    A dead husband. An unconsummated
marriage. She needs an heir. Any man will do.
1061 AD. A sprawling empire rich in
gold, resources, and military might dominates West Africa. It’s The Kingdom of
Ghana, and it’s at the height of its power.
    Twenty-year old Nabeela is
grappling with her own power struggle. In order to save her younger sister from
their step-brother’s clutches, Nabeela agrees to marry a repulsive African
prince and bear him an heir. However, her plans are waylaid when tragedy
strikes on her wedding night—her new husband dies—without consummating their
    marriage.
She must find a replacement to
impregnate her immediately. Any man will do—including a drunken soldier her
servants find naked taking a bath in a neighboring village. Nabeela holds him
captive and coerces him into having sex with her—stealing the one thing he can
    never get back—his seed.
What she doesn’t know is the
soldier is Rafan, Commander of a warring tribe’s royal army, and one of her
family’s arch enemies. Eager for revenge, Rafan tracks her down once he’s
released. But when these two reunite, they realize their lust for each other is
    far greater than their disdain.
    Enamored by Nabeela’s beauty and
bravery, Rafan makes her an offer of marriage, and the promise to help her
become queen. He convinces her that they are stronger allies than enemies. Even
though they share a commitment to unite, there are others who are determined to
destroy them and their plans, including the one person Nabeela would have never
suspected. In the end, she’s is forced to choose between her passion and her
    ambition.

  • Character Interviews,  Fantasy

Lyerra Ahdia from The Rose Hunter by @ciaragold #RLFblog #fantasy

    Interview with Lyerra Ahdia

This interview is designed for your hero or heroine to tell
    readers about himself or herself.
    Tell us about
    yourself, please.
I was born in the human realm in 1251 AD but shortly after
taken to Alfheim Haven. I never knew my mother but the other elfin witches
whispered of her betrayal. My aunt took care of me in the beginning but fled
when madness claimed her good senses and I was sent to live at the Castle
Hamingjur where I honed my magick. Some would call me privileged in that
respect as I had the ear of the Keeper himself until he met the human who would
become his one true love. I hold no grudges and never did especially after
    meeting my own human.
    Authors call what you
want but cannot have “the conflict” — what is yours?
Ah. The conflict. I desperately needed to feel whole again
but the change toyed with my emotions and stripped me of magick at the worst
possible times. My greatest gift is the ability to heal, to absorb another’s
pain and sickness but my affliction rendered me useless to those who needed me
most. That is, it did until the human came into my life.
What can you not do (but
need to do) during this story?
I need to feel in control of my destiny. I was sent into the
human realm to redeem my family’s name. My mother had stolen the Rose of Amondeir,
and I’d been charged with its safe return to Alfheim Haven, but the change made
the journey more difficult. Toad spores. I needed my powers to see the mission
to completion, but the infernal change made me vulnerable and beholding to a
    human.
    What inner doubt
    causes you the most difficulty?
I sincerely doubt my ability to find the Rose. The jewel has
been lost to us for well over 500 human years.
The only clue I have is a Templar Knight’s tunic and a medallion my
    mother bequeathed me.
    In the story world
your author created, explain what it is you fear most and why.
Everything I’ve ever known about myself unraveled the day I
met Lucian Willshire.  An elfin witch
should feel no desire for a human and yet…what I fear most is losing who I am,
of becoming someone or something different. Unfortunately, Lucian holds the key
to seeing me overcome my ailment.
    Tell us about your
significant other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
From the very beginning, Lucian has set my world on edge. When
the change fell upon me, he alone restored my magick with just a touch. I could
not make the journey without his help and while he did so grudgingly, I
discovered that behind his sometimes gruff manner, hides a man dedicated to his
convictions, a man driven to effect change for a society bent on turning a
blind eye to the poor and destitute. He became more than a means to an end and
each day I fall more in love. Did you know? I gave up my world to be with him
    and I have no regrets.
    What would that
    person say about you?
Oh goodness. He will say I’m stubborn to a fault and
determined. I took a risk to follow him into the human realm so he’ll say I’m
no coward and yet, he’ll also say he understands my motivation, my need to help
my world thrive by returning the Rose to its rightful place.
    What is your family
    like?
They’re all witches. Well, not entirely. My extended family
includes trolls, gnomes, faeries and meddlesome pixies. I am blessed with a
    rather enchanted family.
    What special skills
    do you rely on?
All elfin witches need faery dust to levitate so while it’s
useful, it’s not my most valued skill. My most valued skill is my ability to
heal, but I can also make you see something that’s not there. A most useful
gift when trying to hide something in plain sight, wouldn’t you agree?
    If someone from your
past showed up, who would you NOT want it to be, and why?
The only enemy that comes to mind is Edward Chauss, the late
Duke of Somerton. A very nasty man who let greed get in the way of true
happiness. Did you know, he actually kidnapped me in hopes of securing
possession of Beletania’s Diary? He meant me great harm and all because with
the diary he’d have access to an endless supply of gold. No, I would not want
to see him ever again. The mere thought causes my heart to race with
trepidation. Toad spores, but let’s do talk about something more pleasant.
    Why are you happy (or
not happy) with the way your story ended?
I could not be happier. I found my soul mate and love has a
way of making insurmountable problems seem small and petty.

    About the Author

    Ciara wrote her
first “under the bed” book at twenty. Another fifteen years passed before she
bravely attempted another, but she’s been happily writing ever since. A true
Renaissance woman, when she’s not penning lively stories, she’s reading,
sewing, painting, camping, sailing or dancing. A recent empty nester, she and
her soul mate currently live on a modest plot of land surrounded by trees, a
pond, an array of wildlife and seven barn kitties. .
    What was your biggest
    challenge in writing this book?
Time. I began this story shortly after writing The Keeper of
Moon Haven. The project took well over five years to complete. Part of the
reason had to do with research and finding the answer to my own questions on
where the Rose could be hidden and why.
    Why did you choose
this character for the interview today?
Lyerra has always had a special place in my heart. Her path
wasn’t easy, but I felt she had the more interesting storyline of the two main
characters. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Lucian’s character as well, but Lyerra
is more playful, more willing to divulge secrets about herself that Lucian
    would have been.
    When writing the
book, what did you discover about this character that surprised you?
Her resilience and her ability to change and grow. She started
out as a rather shallow creature in The Keeper of Moon Haven but when she got
her own story, I discovered how much more there was to her character.
    Are any sequels
    planned for this book?
Yes. I’ve already started two in fact but again, I write
slow so who knows when I’ll have either done. The first is her parent’s story
and this will take a lot of research. I am excited about the project but don’t
expect it will go very fast. The other is set in 1878 and I’ve yet to figure
out which characters from The Rose Hunter will make an appearance. The main
character for this one is a leprechaun.
    What genre(s) would
you like to write that you haven’t tried yet?
Maybe steampunk. I’ve written fantasy paranormal, sci fi
futuristic, historical western, time travel and suspense though to be quite
honest my favorite to write are the ones with paranormal elements.
    What would your
readers be surprised to learn about you?
That I spent three years as a dental assistant before going
back for a teaching degree in art. This is my thirtieth year teaching high
    school art.
    Why should readers
who haven’t picked up one of your books before give this one a try?
The Rose Hunter is more than a romance. The Rose Hunter is a
magical journey, a fairytale for adults. Readers will be charmed by a
meddlesome pixie, intrigued by the mystery of the Rose and delighted by the
    love story that unfolds.
    Is there anything
you’d like to say to your readers?
Thank you for taking the journey with me, for allowing me to
entertain you with my wild imagination.
    Please tell us about
    your latest book.
    Lucian Willshire is
plagued by thoughts of a fey world and the disappearance of his aunt some
nineteen years past, but when his friend drags him back to Hamingjur Castle, he
stumbles into Alfheim Haven once more where mystical beings become more than a
    distant memory.
    Lyerra Ahdia is baffled
by the sudden emotional changes she’s experiencing until she discovers she’s
the only witch to suffer “the change” since her mother stole the Rose, a
special talisman with the power to perpetuate life among those in her coven.
Tasked with finding and bringing the Rose home, she begs Lucian’s help in
navigating the human realm. Against his better judgement, he agrees.
                Though
neither set out to find anything except the Rose, fate has other plans. Will
love be more elusive than hunting the Rose?

Character Sketch: Big Mike from Bad Vibes @JDFaver_Author #RLFblog #Suspense

This interview is designed to tell readers about your hero or heroine. Answer the questions as an author talking about the character.

    About the Character

Name: Michael Thomas Burke (Mike/Big Mike)
    Age: 32
    Gender: Male
    Birthplace: Maine
Profession: Federal agent on loan to ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement)
Ethnicity/Species (if not human): White male human
Describe his/her body build, skin tone, height and weight. Include any unique features such as dimples, freckles, or scars: 6’5″ muscular frame; Tanned from the sun; Mikes most startling feature are his silvery-blue eyes and his ability to appear emotionless, earning him the title> The Iceman
Who is the significant other in your character’s life?
Mike has been a complete loner, until his ICE assignment on the lower Texas coast throws him into close proximity with a petite, red-headed local deputy assigned to his team as liaison officer. Darla raises his blood pressure and his libido from the moment they meet. She rousts him in his undercover disguise as a waterfront bum, disarms him and takes him into custody, which first alerts local law enforcement that there is a federal investigation into human trafficking using the Intra-coastal Waterway.
    How does your hero dress?
Mike is known for his love of Hawaiian shirts, the louder the better. A pair of cargo shorts and flip-flops complete his outfit.
If you could only hear this character’s voice (but not see him) what characteristic would identify him?
Mike has a deep, raspy voice. He doesn’t waste words, sometimes barking out clipped orders. He’s a man’s man and not a ladies man, so he isn’t skilled at “girlfriend-speak”. Fortunately, his lady love is the only girl among seven brothers, so she can decipher his sometimes brusque verbage, and is also able to give him a smack upside his head when he needs it.
What special skills does your character rely on?
Mike is a former SEAL and is skilled in diving and underwater demolition. He is very intelligent and able to think on his feet.
What does he have a knack for doing?
Mike is a great guy, but he has a knack of pissing people off. Before long, he has Darla’s brother and one of her fellow deputies ready to throw down with him.
What is your character’s family like?
Mike’s mother abandoned him at an early age to be brought up by his grandfather, who was a carpenter. He likes to work with his hands when not blowing up drug lords in Central America. He has no living family and immerses himself into his current assignment, whatever that might be. The ICE assignment, where he has to work with the local deputy, Darla Calhoun, shakes up his usual mode of operation. He tries to protect her, which just irks the daylights out of her, since she sees herself as a completely competent member of the team.
Does this character see morality as black-and-white, or with shades of gray?
Mike has a very definite sense of right and wrong. He sees himself as the defender of the weak and the one to apprehend the bad guys. There is no try. There is do or die.
How do others perceive your character based upon looks? How true is this assumption?
Darla’s brother, Calvin, a large, powerful man himself, describes Mike as “Big Mutha’.” Darla is very attracted to him, but also doesn’t want to get hurt when he moves on to his next assignment.
What past event causes your character the most fear?
Mike most definitely has abandonment issues, which he has dealt with in the past by not becoming too attached and by being the one to move on. However, for the first time, he sees himself settling down in this Texas coastal town and taking on a family, Darla and her twin sons.
What is your hero’s biggest hopes and dreams?
At the outset, his goal is to rescue the kidnapped women and destroy the human trafficking gang. As he works with Darla, he begins to dream about nesting with her and providing for her and her sons.
What is your hero’s biggest personal flaw?
Mike has absolutely horrible communication skills when it comes to romance.
How does your character handle challenges?
Head on! Fix it! Kill it! Move forward! Accomplish the objective!
How emotionally expressive is your character to others?
<rolls eyes!> Have I mentioned how totally inept he is at expressing his emotions?

About Your Writer: Questions for your character to answer about you.

Why do you think your writer chose to write about you?
Hell if I know? I’m a man of action. I don’t have time to sit around writing pretty little stories.
What do you wish your writer had not told others about you?
She had no right to go prying into my life, especially when I found the love of my life while on assignment. I’m a very private guy.
What do you wish your writer would write next?
<snort!> I know her books about the Texas coastal area are evolving, and there are plenty of characters to write about. But, seriously. . . just write them as they happen. Chloe and Rafael have hired me to update an old Victorian house that comes with its own set of mysteries, like the skeletons I dredge up in the murky fish pond. Write about that.
What other character from your book do you think your writer should write a book about? Care to tell us why?
She’s written about my buds, Rafael, Javier and Zach, but our stories are unfolding, so I guess she should just keep telling our tales as they occur.
Is there anything you’d like to say to your writer?
Thanks for pairing me up with such a feisty and adorable love interest. <grins>

When government agent Mike “The Iceman” Burke invades her South Padre Island turf, Deputy Darla Calhoun is assigned as liaison officer to his team. Her skills as a sniper come in handy when a gang of human traffickers strikes close to home, kidnapping local women including her best friend.

    About the Author

J.D. Faver lives near Houston, Texas. She writes steamy contemporary romance and romantic thrillers/mystery/suspense. She loves to kill people…on virtual paper, that is. Although she writes daily, she still finds time to enjoy family and friends. She is a foodie and an adventurous cook. Determined to preserve generations of family recipes, she is publishing a series of cookbooks entitled A Texan in the Kitchen.
Gardening is another passion (and linked to the food thing) since she has an orchard of fruit trees and berry bushes/vines in her back yard. Tomatoes and other veggies round out her kitchen garden.
All other interests (painting, drawing, sewing, quilting, crocheting, weaving, stained glass and pottery) have taken a back seat since they require hands-on participation which is difficult if your fingers are always on the keyboard.
An active member of several Houston writer’s organizations, she belongs to National RWA and is a member of Houston chapters.
She is owned by two cats and a small, yappy rescue dog. As a former educator and healthcare professional, she is an advocate for children, animals and elderly/disabled individuals.
She would rather be sailing or on a beach somewhere, but if not, you can probably find her with her fingers on a keyboard, pouring word images onto the virtual films playing in her head.

Heath Kalman: Love Me Not @VilletteSnowe #RLFblog #romance

    Love Me Not

    Interview with Heath Kalman

This interview is designed for your hero or heroine to tell
    readers about himself or herself.
    Tell us about
    yourself, please.
I’m an Ivy League graduate with a degree in literature, a
    widower, and a gigolo.
In the story world your author created, explain what it is
    you fear most and why.
I fear that Kimber, somewhere deep with herself, loves me in
some way. I would rather she hate me. A person you hate can hurt you only so
much; a person you love can destroy you.
    Tell us about your
significant other, that person who makes living worthwhile.
Kimber is gentle, yet feisty. She’s a true fighter. Her
family turned their backs on her, simply because she followed her conscience
and chose for herself, and she’s finding a way to live on her own.
    What would that
    person say about you?
I pray she has nothing much to say, that she’s forgotten me.
When my one-year deadline is up, she’ll feel nothing. She won’t feel the need
    to grieve.
    What is your family
    like?
My mother died in a mental hospital. My sister raised me.
    What special skills
    do you rely on?
I make women moan and squeal with pleasure. I suppose I can
still write, but no one sees anything I put on paper anymore.

    About the Writer

Villette Snowe is the girl you sat behind in
advanced English class, the one whom you thought was an angel. She makes the
best dirty jokes that so few people hear, the girl who rarely looks you in the
eye but makes you nervous when she does. She’s the one writing the intense
romances you won’t admit you read.
    What was your biggest
    challenge in writing this book?
    Getting through it without crying.
    Why did you choose
this character for the interview today?
He’s an intriguing juxtaposition of qualities.
    Are any sequels
    planned for this book?
No sequels. But I do hope to publish another similarly
intense title under this pen name.
    Why should readers
who haven’t picked up one of your books before give this one a try?
Give it a try for the steam; stay for the intensity and
depth of the story and characters.

  • 5 Easy Questions,  Contemporary

Dorothy A. Bell author of Dance Hall Road #RLFBlog #Romance

Dorothy A. Bell author of Dance Hall Road answers five easy
questions to help readers get to know her better.

    Author Bio

    Dorothy
    A. Bell, author of western and contemporary romances with Freya’s Bower
Publishing, grew up in southern Iowa, moved to Oregon’s Willamette Valley at
the age of eleven. She married a boy that she first met in the sixth grade, and
they’ve been married for fifty years.
    While
her two children were in school, she started to write Regency Romances to entertain
herself. As a facilitator of a writer’s critique group for several years, she
learned a lot from fellow writers. She took writing courses at a community
college. But Dorothy says, she’s learned the most by submitting her work to
publishers, editors and agents, and getting feedback.
    Laid
low for nearly twenty-five years with arthritis, forced to use a
battery-powered cart, Dorothy took up aquatic exercise and became an
instructor. She retired after eighteen years of instructing, and now goes to
the pool to do her own thing. After two surgeries to replace her knees, she
went to work on herself and lost eighty-five pounds. With renewed energy, she
put more into her writing, submitted her work, rewrote and kept submitting,
    which she continues to do.
    Dorothy
and her husband live in Central Oregon with their two West Highland White
terriers Corky and Buddy, a long-haired dachshund named Hector (Heck for short)
and Rocky, a big, angora tuxedo cat. She enjoys gardening and landscaping.
    What’s your favorite
    down-home family style meal?
We’ve switched to turkey burger. I make a stuffed turkey
burger that is to die for. Finely chop some of the dried and fried onions you
get in a can, you know the ones that you crumble and put on top of green bean
casseroles. Spread the finely chopped dried onions out on a plate, enough to
make a coating for the patty. Flatten out a patty of turkey burger on top of
the crumbled onions pressing the crumbles into the burger. In a fry pan sauté half
a white onion and asparaguses tips, season to taste. Place the cooked
vegetables on the turkey patty. If you have leftover vegies save them and serve
over the top of the cooked roll. Roll up the patty, pinch it together. Make a
seam on top and place seam side down in the fry pan, season and cook well done.
When done, place the roll on a serving plate and pour your favorite sweet and
sour or thai sauce over the roll. Serve with rice. Yummmm.
    What is your go-to
    meal when you dine out?
    Halibut Fish and chips
    Who is your
“book boyfriend” (that hottie you read about and drool over)?
Buck Hoyt from my book Dance Hall Road. He’s a big softie,
all gruff and crusty, but he cleans up good. He’s funny and he talks to
    himself. I love Buck.
    When you read for
pleasure, what kind of books do you choose?
I love to read romance authors who complicate their stories of
passion with obstacles, plus a smattering of danger and intrigue.
    What kinds of things
do you read when you’re researching a new book?
I read about the geography, the history and the commerce.
Historical societies provide a wealth of information. And of course, if I can,
I drive around, explore the area, talk to people.
