me has
practically ruined her life. She lost her job, she’s been shamed in front of everyone
she knows and the whole on-line world got to see her fucking me. The press is hassling
her, people are giving her the stink eye and I can’t get her to forgive me for something
    I didn’t really even do.
    What is your family like?
    My mom
passed away but my dad is still around. He’s actually part of the problem. He thinks
the best way for me to stay on top is to keep my name in the tabloids. He’s always
working on some scenario that will get me press, whether it be dates with supermodels
or rumors of trashed hotel rooms and drug addictions.
    What special skills do
    you rely on?
    I am
an incredible pianist and guitar player. I can really sing although I usually only
sing back up. I love building small models and like to think I can teach anyone
how to play an instrument – heck, I wanted to be a music teacher when I was growing
up. I also have a head for business – I sure don’t want to be hopping around on
stage in my fifties so I have diversified.

    About the Writer

    Why did you choose to
    write about this character?
He seemed like such a loveable, misunderstood bad boy and he
made my pulse quicken just thinking about him.
    Was there anything you
discovered about this character that was a surprise to you?
When I started writing about Link I didn’t expect him to be so
smart. I was originally going with musical prodigy with a make over. He came into
his own and proved to be a truly kind person, motivated business man and stand up
    guy.
What do you want to write
    next?
I am finishing up a third book right now. It is a bit of a romantic
mystery that I hope will give readers a sexy love story and a who dunnit all at
    the same time.
    What other character from
this book do you want to write about? Care to tell us why?
I have already begun writing about the female protagonist’s best
friend, Darling Roberts. Link will also feature in the book as he really wants to
see his friend find love, even if that means a little manipulation!

    Author Bio

    T.D.
Hassett grew up reading the romance greats–Jackie Collins, Julie Garwood, and Judith
McNaught. She was certain that life should be like a romance novel, with lots of
passion, some incredible adventures, and a guaranteed happily ever after. She attended
college in New England, earning a B.A. in History
and an M.S. in Clinical Psychology before changing her mind again and studying education.
Currently Ms. Hassett lives in Connecticut
with her very patient husband and two young children. Her rambunctious family shares
their home with three crazy cats and a darling golden retriever named Delilah. Her
eccentric relatives and their quest to make her feel like the only normal nut in
the family tree inspire her writing.

    About the Character

    Name: Landon Wadden
    Age: 515
    Gender: Male
    Birthplace: New York
    Profession: Alpha
    Ethnicity/Species (if not human): Werewolf
Describe his/her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include
any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars:
His crystalline blue eyes, brown hair styled in a military-style
crew cut, and he wore a short-sleeved polo shirt revealing the tribal tattoo that
covered the length of his right arm.
    Who is the significant
    other in your character’s life?
    Jocelyn, an Elemental.
    What are the qualities
of his voice? (pitch, quality, volume)
He has a deep, rich voice, and has tendency to yell when he’s
    angry.
    Does he scrape by, live
    comfortably, live extravagantly?
He lives extravagantly and has the means as alpha werewolf.
What does he have a knack
    for doing?
He has an knack for pissing off his fated female.
    Is he close to family?
He’s close to his sister, Olivia. She’s more than a century old,
but he’s very protective of her and often treats her like she’s still a child.
    What is your character’s
biggest need at the beginning of the story?
    His fated female.
    What is your hero’s
    biggest hopes and dreams?
He hopes for a world where he can claim his fated, a world
where he could claim his fated, the woman granted for him despite their breed. “Her
soft lips against his made him want to create the perfect world where they could
    live together regardless of breed.”
    What is your hero’s biggest
    personal flaw?
    His temper.

    Interview with Landon Wadden

    Do you believe in love
    at first sight?
I suppose most immortals believe in it. Immortal men have the
ability to recognize the woman fated for them. It’s a gift, a cosmic gift destiny
grants us during the span of our long lives. We wait and wait until we are granted
    this woman, this precious gift.
    Sounds like you’ve met
    her?
(His eyes sparked yellow and he growled.) Is there a question
    in there somewhere?
    Yes, Landon. Have you
    met your fated female?
(At immortal speed, he stood and shoved his fists in his pockets.)
    That’s none of your business!
    Are you often quick to
    temper?
No… yes… It depends. (He sits then shoves his fingers through
his hair in frustration.) I have been quick to temper lately.
    Why is that?
    Because…Because there’s something I want that I can’t have.
    And what is that?
I want my gift. She’s mine. It’s not fair I can’t have her.
Why do you think you can’t
    have her?
(He sighs heavily, and looks away from as if lost in a memory.)
Because… she’s not of my breed, which means she can’t grant me an heir, an alpha
    like myself.

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

    Why do you think your
writer chose to write about you?
Because I’m burdened with the knowledge my fated could never
    be mine.
    What do you wish your
writer had not told others about you?
    Don’t mind.
    What do you wish your
    writer would write next?
She’ll continue the series, the love stories of the Elementals
    and their mates.
    What other character from
your book do you think your writer should write a book about? Care to tell us why?
My sister, Olivia. I’d like to see her settled down with a good
    man, a werewolf.

Character Interview: Corporal Nicholas ‘Saint’ Santiago @ovalleba #RLFblog #contemporary

    A Saint’s Salvation

    About the Book

    Title A Saint’s Salvation
    Genre Contemporary Romance
    Author Beverly Ovalle

Interview with ‘Saint’, Corporal Nicholas Santiago

    Tell us about yourself,
    please.
I’m Saint, at least that’s what my buddies call me. My family
calls me Nick or Nico, depending on who it is. I’m having a bit of trouble remembering
who I am. I’ve seen too much of war. I’m a lovable kind of guy, hot, funny and irresistible.
I love to prank my buddies and I’m loyal. I live the Marine motto Semper fidelis.
There is one thing, one person I want that I cannot have.
What is it that you want,
but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.
I want Doc, but she rebuffs my every move and won’t answer my
letters and IM’s. For god’s sakes I leaped in front of a grenade to save her life!
    What’s your internal limitation?
Meaning, what is it about you that makes it so you cannot do what it is you need
    to do during this story?
Ah, I cannot make my angel love me. Everyone else yes, but not
    her.
    What inner doubt causes
    you the most difficulty?
I have to wonder what is wrong with me. My high school sweetheart
dumped me and my angel isn’t interested. I know I’ve changed and I want to recapture
who I was. I’ve seen too much and need to find my feet again.
    What’s your external complication?
In the story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
I fear not being able to feel joy again. I’m afraid I’ll always
be trapped in the darkness of the world I’ve seen.
    Tell us about your significant
other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
That would be my angel, Doc. Petty Officer Jones. She made me
realize that no matter what, there is a bright side. She faced a whole change to
her world and could still see the bright side, was still finding joy in the world
    around her.
    What would that person
    say about you?
That I was aggravating. That I liked to tease her.
    What is your family like?
My family is great. They embrace and accept me, make me feel
loved and special. They help refocus my life by their acceptance. They remind me
of why I’m doing what I do.
    What special skills do
    you rely on?
The skills the Marine Corps has taught me. If I didn’t have those,
I might not have saved my angel. And my charm of course. *grins*
    If someone from your past
showed up, who would you NOT want it to be, and why?
My high school sweetheart. I’ll face her in my own time, not
    hers. She broke my heart.
    Are you happy with the
way your story ended? Why or why not?
Definitely! The saint got his angel. She is everything I want.

    About the Writer

Why did you choose to write about this character?
It was more of a catharsis, I’m not sure that I had ever planned on finishing it, as Saint has the personality of my son. He joined the Marines and I was missing my buddy, especially when he was deployed to Afghanistan. When he returned from deployment I could separate the two and it took on a life of its own.
    Why do you write?
    It makes me happy.
What do you want to write next?
I want to finish the dragon stories I’m working on.
What other character from this book do you want to write about?
Alejandro. Care to tell us why? He’s as much of a charming rogue as Saint is. I like that.
Are any sequels planned for this book?
Yes. I’ve actually started two, starring Saint’s primos (cousins) Lee and Alejandro.
Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?
I love to hear from my readers. What you enjoyed, what you didn’t. I have made changes based on feedback when I worked on my next book. I actually have one who has given me an idea for another book. But I told him I have to finish the ones I’ve started first.

    Interview with Shane

What is it that you want,
but cannot have? Authors call this the conflict of the story.
My brother. He’s been kidnapped. Adrian is the only family I have left and I’ll
do anything to get him back.
    What’s your internal limitation?
Meaning, what is it about you that makes it so you cannot do what it is you need
    to do during this story?
This situation is crazy, but that’s not surprising. Adrian and
I have had an unusual life. We come from a family of vampire hunters. To free him,
I need to seduce a vampire. That’s not really a problem. I’ve lured them before
so that I can destroy them, but I’ve never met a vampire quite like Detective Bryce
Tarunson. Before I met Bryce, all I cared about was getting Adrian back, no matter what.
    What inner doubt causes
    you the most difficulty?
For the first time in my life, I have feelings other than hatred
for a vampire. I never thought a vampire could be like Bryce. He tells me he’s one
of the good guys, but that goes against everything I know about vampires. He hasn’t
given me a reason not to trust him, though, and he has gone out of his way to help
    me get Adrian back.
    Tell us about your significant
other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
It’s so difficult. That person is Bryce. We should be enemies,
but from the moment we met I wanted him. He has strength and integrity. Even though
he’s a vampire, I want to trust him. I know I can trust him. Yeah, the sex is great,
but there’s a lot more between us than that.
    What is your family like?
    Adrian
is the only blood family I have left. Our grandparents and our parents were killed
by vampires. After they died, we went to live with our uncle, but he was killed
in the same way. Adrian and I were home schooled, mostly because a big part of our
education was the history of vampires and how to kill them.
    What special skills do
    you rely on?
I rely on everything I’ve been taught about how to track and
destroy vampires. I also have a special skill of my own. It’s more a gift than a
skill. I’m immune to mind control, so vampires can’t manipulate me in that way.
    Are you happy with the
way your story ended? Why or why not?
I’m with Bryce. He didn’t betray me, but there are still lose
    ends regarding Adrian.
The last thing I expected was to fall in love. Bryce owns a piece of my heart now
and I’m fine with it. Better than fine. I only wish things had been different for
    Adrian and for Bryce’s
friends too. They tried to help us, and they’ve paid the price for it. Bittersweet
is how I’d describe the end of my story.
    Cloak and Dagger

About You: Questions for the writer.

    When you wrote about this
character, what made you the most happy? What made you the most sad?
I was happy to see Shane learn to trust Bryce and fall in love.
They both have had their share of pain, that’s for sure. Everything they went through
in the past made me sad. They lost a lot, but together they’ve found some peace.
What do you want to write
    next?
Right now I’m working on an erotic fantasy romance set in the
same world as my Knights of the Ruby Order series. The hero and heroine are driving
each other crazy in every possible way, so it’s been a lot of fun to write so far.
    What other character from
this book do you want to write about? Care to tell us why?
When I ended this story, I had plans to give Adrian one of his own. He falls
in love with his captor. Tarun has been the villain of the entire series, but in
Fangs and Floggers, he gets to tell his side of the story.
    Is there anything you’d
like to say to your readers?
Thank you so much for reading my stories! I hope you enjoy the
Weapons of Redemption series. I truly loved writing about these guys.
