“I couldn’t change that I was…attracted to a guy I’d watched getting murdered on the subway.”
Amory lives a quiet life as a waiter. The Moonlight Diner is the home he found after he was kicked out and disowned by his family for no other crime than who he loves.
Amory’s life is shaken to its very foundations after a chance meeting that has Amory witness a murder–except the man who dies in Amory’s arms doesn’t stay dead.
Far from being a ghost, Soyer is very real. He pulls Amory into a world in which magic exists and wreaks havoc on the life of unsuspecting people. But within what remains of the spell that touches both their lives, Amory and Soyer may just find love.
Warning: This m/m romance contains sexual content only suitable for mature audiences. It also contains graphic depictions of violence, past experiences of homophobia experienced in adolescence, and allusions to conversion therapy.
Let’s chat about what to eat
First, what is your name and how old are you?
Hi, and thanks for having me. I’m Amory, and I’m 27.
What is your favorite meal?
Well, in the diner where I work, Dwayne, the owner, makes this baba ganoush that’s to die for. I know that’s not a meal, technically, but it should be.
Tell us about a meal or food that says “home” to you.
I guess… you know what, until not too long ago, that would have been gnocchi, but it’s lasagna now. With tiramisu for dessert.
Growing up, who was the best cook in your family?
My mom did all the cooking. I helped sometimes, and so did my sister… that’s all been such a long time ago, you know.
If you cook, what kind of food do you like to prepare?
I’m not much of a cook, not because I don’t want to, but because I’ll end up taking food home from the diner or making something quick after my shift.
How much coffee or tea do you drink?
A normal amount of coffee, I guess? Some people I serve, they have far more than I do. There is this writer for instance. He comes into the diner late at night and still has several cups of coffee while he writes.
Who are your favorite people to share meals with?
I… I’m not sure how much I can say about him, but there is someone very special to me, and I like having dinner with him. Well, dinner for me. Technically, it’s breakfast for everyone else.

Let’s chat about what to eat
First, what is your name and how old are you?
My name? You can call me Soyer. I told you I wasn’t going to talk about anything other than food, so stop asking about my age.
What is your favorite meal?
Cherry pie.
If any, what food do you refuse to eat?
I’ve been in situations, questionable situations, where I ate some unsavory stuff. When it comes down to eating things no sane person would put on the menu, you have to decide whether starvation is worse, and I’ve chosen to starve several times in my life.
Tell us about a meal or food that says “home” to you.
I’m not telling you that either, because I’m not telling you about where I come from. Stick to the topic.
When you find yourself with some type of unknown food on your plate, what do you do?
Depends on what it is and whether I want to offend whoever invited me to eat with them.
What is the worst meal you’ve ever eaten?
You know what? That’s crossing a line again, but I’ll tell you, because you won’t be able to make any sense of it. It was cherries, not for their taste, but the for the cost of tasting them.
What is the best meal you’ve ever eaten?
Cherry pie.
If you cook, what kind of food do you like to prepare?
Fine, I’ll answer this, but it’s the last one. I don’t like to share my private life with just anyone, and you are being too nosy.
Yes, I cook, and I even do it well. I like making things that take a little while, because it means getting it right takes a minimum amount of effort and skill. You’re looking like you want an example? Of course you do. Fine. The last thing I enjoyed preparing was lasagna, and I made the pasta myself, and I think that concludes this interview. Thank you for having me.
