    Mandraki Magic by Joanie MacNeil

    Genre Contemporary romance – novella

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG

Is Jazzy’s first love the right man for her? When her first love arrives in the Old Town on the Greek Island of Rhodes, Jazzy’s peaceful existence is shattered. What is Finn’s real reason for being on the island?

Jazzy must sort through her confused emotions and make her own decisions. Can she trust him with her heart a second time?

Why did you write this book?

I wrote the story in the first half of 2019 as part of an anthology for my local romance writing group. The theme was ‘summer beach read’. I wanted to write something a little different to usual beach settings. None of the story elements was falling into place for me, until I decided, several months following a brief visit to Rhodes, to set my story there. Everything seem to come to life after that. There is so much to see in the Old Town, my visit was too short to cover it all.

The anthology project didn’t eventuate, and I decided to self-publish my novella. I’d love to revisit Rhodes again.

What is your favorite genre to read?

A range of romance, including romantic short stories, and Icelandic Noir

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

I’ve been reading ‘Ragnar Jónasson’s Dark Iceland series, following the journey through life and career of one of the main characters, Ari Thór, from his days as a young policeman in northern Iceland.

What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment I’m working on a novella or two. I have two novels which I’d like to complete in the coming months. They’ve been on the go for way too long.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

Later this year, I plan to republish two of my earlier novels, A Traditional Affair, and A Sense of Duty, both contemporary romances set in Scotland.

Meet Joanie MacNeil author of Desperate and Dateless @JoanieMacneil #RLFblog #contemporary romanceJoanie MacNeil, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Desperate and Dateless.

Desperate and Dateless by Joanie MacNeil

    Genre: Contemporary Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Liam has no time for romance in his busy schedule. Zoe doesn’t consider herself desperate and dateless. Nor is she interested in computer-matched dating.

When they independently receive tickets to the Desperate and Dateless ball from well-meaning associates, their lives become irretrievably entangled.

Tell us about yourself as a person.

What was your favorite childhood game?

I loved to dress up in the clothes my mum didn’t need anymore. My school friend would come to my house on a Saturday afternoon and we’d have fun dressing up, pretending we were other people. My friend’s older sister wrote a short play and we donned clothes much too big for us, and became the characters in the play.

    What is your favorite book?

I have a soft spot for the very first romance book I read. The historical romance, My Gallant Enemy by Rexanne Becnel, swept me away into another world. The story gave me the escapism I craved at the time.

    What is your favorite meal?

A healthy, filling salad with lots of leafy greens, colorful fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds and protein.

Tell us about yourself as a writer.

What made you want to be a writer?

When in primary school, I wanted to write an adventure novel like the ones I enjoyed reading. Many years later, I did begin to write, not adventure novels, but contemporary romance.

What are your favorite books for writing advice?

When I first started to write, during my lunchbreak I would trawl through the bookshop at the university where I worked, looking for that magic fix. My favorite book from that time was Writing from the Heart by Lesléa Newman. A very useful book for a new writer.

The most recent favorite is Romancing the Beat by Gwen Hayes. A fresh uncomplicated approach to story structure in romance, and helpful for new and established writers.

When you go to a convention, what kinds of things do you take along?

A notepad which will accommodate my notes for the duration of the conference plus a few pens; a copy of the program for the day, so that I know where I should be and when. I like to be organized. It’s also good to take a bottle of water, lip gloss for dry lips, and a jacket as sometimes conference rooms can be quite chilly.

What’s your best advice for a new writer?

When I began my writing career, the three Ds were often mentioned: dedication, determination and discipline. They still apply today. Get into the habit of writing regularly to develop and hone your craft.

What are your writing goals for this year?

To write at least two novellas, self-publish one or two previously published novels, and complete two other works in progress that have been hanging around for too long. If I manage to complete half of those projects, I’ll be a happy author.

Desperate and Dateless? Not Liam Reynolds. He has no time in his busy schedule to foster a romantic liaison. But when his teenage brother, Dan, surprises him with a ticket to the Desperate and Dateless Ball, Liam couldn’t resist the temptation to attend…merely to satisfy his curiosity, of course.
Desperate and Dateless? Certainly not, Zoe O’Malley declares. How dare her girlfriend send her a ticket to the Desperate and Dateless ball! No way will she go anywhere with a computer-matched date. But fate intervenes and when Liam and Zoe are drawn together over a business arrangement prior to the ball, their lives become irretrievably entangled. Can they live by their golden rule–never mix business with pleasure?

Loving Nick Again by Joanie MacNeil

    Genre: Contemporary romance

    QUICK

Do you write more than one genre? If so, what are they?…
I write only contemporary romance, ranging from sweet to sexy stories
How do you come up with ideas?…
With some stories, the idea comes first; with others, it’s a character. There have been times when I’ve had two separate stories in mind – one has no more than a hero/heroine, the other is an idea. Desperate and Dateless, for example. Though I tried to keep them separate, the idea and the characters merged into one story.
What is the single most important part of writing for you
    ?…
At this point, finishing that first draft. It gives me something tangible to work on to produce the final product, and to move on to the next project.
When did you write your first book
    ?…
    Mid to late 1990s.

    FUN

Leather or lace? Lace, but who doesn’t like the smell of leather?
Black or red? Black. It’s so easy to wear and can be brightened colourful accessories.
Satin sheets or smooth cotton? Smooth, fresh cotton.
Ocean or mountains? I love the ocean, the smell, the roll of the waves, but there are mountains that take my breath away
City life or country life? City, for convenience, though I enjoyed living in a little country village during 2007-2012. I enjoyed the peace and relaxed lifestyle, and escapism, but the long daily drive to and from work in the city eventually became too much.
Party life or evening at home? Definitely relaxing at home with a good movie or working on my latest writing project.
Dogs or cats? Cats are my favourites

I am an Australian author of contemporary romance. My novels are a mix of sweet and sexy feel-good stories, most set in Australia.
I love to travel and have visited parts of the world I never dreamed I’d see. From the UK to US; Italy, Croatia, Spain and Portugal; Tunisia, where I took a camel ride into the Sahara desert; Morocco, Paris; the Baltic Capitals, Shetland Islands, Faroe Islands; Noumea, and late in 2017, Iceland and Wales. A summary of my visit to Iceland and link to a Writing Retreat in Wales is on the news page of my website. In mid October this year, I boarded a cruise ship in Southampton, UK, calling into two ports in France; Lisbon, and Barcelona; Gibraltar, then travelling through the Greek Islands, visiting Malta and Rhodes before sailing through the Suez Canal; continuing to Singapore, disembarking on 28 November. Who would have thought that 38 days on the high seas would pass so quickly?
Home, family and friends are important to me. I have blended these elements into some of my stories.

Is It True: December Heat Wave by Joanie MacNeil @JoanieMacneil #RLFblog #ContemporaryRomanceWelcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Let’s play Is It True with today’s guest, Joanie MacNeil author of December Heat Wave, a contemporary romance. This is a game with yes and no questions. Writers can elaborate on answers as much as they choose.

December Heat Wave by Joanie MacNeil

    Genre: Contemporary Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R
Following the death of her husband, Nicolette Oliver concentrates on re-establishing her career as a dancer, though still dealing with emotional issues relating to her life with Mark. When his friend appears on her doorstep, Nicolette honors her late husband’s invitation and invites Jake to stay.
Jake Harrigan has always been attracted to Nic and sees her as untouchable, even though she is now on her own. They are opposites, their lives and expectations literally worlds apart. Drawn into a romantic interlude, the parting is difficult when Jake returns to Europe to resume his career as TV news journalist and Nic moves to Sydney to begin rehearsals for the show that will resurrect her career.
Jake returns to Australia to see Nic again and also to finalize details with his network to sail around the world making documentaries. Will Jake follow his heart and ask Nic to give up all that she’s worked for and sail away with him?

    Is it true:

    this is your first book?
No, though I wrote this book early in my career.
this book is part of a series?
    No.
you lost sleep while writing this book?
Yes, probably. I tend to lose sleep whenever I’m writing a book.
you did research for this book?
Some. I’d briefly visited the area where I set the story, though had to do a little more research for the setting.
My hero’s career as a photo journalist was inspired by watching TV news and articles I’d read.
My heroine was inspired by a dance performance I watched. I just had to write my heroine as a dancer resurrecting her career following a personal tragedy. I also based the visuals for the lead male dancer on one I’d seen in the show. Fantastic performances and I wish I still had the DVD.
some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)
All characters are human. No pets.
this book has more than one genre?
    Strictly contemporary romance
you speak more than one language?
I did learn German so long ago that I’ve forgotten most of it, and I was never a fluent speaker of the language
you grew up where you live now?
At seventeen, I left home to live in Brisbane which was over an hour away by train in those days. Living in the city meant I could walk to work in ten minutes, so much easier than the two hour plus train travel, and waiting to catch a bus home from the station, especially on cold winter nights. Then at twenty, I moved interstate and have lived in the same city since then, except for about five years where I lived in a little country town. A new experience, but again, a considerable commute each day, this time by car. I thought it ironic that I began my working career with a long daily bus and train journey and ended that career with at least two hour drive each day, and the same early mornings. Exhausting.
    you love to read?
Yes. As well as romance I love to read Icelandic Noir. I’m a fan of Ragnar Jónasson’s novels.
    you are never late?
I endeavour not to be late. I dislike being late when people are depending on me to keep an appointment on time, and vice versa.
    you love pizza?
Yes, but it doesn’t like me. I have an intolerance to all grains so pizza is a no-no for me.
    you love sushi?
I have tasted sushi in the past, some nice, some not so good. Now it is a no-no for me because of the rice. I was never a big fan of sushi anyway.
    you have a pet?
No. With one Veteran husband, three adult children and their partners, one adult stepson, and four young grandsons, who needs pets?
