Down at the Shore by Karen Cino

    Genre Women's Fiction Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG 17

Brooke Dascoli is in a relationship that's going nowhere. She moves into the beach house her grandmother left her at the Jersey Shore and forms a friendship with her neighbors, Flo Meadows and Jane Cummings. Flo carries around a huge secret that has haunted her since her first marriage and Jane is having a hard time dealing with a cheating husband who died shortly after their divorce. Together each woman shares their past indiscretions and future dreams, while dealing with loss, renewal and starting over.

What's in your character's pockets, backpack, or purse?

What does your character always carry?

Brooke always has her cellphone, cheater glasses, sun glasses and multiple tissue packets.

What does your character dislike carrying but has to?

Brooke hates carrying her wallet with her. That’s why she has a cell phone wallet where she can only take her debit card.

Is there an item your character carries for good luck and if so, what is it?

She always has her blue ink cross pen.

Does your character carry money and if so, in what form (cash, credit, etc.)?

Brooke never has any cash on her. She always uses her debit card for every purchase.

What does your character carry related to a job or calling?

Brooke always carries a notebook along with a blue and red pen.

What else besides pockets does the character use to carry things?

She has a waterproof tropical bag that she’ll use if she’s running to the beach or running to the store. If it were up to her, all she would carry would be her cellphone wallet.

What is one thing your character wouldn't be caught dead carrying?

She wouldn’t be caught dead carrying a crochet handbag.

Has anything in your character's pockets ever gotten them in trouble?

Yes. She always has pepper spray with her and isn’t afraid to use it.

Has anything in your character's pockets ever saved the day?

Absolutely. Her emergency five dollar bill. She had stopped late at night for a coffee and the store wouldn’t accept the debit card for a dollar twenty-five purchase.

Does your character ever carry things for other people? (like a mom with toys, etc.)

Not at all. To Brooke the smaller the bag the better it is.

If your character could buy an item to carry things in and money was no object, what would it be?

She would definitely be sporting around a Gucci tote bag.

Questions for the Character to Answer About the Author

What does your author always carry?

She always carries a notebook and pen. Especially a red pen for when she decides things are going to smoothly for me. She loves to give me drama.

What does your author dislike carrying but has to?

She totally hates having to carry her car and house key.

What does your author carry for luck?

She carries her New York Mets keychain with the key from her previous home.

How organized is your author's backpack / purse?

My author’s tote bag is amazing. She has everything organized. Her pens and highlighters are all in a pencil case. And she has her notebook in a ziplock bag.

What does your author prefer to use when it comes to items like backpacks / purses?

When she was working on my character’s story, she always traveled with her tote bag. When she wasn’t writing she would carry a small crossover bag just big enough to fit her cell phone.

If your author could buy an item to carry things in and money was no object, what would it be?

I think she would go with a Brighton canvas handbag. She loves bags that say beach.

What do you wish your author would not make you keep in your pockets?

I wish she would take the pepper spray out of my handbag. I never had to take it out but it was still annoying having to carrying it around.

What do you wish your author would allow you to keep in your pockets?

I wish she would have let me keep my pack of cigarettes. I’m not a big smoker, but when she puts me through the wringer, I wish I could reach in and have a quick smoke.

Fiction Furbaby: Meet Rochester from Dog’s Honest Truth by Neil S Plakcy @NeilPlakcy @RobsRescues #RLFblog #Pets

Semi-reformed hacker Steve Levitan and his clue-sniffing golden retriever Rochester dig up the truth about a neighbor’s murder.

Neil, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We support all furbabies, real life or fictional. We want to know all about your Fiction Furbaby, but first, please tell us about Dog’s Honest Truth.

Dog’s Honest Truth by Neil S Plakcy

    Cozy mystery

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG

There’s a new dog in town – a golden retriever named Luke, in training to be a seeing-eye dog. He and Rochester immediately bond, but there’s something odd about Luke’s human, Ben Ji. How can someone so young afford an expensive townhouse on Sarajevo Way? When Ben is shot, Steve begins to discover the lies he has been telling.

Steve’s also forced to tell the truth about his past, when he deals with a student plagiarist at Eastern College, a professor locked in the stone age, a climate activist with dangerous habits, an angry bartender—and a rifle-wielding assassin.

Will he and Rochester be able to dig up the clues to all these mysteries? Or will a deadly killer go unpunished?

Meet Rochester from Dog’s Honest Truth

    Full name: Rochester Levitan

    Nickname: Puppy

    Gender: Male

    Species: Canine, golden retriever

Physical description: eighty pounds of muscle and golden fur that flashes in the sunshine, with a square head, dark brown eyes and a muzzle that shades between black and dark brown.

Relationship to main character: beloved child

    Relationship to the villain/antagonist: None

Where this furbaby came from: When Steve’s next-door neighbor is murdered in In Dog We Trust, he and Rochester team up to find her killer.

What inspired you to create this character?

I fell deeply in love with my golden retriever, Samwise, who was my constant companion. He had adorable quirks, like putting his paw over his face to hide, shredding stuffed animals in seconds, and dragging me down the street in search of wonderful scents. I knew I had to write about him, and a cozy mystery seemed the best place to showcase a clue-sniffing dog.

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

When In Dog We Trust begins, Steve thinks his neighbor’s dog is too big, too wild and too slobbery. But Steve needs to learn how to trust and love again, and Rochester forces him to do that. By the twelfth book in the series, Steve is completely besotted.

How do other characters react to or interact with this furbaby?

Steve’s best friend Rick is the local police detective. At first he doesn’t believe that Rochester has an uncanny ability to sniff our clues. He’s just a dog, and Steve must be crazy. But eventually he agrees that Rochester has a nose for crime.

What is this furbaby’s natural habitat?

Because he was a rescue, then lost his human mom to murder in book one, Rochester is clingy. He has to know where Steve is all the time, so Steve has made special arrangements to bring Rochester to work with him every day. He’s either under the kitchen table waiting for dropped food, lounging by Steve’s desk, or sleeping on the floor beside the bed.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

Rochester is a co-detective in this amateur sleuth series. He uses his nose, his paws, and his tail to spur Steve to understand clues. He senses when someone is unhappy and comforts them, and when he’s around villains he growls or backs away.

And his big, happy personality helps balance out some of the darkness of murder.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

Rochester radiates joy and curiosity, as so many dogs do. Readers enjoy his antics and connect them to their own canine companions.

Fiction Furbaby: Meet Rochester from Dog's Honest Truth by Neil S Plakcy @NeilPlakcy @RobsRescues #RLFblog #Pets

    About Rochester

Which, if any of the pets in your writing are modeled after your own pets? In what way?

Rochester is modeled after my first golden, Samwise. And I spend hours every day researching for my books—walking my current goldens, Brody and Griffin; observing their behaviors; feeding them and playing with them. I think this close observation of doggy details adds to reader enjoyment of the books.

What do your pets do when you are writing?

Right now Brody is on the sofa, his head resting on the arm, watching me, while Griffin is splayed out on his side next to the kitchen table, where I’m writing this piece.

What’s the most unusual pet you ever had?

I was fascinated with hermit crabs when I was a teen, and kept one in a glass globe in my college dorm rooms.

Where did you find your pet?

Brody and Griffin both came from breeders we found online. In both cases we fell in love with their adorable pictures. And of course made sure that their parents were healthy.

Let's chat about what to eat.

First, what is your name and how old are you?

I'm Brooke Dascoli and I'm 50 years old.

What is the time period in which you live?

    Present time.

    What is your favorite meal?

Oh gosh! I love Caesar Salad, especially with grilled chicken and an antipasto tray.

If any, what food do you refuse to eat?

Absolutely. I will never eat lamb, octopus and salad with blue cheese dressing.

Tell us about a meal or food that says "home" to you.

You're asking me questions about my favorite subject, food. Lasagna, eggplant parmigiana and eggplant rollitini.

When you find yourself with some type of unknown food on your plate, what do you do?

    Simple. I don't eat it.

What is the worst meal you've ever eaten?

I had dinner at a client's house who added ketchup to her spaghetti sauce.

What is the best meal you've ever eaten?

I'm not a big steak eater, but I went to Peter Luger's Steak House in Brooklyn, New York and ate a steak that melted in my mouth. I've never had a steak like that ever again. I guess it's another trip to Peter Luger's.

Growing up, who was the best cook in your family?

My grandmother. She cooked old school Italian. There was always Italian bread with every meal. When she cooked, I always snuck a forkful from the pot. (The calories don't count when you're standing and picking from the pot.)

Have you ever eaten military style rations, and if so, what was your favorite?

Never ate like that. There was always a spread at my parent's and I always put out a spread.

If you cook, what kind of food do you like to prepare?

I try to keep it simple, especially in the summer. I get more creative in the winter making stews, meatloaf and chili. But in the summer it is always the quickest thing I can make on the barbecue.

Do you skip breakfast or is eating that a must-do for you?

I very really eat breakfast. I do have breakfast for dinner many nights and I can do French toast for lunch. But eating breakfast is a big no.

Do you keep snacks on hand, and if so, what are they?

I always have snacks. I keep pita chips, grapes, yogurt, almonds and yogurt covered pretzels on hand.

How much coffee or tea do you drink?

In the winter I have at least two cups of coffee in the morning. During the summer months, there are many times that I totally skip the coffee. If I do, it's usually a half of a cup.

    Favorite alcoholic beverage?

    Woo hoo! Prosecco.

    Favorite non-alcoholic beverage?

    Unsweetened ice tea with lemon.

What do you grab when there's no time for a regular meal?

A protein bar. Sometimes a piece of Italian bread with butter.

Who are your favorite people to share meals with?

My friends Flo and Jane who I met when I moved down here. We always find the time to eat together a few times a week to catch up.

Tell us what your author eats or drinks while writing about you.

My author is always with a glass of Prosecco when she writing about me. I've caught her many times had a half of sweet and low into her wine glass because it isn't sweet enough. She also likes eating cotton candy grapes.

If your author has a pet, what does she feed the animal?

She feeds her two cats Fancy Feast. But when she makes herself a turkey sandwich, she gives them a half of slice each sliced into pieces.

Same question for you. What do you feed your pet/s?

    I don't have any pets.

Daylan’s world spirals out of control as he searches for Josie. Can he break the age old curse to save her and their future, or will she be lost to him forever?

When someone dies, we say they “kicked the bucket.” Therefore, a list of things that a person wants to accomplish, places to go, situations to experience, and so on have become known as a “Bucket List.”

    Age: 35 years

    Gender: Male

    Birthplace: Martha’s Vineyard

    Profession: Blacksmith, Bladesmith

    Ethnicity: Scottish

Please provide a physical description of yourself.

I’m built like my Highland Scottish ancestors tall, bulky and muscular with bright green eyes that miss nothing, and a ruddy complexion. Jet black hair that waves around my shoulders. I keep it pulled in a ponytail while I work in my forge.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a blacksmith, bladesmith by trade. I have a forge in Martha’s Vineyard, but chose to move it to Colorado Springs due to magical interference.

The anvil, hammer and chains were passed down to me from many generations of blacksmiths in my family. As with my ancestors before me, I am able to craft ordinary items for mortals, but also daggers, swords and weapons with magic powers for witch’s or warlocks. Those of course are the most fun and the most dangerous. I vet my clientele very well.

Who is the significant other in your life?

Josie. She is a yoga instructor in my estranged sister’s studio.

If you haven’t made a bucket list before, perhaps now would be a good time. Who knows? It might inspire another book. While you’re at it, how about telling us about some of your other favorite things? Here are the questions.

    What is your birth order?

Younger Twin. Summer Dawn Rylie is the older twin.

Tell us about your favorite toy as a child.

Magic. We are a powerful family of witches. Summer mastered her magic quickly. I mastered it but seemed to run amuck every chance I got.

Describe your favorite food and how it’s prepared.

    Pizza with all the toppings.

Tell us about your best friend.

My sister was my best friend growing up…until the incident. I’ve forever been trying to reunite the family, but Summer disappeared. I just found her again. She is soon to be wed to a fantastic guy Devlin Sawyer a retired Navy SEAL. He’s now my best friend. But it was a rocky road to get there.

What are two places you would like to visit before you die, and why?

Australia – Land of several species of creatures and variety of climates and cultures.

Hawaii – Sand, surf, and a romantic setting.

Where is a place you would never like to return, and why?

I really can’t think of any place.

Who is someone you would like to meet, and why?

Kirkpatrick Macmillan. He was a Scottish blacksmith that is credited with inventing the pedal driven bicycle. Quite a feat back in 1878.

Who is someone you would like to avoid, and why?

The family of a certain vampire that I dated.

If you could time travel to any date, what would it be, and what would you do there?

January 1878 to watch Kirpatrick Macmillan create the bicycle. His craftsmanship intrigues me.

    Meet Tena Stetler

What was your biggest challenge in writing this book?

Keeping Daylan on track. He tended to go down paths that weren’t part of the story. While I am a panster by nature, some things have to come out in the story. He disagreed. I’d have to pull him back. Even at that, some of those paths did become part of the story.

Why did you choose this character for the interview today?

Dayan is a very complex creature. A screw up at the beginning to be sure, but he has a good heart. Eventually, he learns that impulse actions should be curbed until you have all the facts.

When writing the book, what did you discover about this character that surprised you?

The depth of his desire to reunite his family at any cost. He felt deeply responsible for causing the incident that divided his family and nearly took his life.

Are any sequels planned for this book?

    Possibly. Not sure yet.

What genre(s) would you like to write that you haven’t tried yet?

Cozy Mystery. I’m working on a series. There is learning curve.

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you?

I was a radio DJ for a couple years for a rock station. It was a lot of fun but the pay was lousy.

Why should readers who haven’t picked up one of your books before give this one a try?

Charm Me Again – is a character driven tale set in beauty of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The twists and turns will lead you to the curse discovery, eventually solve the mystery, and warm the cockles of your heart. Not to mention the kick-ass magic weapons he forges and wields in the story.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?

I write the paranormal romance/mystery tales for my readers. In hopes of sweeping them away from their ordinary, stressful world into a fantasy world they’ll enjoy for a few hours. I am so grateful for their support and enjoyment of my books. Thank you all so MUCH!

Tena Stetler is a best-selling author of award winning paranormal romance novels. She has an over-active imagination, which led to writing her first vampire romance as a tween to the chagrin of her mother and delight of her friends.
With the Rocky Mountains outside her window, she sits at her computer surrounded by a wide array of paranormal creatures, with a Navy SEAL or two mixed in telling their tales. Her books tell stories of magical kick-ass women and strong mystical males that dare to love them. Travel, adventure and a bit of mystery flourish in her books along with a few companion animals to round out the tales.
Colorado is her home; shared with her husband of many moons, a brilliant Chow Chow, a spoiled parrot and a forty-five-year-old box turtle. Any winter evening, you can find her curled up in front of a crackling fire with a good book, a mug of hot chocolate and a big bowl of popcorn.

Read Something Deadly on Desert Drive, the new humorous #mystery by Kris Bock @Kris_Bock #RLFblogSomething Shady at Sunshine Haven opened Kris Bock’s Accidental Detective series and introduced former war correspondent Kate Tessler, a witty journalist who solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning fifty. In Something Deadly on Desert Drive, Kate and her quirky gang of sidekicks have new problems to solve.

Kris, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Something Deadly on Desert Drive.

Something Deadly on Desert Drive by Kris Bock

    Genre: humorous mystery

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): G

After an injury disrupts her journalism career, Kate Tessler has to start over at 50, figuring out how to get work, make friends, and live in the heart of her loving but interfering family.

Now Kate’s father and his coffee group are worried. Their friend Larry married a younger woman who claims he has dementia and won’t let anyone see him. They think his wife and her lazy adult children are keeping him isolated so they can steal his money.

They’re determined to save Larry, and they need Kate’s help to prove what’s happening.

Before they can dig out the truth, a murder raises the stakes, and Kate’s father is among the suspects. To save him and Larry, she must reveal the real murderer – but her investigation could put all their lives at risk.

Why did you write this book?

As I faced fifty, I wanted to create a mystery lead dealing with some of the same issues: aging parents, concerns about financing retirement someday, and a body that doesn’t recover like it once did. I also wanted to give Kate a reason to be adventurous and fearless, thus the background as a war correspondent.

I live in New Mexico, which I love, but I set the series in a fictional city within the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. The large senior population in Arizona attracts scams and abuse—such as arguments over inheritance, or even murders to get that inheritance sooner. Is that what’s happening here? Kate has to find out.

How are readers responding to a fifty-year-old heroine amateur detective?

Early response has been fantastic! Something Shady at Sunshine Haven made Barnes & Noble’s list of “Handpicked Favorites You’ll Love” and was the Albuquerque Journal’s “Book of the Week.” Reviews have been equally enthusiastic:

“I couldn’t put it down. I loved her smart world traveler, foreign war correspondent heroine. I loved reading a story where the heroine is so fascinating, as fascinating to me as the mystery. This promises to be an exciting series and I can’t wait for the next!” – Jane Porter on BookBub

“Kris Bock is my new favorite cozy mystery writer. I loved this book so much! I so related to Kate and her struggles to get back to her regular life. Can’t wait for the next book in this series!” – Geri Krotow on BookBub

What is your favorite genre to read?

In the last couple of years, I’ve been reading a lot of paranormal historical romance, by authors such as KJ Charles, Jordan Hawk, and Allie Therin. I tend to not want to read in the genre I’m writing. I think it’s easier to read for pleasure, without analyzing the book, if it’s something I have no plans to write myself.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

In the Accidental Detective series, Something Shady at Sunshine Haven is already out and Something Deadly on Desert Drive comes out June 21! They’re followed by Someone Cruel in Coyote Creek on September 29, with more to follow in 2023.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m two books in to a five-book series about billionaire cowboys – ranching brothers who win a huge lottery and have to adjust to the positive and negative ways that changes their lives. Book one is a Christmas story scheduled for release November 8, available for preorder now.

I’m also writing a series with my brother, scriptwriter Douglas J Eboch, who wrote the original screenplay for the movie Sweet Home Alabama. These are prequel novels set when the movie characters are teenagers. We follow the crazy antics of Melanie, Jake, and their friends a decade before the events of the movie. Two books have been published, and the third is written but we don’t have a release date set yet.
