Saying goodbye to the Romance Lives Forever blog #RLFblog

As of today, Dec 1, 2023, I am closing Romance Lives Forever. Why? I'm organized and efficient, but with as much as I want to do going forward, I can no longer maintain RLF. I used Triberr to amplify the blog on social media, especially Twitter. The new requirements and limits from Twitter cut exposure by a huge margin. Triberr brought 80%+ of all readers to the blog. Since it's no longer active, that cost another huge drop in traffic.

It costs a bit to run the blog, register its domain name, pay for the signup/reminder service, and it takes time to chase down people who send things last minute (or not at all). Plus I have to let authors know the service is available. Then I format the material, resize the images, upload everything, and schedule its promotion. Alas, time and money won out.

I started the blog in 2009, and went to daily posts in 2010. I've explored many ways to do all this and still find time to write and market for myself. I hired an assistant last year, but only I can write the stories in my heart. I am loath to give up, not being a quitter by nature.

    When it's Time to Quit

Last month, I heard Becca Syme (one of my mentors) say that it's time to quit when you no longer love what you do. Becca is brilliant. I took her Strengths for Writers and Write Better-Faster courses in the last 12 months. Each came with 6 months of follow up calls and targeted counseling. Changed my life in so many ways. Here's the video I'm referring to if you're curious. https://youtu.be/GRG5UeFYihE

Daily monitoring this blog is not what I love. What I love is supporting other authors, and the blog was how I did that. I will still support them but in ways that leave time for my own priorities. It took more than a year for me to decide to do this (or rather, stop doing this). I almost didn't commit to 2023, but felt guilty for quitting. It wasn't until I heard Becca's comment last month that I gave myself permission to do what I had to do. She wasn't talking about blogging, or anything even close to what I was doing. She was talking about writing in the golden age of publishing (the new era we've recently entered), and how to know what to do next (or stop doing).

The video was from Ream, which is a new subscription platform for authors. I've just launched mine. I attended an accelerator class with a handful of other authors in a small-group setting for mentorship. Wonderful support and I learned things I never expected.

Some of the Many Authors Who Made RLF a Success

Adriana Kraft, Alexa Aston, Alina K Field, Amber Daulton, Anne Kane, Brenda Sparks, Daryl Devore, Dee S Knight, Effrosyni Moschoudi, Faye Hall, Iris Blobel, J Arlene Culiner, Jami Gray, Jana Richards, Karen Cino, Kate Hill, Kris Bock, Linda O'Connor, Lisabet Sarai, Livia Quinn, NJ Walters, Seelie Kay, Tena Stetler, Tina Donahue, Veronica Scott, Vicki Batman

I'll miss the blog. It's been a part of my life during most of my career as an author. I look forward to what comes after this, and having the time and freedom to pursue the next steps.

Thank you for being part of my journey. If you'd like to support me and keep up with what I'm doing next, here's how:

Read the series: RomanticMoments by Kate Hill @katehillromance #RLFblog #shortromanceIn Kate Hill’s new vampire romance, love brought Adrian and Anna together, but a lie from a jealous enemy drove them apart.

Kate, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your series.

Through My Heart in the Romantic Moments Series

    Genre Vampire Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R/Adult

Adrian – I am a vampire whose physical ugliness intensified with my immortality. For centuries I hunted alone, disguising myself from prey, preferring illusions to brutal attacks. Others of my kind spurned me. Some tried to destroy me, and on them I unleashed my wrath. I suffered the agony of eternal loneliness, and then I met Anna.

Anna – My life was almost unbearable until a tall, black-haired stranger with fiery eyes and needle sharp teeth drank my blood and swept me into an unimaginable world. From the night we met, I gave Adrian my heart, but a lie spun by a jealous enemy drove us apart. I swore I would never give him the chance to hurt me again, but denying my love for him was harder than I thought.

Note: Through My Heart is a very short horror romance featuring vampiric love. It has a spicy heat level, violence, and a HEA. This Romantic Moments story is the perfect length for a lunch break, before bed, or any time you want a quick, romantic read.

Which book is this in the series?

Through My Heart is book 3 in the Romantic Moments series. Like all stories in the series, it can be read as a stand alone.

How many books do you plan for the series?

This is an ongoing series, and I have at least 3 more stories planned for it.

    How many books are completed?

At the time of this interview 3 books are completed.

What characters are the main stars in your series?

The characters in the series are not necessarily related. What ties them together is that they’re all short stories and have a HEA or a happy for now.

What is the overall theme in this series?

Romance with a happy ending for the main couple. No cliffhangers, at least as far as a happily ever after or a happy for now.

So far, all the stories in the series have been paranormal romance or romantic horror, but other subgenres may happen in the future!

Please list the series titles below, in any order you prefer.

    Tia of the Moon
    Caleb
    Through My Heart

What did you like best about writing this series?

I like the freedom of exploring any subgenre of romance and also writing short stories. One of my favorite things to do on a lunch break is read or listen to a story that’s short enough to finish during the break. I hate to go back to work not knowing how a story ends. I love the idea of a series written just for that purpose—a short romantic story when you need to take a break from reality.

What other books (not in this series, have you written?)

I have several indie titles available, including the Silver Hearts Series, Warrior Priest, Country Whispers, St. Augustine’s Silhouettes, and Angela’s Kiss. I also have many titles with Changeling Press, including books set in my Pandemonium Universe. Most of my books have paranormal, science fiction, or fantasy elements. Some of my Changeling Press titles are written under the pen name Saloni Quinby.

Read a Quirky Character Interview with Arturo from Sofia's Silver Bullet by Kate Hill @katehillromance #RLFblog #ParanormalRomanceIn Kate Hill’s paranormal romance Sofia’s Silver Bullet, an ex hit man and a former soldier team up for a road trip through hell on earth.

Kate, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Sofia’s Silver Bullet.

Sofia’s Silver Bullet by Kate Hill

    Genre Paranormal Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Arturo As a mortal, I was a hit man. I’m not proud of it. Since becoming a vampire, I’ve done my best to turn my life around, but violence is in my nature. When demons take over the world, I jump into the rebellion against them. Then I cross paths with a sexy young vampire with more attitude than an alpha werewolf. Like me, she’s no stranger to betrayal, but that won’t stop me from winning her heart.

Sofia Demons destroyed my world. Now I dedicate my life to the rebellion against them. I’m temporarily partnered with a gorgeous vampire from Boston who exasperates me, mostly because he’s impossible to resist. I’ve been betrayed before, but is it time to take a risk for love?

Note: Sofia’s Silver Bullet is a short paranormal age gap romance with a bad boy turned good hero, a kick-butt heroine, and a HEA.

    Interview with Arturo

Thank you for agreeing to interview with us! Our readers would like to get to know you a bit better, and perhaps read the book your author wrote about you.

What is your favorite childhood memory?

I don’t like to think or talk about my childhood, but that just makes it more intriguing to you, right? Okay, how about having pancakes on Sunday with my mother? She wasn’t around long, but looking back, I think she did the best she could with what she had. I spent a lot of years angry at her, and in lots of ways she deserved it. Nowadays I’d rather remember the pancakes than all that other stuff.

What bad habits do you struggle to overcome?

Bad habits as in I smell my shirts before I put them on or bad habits as in I spent most of my mortal life taking other people out? Violence is in my nature. I was made that way. That’s what Lucas said after he shared his blood with me. Then he said that he gave me a new life and it was my choice to make changes for the better. I’ve tried to do that. All those skills I learned as a killer I now use to help the rebel cause.

    What’s your favorite food?

Spinach pie. Oh, and there’s also nothing like good cannoli. The restaurant next to my house has cannoli that tastes like it’s straight from heaven. You know, I’m not even sure they have cannoli where the angels come from. I’ll have to ask. Sometimes I find it harder to believe that actual angels are here in our world than the fact that I have both vampire and demon blood in my veins. Go figure.

    What’s your favorite drink?

Come on. Is this a trick question or something? Blood, baby doll. Blood. I’m a vampire, remember?

    What is your biggest regret?

Seriously? Nearly my entire mortal life is a regret.

What keeps you up at night?

Everything. My kind can walk around in daylight, but things are better for us at night.

    Who always makes you smile?

Sofia. My princess. Even when we’re fighting, she always manages to bring a smile to my face. That woman is so beautiful, and I’m not just talking about how she looks, even though she’s gorgeous. She has heart. Guts. When she’s by my side, I feel like there’s nothing we can’t handle together.

If you could bring one person back to life, who would it be and why?

My mother. I have so many questions about why she did what she did. I couldn’t do anything for her back then. I was just a kid, but now—I’d try to help her. Make her listen. Lucas did what he could for her. He tried to help her, but what’s the old saying? You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.

What’s the first thing you tend to notice about a person?

The way they smell. Their scent, ya know? I have an even stronger sense of smell than other vampires. It’s a demonic trait. When Lucas changed me, he said he wasn’t sure what I’d inherit from his demons side. A keen sense of smell is one of the traits I got.

Do you feel a need to fix problems that don’t directly involve you?

Sometimes. More than I used to. It’s one of the things I worked on after I decided to turn my life around. It’s something else I learned from Lucas. He’s not your average demon, that’s for sure, and he’s a better father to me than my human father ever was. I’m proud to be Lucas’s vampiric son.

Jocelyn bares all. The Darkness Therein by Kate Hill @katehillromance #RLFblog #VampireRomanceIn Kate Hill’s vampire romance The Darkness Therein, Jocelyn swears that nothing or no one will stand between him and revenge on the creature that destroyed his life—Until he meets Charlie.

Kate, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your book.

The Darkness Therein by Kate Hill

    Genre Vampire Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R for sexual situations, strong language, and violence

Jocelyn has chased his nemesis for centuries. He swore that nothing or no one would stand between him and revenge on the creature that destroyed his life. That same rival leads Jocelyn to the one person who can reconnect him to the human race.

Art student Charlie has no idea that her family history binds her to a creature of legend–until he appears in the form of a tall, beautiful man with a thirst for revenge. The last thing she wants is to follow his orders, but if she intends to stay alive, she has no choice.

Note: The Darkness Therein was previously published. This re-edited version contains additional scenes.

Let’s bare it all and chat about what to wear

First, what is your name and how old are you?

Jocelyn Ayer. I’ve existed for six centuries, but look much as I did when I was changed. Back then, I was in my thirties.

What is the time period in which you live?

Our story takes place in the 1980s.

What is considered “appropriate” for someone of your gender to wear?

<smirks>Gender stereotypes have no place in my life. One should wear whatever one wants to. I’ve been told I’m prettier than a traditional looking man. Throughout my life, especially in my youth, that perception was more hindrance than help. I prefer classic clothing. Black is my favorite color. I suppose my taste in clothing is generally considered “appropriate” for a traditional man.

How do you feel about wearing that type of clothing?

I wear it because I think it looks good on me. I like to dress conservatively, for the most part.

Considering the role you play in society, what is expected for you to wear?

<laughs>I probably look very much like what’s expected of a vampire, minus the cape, of course.

Ever required to wear something you don’t like? Tell us about it.

In my days as a slave, I had no choice about what I wore, or didn’t wear is actually a more accurate description. My very existence was to please my master, whether in his bed or as a breeder. It’s not something I like to talk about. I hated being treated like a possession.

Do you make your own clothing?

No. I have neither the time nor the inclination for that.

Mending and laundry are chores for anyone. Do you do it or someone else?

Mending, not usually. When I’m finished fighting, my clothes are often beyond mending. I typically do my own laundry.

What determines the type of clothing you buy? (example, money, fashion, job)

My personal taste and what’s functional.

When you wear something different, who’s the first person who notices?

Charlie. Or Brett, if he’s around. He has a talent for invasive questions and comments.

Tell us your favorite thing to wear.

My fleur-de-lis necklace. It was a gift. And I love wearing my rings, except for the one that’s most precious to me. A portrait ring. A piece of my mortal life. It’s usually too painful for me to look at, you see. Too many memories attached. It was intended for a woman, as well, but it’s not what you think. She was my–<shakes head>Why am I telling you this? I don’t talk about that part of my life.

What kind of shoes or boots do you wear?

Black steel toe boots, whether I’m in casual or formal clothes. Charlie calls them “shit kickers.” Sometimes she’s coarse.

Does what you wear make you feel good, or do you dislike it?

This interview is liberating in a way. I don’t generally think about feeling good. Only about revenge. I suppose I do feel good in certain clothes. Much better than when I had no choice about what I wore or anything else in my life.

When others see you what is their first impression?

I’ve been called many things. Scarecrow. Effeminate. Beautiful. Sexy. Arrogant. No matter how others view me, most fear me.

How do you feel about that impression?

I could say that it comes with the territory of being a vampire, but it’s also a persona I’ve cultivated. People should fear me, and they should keep their distance.

What do you wear to sleep?

Sometimes casual pants. Other times nothing at all.

Ever dealt with a “wardrobe malfunction”? Depending on your era, you might need to ask your author what this means.

I asked Charlie instead. She thought it was a funny question. I, however, am not amused. No. I’ve never dealt with a wardrobe malfunction. Any humiliating overexposure was deliberate on the part of my foul master.

Does anyone help you dress (other than a lover)?

    No. Not lately.

    Have you ever worn:

    a uniform
    a costume
    a disguise
an outfit for the opposite gender
All of the above at one time or another. It’s been a long life.

What would you wear to avoid attention?

Despite my understated wardrobe, I can’t seem to avoid attention.

What do you wish you could wear?

I rather miss the cloak I had back in the thirteenth century. It was warm and durable. Some things aren’t made like they used to be.

What do you wish you didn’t have to wear?

The steel toe boots. It would be nice to not have to expect a fight at any moment, or go looking for them so I’ll be prepared for the final battle with Edrik.

Tell us what your author wears when writing about you.

Casual clothes. Pants, a T-shirt or hoodie. Unfortunately, she’s too lazy to truly appreciate fashion.<curls lip>She’s telling me that horror T-shirts are fashion, but to her vampires and the like are a novelty, not reality.

If your author has a pet, is the pet ever dressed in clothing?

No, she thinks her pets should be as comfortable as she is, although she does make her poor chiweenie dress up in a Halloween costume once a year for ten minutes or so for a mini photo session.

Same question for you. Pets in clothing, yay or nay?

<laughs>Would you like to try putting clothes on my mastiffs? Have at it, my friend, but don’t cry to me about the consequences.

Coming Soon: Warrior Priest by Kate Hill @compbeastsblog #RLFblog #ScienceFictionRomance #SciFiIn Kate Hill’s science fiction romance, Warrior Priest, will a free-spirited priestess from a new age commune find unconditional love with a warrior priest from a strict religion?
Kate, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your book.

    Warrior Priest by Kate Hill

    Genre Science Fiction Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

What happens when a warrior priest from a strict religion meets a free-spirited priestess from a new age commune?

Jade and Selena are as different as two people can be, but to facilitate an alliance between their worlds, they engage in a cultural exchange. With their galaxy in danger from a planet that wants to conquer or destroy all others, they realize the importance of their assignment, but it is difficult for a warrior priest and a nonviolent priestess to understand each other.

Selena is both attracted and appalled by his old school masculinity, and Jade is tempted to break his vow of celibacy until marriage due to his powerful desire for her. Will this unlikely pair not only find common ground, but unconditional love?

Let’s chat about what to eat

First, what is your name and how old are you?

My name is Jade, or Ari Jade, if you want to be formal. I’m thirty-four years old.

What is the time period in which you live?

It’s the modern era on my planet—I’m from Covenant—but to someone from Earth during your time, it would be the distant future.

    What is your favorite meal?

Land and Sea Delight. It’s sea greens wrapped in noodles with garden snake strips on the side. My mouth waters just thinking about it.

If any, what food do you refuse to eat?

I don’t think there’s a food invented that I’d refuse to eat. Selena always teases me about my appetite. That’s just another way we’re complete opposites. She doesn’t eat much, and she’s vegan.

When you find yourself with some type of unknown food on your plate, what do you do?

Eat it. When you nearly starve to death while trapped for weeks in an ice cave, you learn to appreciate food in a way you never imagined before.

Have you ever eaten military style rations, and if so, what was your favorite?

Yeah, I’m a warrior priest. Meat stew.

Do you skip breakfast or is eating that a must-do for you?

The only time I skip a meal is if I’m forced to or during our annual fast.

Do you keep snacks on hand, and if so, what are they?

Fruit nut mix. Jerky. Cereal bars.

Who are your favorite people to share meals with?

Selena, even though she’s vegan. Just kidding. I’ve had some really good vegan meals since meeting her. At her commune, they have a recipe for sweet potatoes that’s so good I can almost taste it now.

Tell us what your author eats or drinks while writing about you.

Kate is basically a water drinker. I’m with her there. Nothing tastes as good as water when you’re really thirsty. As for food, she has a weakness for dark chocolate and peanut butter.

If your author has a pet, what does she feed the animal?

She has dogs, a cat, and hermit crabs. The dogs eat wet and dry food, sometimes mixed with a little pumpkin. One of her dogs loves apples and celery for snacks. The other won’t touch either one. Her cat prefers cat food with turkey and won’t touch the ones with fish. The crabs? She feeds them fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, and a variety of dried crab food, calcium powder, and worm castings. Sometimes they enjoy a little popcorn, too.

Same question for you. What do you feed your pet/s?

At this time I don’t have any pets, not because I don’t like animals, but because I’m not home very often, even though that’s about to change. Since meeting Selena, a lot has changed, and I mean that in a good way.
