Fiction Furbaby: Meet Tom from The Eyes of Bast by Lisabet Sarai @LisabetSarai @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsWhen Shaina discovers a beautiful black tom in her feral cat trap, she has no idea the feline is a shape shifter and her fated mate. In Lisabet Sarai’s paranormal erotic romance The Eyes of Bast, an apparently ordinary woman battles a centuries-old sorceress to save the cursed creature she loves.

Lisabet, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We support all furbabies, real life or fictional. We want to know all about your Fiction Furbaby, but first, please tell us about The Eyes of Bast.

The Eyes of Bast by Lisabet Sarai

    Genre Paranormal erotic romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): NC-17

Trust your heart. Follow your dreams.

When instinct tells Shaina to visit the feral cat trap she’s set in Central Park, she listens to that inner voice. She discovers she’s caged a magnificent black tom, but the cat inexplicably vanishes after she tends to his wounds. Seeking the missing feline, Shaina encounters instead a handsome stranger whose slightest touch sets her body on fire. As the day dawns after a night of ferocious passion, her mysterious lover is forced back into his true shape—the tomcat she rescued.

Born a cat, Tom was transformed into an unwilling shape shifter by a sorceress who craved a human plaything to satisfy her perverse lusts. Centuries old and irresistibly powerful, Delphine Montserrat will stop at nothing to find her runaway familiar. Shaina vows to do whatever is necessary to defeat the vicious but seductive witch and save the man she believes is her soul mate—even though it might mean losing him forever.

Meet Tom from The Eyes of Bast

    Full name: Tom
    Nickname: Tom
    Gender: Male
    Species: Feline
Physical description: Tom is an all-black mature male cat, sleek and muscular, with hypnotic green eyes.

Relationship to main character: In his human form, Tom is Shaina’s lover and soul-mate.

Relationship to the villain/antagonist: Powerful witch Delphine Montserrat laid a shape-shifting spell upon Tom when he was young, in order to bind him to her as her familiar and to use him as an outlet for her perverse lusts.

Where this furbaby came from: Tom was born to a stray mother in coastal Maine. He was captured by Delphine when he was about six months old.

What inspired you to create this character?

To start with, I’m a confirmed ailurophile. I can’t imagine living without cats. But I’d never actually written a story with a cat as a main character. Meanwhile, I wanted to create a paranormal romance with a different sort of story line from what is typical.

Tom borrows some of his characteristics from the (mostly) black male cat Samson who currently lives with me although Tom is considerably more ferocious. Samson is a bit of a moosh cat, very sweet and affectionate. Physically, though, they have the same sort of grace and power.

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

Shaina is an animal lover who volunteers for a New York animal shelter. In her spare time, she works to capture and neuter feral cats. So she truly cares for the cat she discovers in her trap, especially when she sees that he’s wounded. Even though animals are not allowed in her building, she brings him back to her small apartment and carries him up five flights of stairs to tend to his injury.

By the time she realizes that Tom is more than just a stray feline, she has already fallen in love with his human persona. She commits herself to helping him free himself from the clutches of Delphine Montserrat, even though she understands she may be risking her love and in fact her life.

What does the villain/antagonist think about this furbaby?

Sorceress Delphine Montserrat believes that she owns Tom. After all, in a sense she created him. At the same time, some of her magical power comes from his presence. Thus, she’s determined to reclaim him as her own and vows to punish him for escaping.

    What does this furbaby eat?

When he’s in cat form, he eats cat food. (Shaina keeps a supply in her apartment just in case even though she’s not allowed to have pets.) When he’s in human form, at one point in the story, he eats buffalo chicken wings!

What is this furbaby’s natural habitat?

Tom is a New England cat. He grew up by the ocean, sleeping under the piers or overturned boats, and no doubt eating scraps thrown out by the fisherman.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

Well, since Tom is actually the hero, the story wouldn’t exist without him, LOL.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

In his cat form, Tom is gorgeous (as only a cat can be!), intelligent and independent. He’s very friendly and affectionate to Shaina, despite being an apparent feral.

In his human form, he’s strong, handsome and devastatingly sexy. In addition, he’s a tragic character, ensnared in evil through no fault of his own.

What triggers the shift from human to animal?

Tom is human at night and normally a cat during the day.

How does the shifting process happen?

When he’s touched by morning sunlight, Tom will shift from human to animal.

How does the human character think and feel about the animal side?

As a human, he retains quite a few of his animal characteristics. He has never fully embraced life as a man.

How does the animal character think and feel about the human side?

We don’t know, since the novella is written from Shaina’s perspective. Indeed, she wonders how much he remembers about being human when he’s in cat form.

    About Samson

This post is called Fiction Furbaby, but perhaps your own pet does not have fur. If you have a pet that has fins, wings, scales, or other features, please tell us about them here.

I actually have two cats at the moment, but as noted above, many of Tom’s attributes are modeled after my male cat Samson. He’s about eight now; since he was a rescue cat, we don’t know exactly how old he was when we adopted him. Unlike Tom, he’s not one hundred percent black; he has white whiskers, a white spot under his chin and under one arm, and one white toe. Also, his eyes are gold rather than green like Tom’s.

Samson is sleek and athletic. He’s a “high places” cat. He loves jumping up on top of our kitchen cabinets or other tall furniture. I don’t think I’ve ever had a cat with a sweeter personality. He loves to cuddle, and sleeps with me almost every night.

On the other hand, he does have his idiosyncrasies. Due to his early upbringing, he doesn’t always use the cat litter. And for some reason he likes to munch on plastic bags!Fiction Furbaby: Meet Tom from The Eyes of Bast by Lisabet Sarai @LisabetSarai @RobsRescues #RLFblog #Pets

What do your pets do when you are writing?

Sometimes Samson will sit on my lap while I write. He’s very skilled at being unobtrusive, unlike our female cat Delilah, who always wants attention.

Much of the time, though, they’re both sacked out on the living room furniture or on one of the chairs pushed under the dining room table.

What’s the most unusual pet you ever had?

When I was in high school, I had a white mouse as a pet. Unfortunately, mice are pretty fragile. As I recall, he didn’t last long; one day I found him dead in his cage. We always had cats as well, so it’s possible the mouse died of fright!

Where did you find your pet?

We adopted Samson from a veterinary clinic that had rescued him from the street. We already had Delilah and were looking for another cat to serve as her companion and stop her from being so aggressive. The vet attendant opened the cage where Samson was kept. The cat stepped out, put his front paws on my chest and gazed up at me with his gorgeous golden eyes. I was hooked!

Shout out to Rob’s Rescues – founded by a 9-year-old animal activist

Rob’s Rescues is a non-profit organization in Georgia helping people in need care for and feed their pets. It was founded in 2014 by a then nine-year-old boy. Rob’s Rescues is dedicated to collecting pet food for people in need to reduce shelter surrenders, and to advocating for the adoption of shelter pets. Rob writes monthly articles advocating for shelter animals in the Around About Local Media magazine publications. His column was first published in 2014. He also has pet food collection sites for people in need in the community and interviews amazing people. His interviews appear online once they are published in his column.
Rob volunteers for Pet Buddies Food Pantry, the Cherokee County Animal Shelter and Cobb County Animal Control and collects pet food for these organizations and the communities they serve. He also wants to bring attention to smaller, rural shelters. Mostly he wants to get kids to be Rob’s Rangers to teach kids that they can help shelter animals. Shout out to The Mountain Lion Foundation

The mission of MLF (https://mountainlion.org) is to help ensure the survival of the American mountain lion (also known as cougars, pumas or panthers). Their work includes teaching people how to co-exist with mountain lions, fighting legislation (e.g. related to hunting or trapping) that jeopardizes mountain lions, conducting research into mountain lion distribution and behavior, and generally raising public awareness about lions. Mountain lions are both a key indicator of a healthy environment, and a factor in maintaining such an environment. As an apex predator, mountain lions function as ecological engineers, meaning they help keep entire ecosystems functioning properly. Lions reduce the time deer and elk spend browsing along streams, which helps protect our waterways from both droughts and flooding. Furthermore, mountain lion carrion provides food sources for countless wildlife species, helping maintain biodiversity and keeping ecosystems intact and resilient to change.

J Arlene welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Desert Rose.

Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner

    Genre Contemporary Small Town Romance
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): Sensual

Secrets are the best protection against love.

Rose Badger is the local flirt, and if the other inhabitants of backwoods Blake’s Folly, Nevada, don’t approve, she couldn’t care less. With a disastrous marriage and a dead-end career far behind her, settling down is the last thing she intends to do. Newcomer Jonah Livingstone is intriguing, but with his complicated life, he’s off limits for anything other than friendship. Besides, Rose has a secret world of her own—one she won’t give up for any man.

The last person geologist Jonah Livingstone expected to meet in a semi-ghost town is the sparkling and lovely Rose Badger. But Rose, always surrounded by many admirers, doesn’t seem inclined to choose a favorite. So why fret? Jonah keeps his personal life well hidden…and that’s the best way to avoid disappointment.

    Trailer: https://youtu.be/tHPrIciT0XU

Why did you write this book?

Once upon a time, I found myself in a clapboard, rusty trailer, semi-ghost town in Nevada, where an ever-buffeting wind dragged dust across the frozen ground, rattled grasses, and set the doors of abandoned shacks tapping. The hotel I stayed in was a rundown has-been: ceilings soared high, and the lumpy, almost colorless wallpaper was surely a century old. In the hotel’s bar, a talentless band whined out bad country music, and eccentric locals dished up tall tales, wry humor, and suspicion.

It was a singular community, quite magical, and I’ve recreated it as Blake’s Folly, the setting for three romances: A Room in Blake’s Folly, All About Charming Alice, and Desert Rose.

What is your favorite genre to read?

I love reading history. A book that combines literary travel and history gets my undivided attention.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Flora Post in Stella Gibbon’s Cold Comfort Farm is a favorite. She is brisk, efficient, intelligent, but also has a wonderful sense of humor (so did Stella Gibbons, obviously).

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m finishing up Words for Patty Jo. It’s a romance, it’s women’s literature, and it is rather more literary than my other romances. I’m also working on a book of satirical cartoons.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

Hopefully, a book of my own cartoons.

Fiction Furbaby: Meet Malarkey from Salt by Liz Shipton @lizshipton @RobsRescues #RLFblog #Pets #SciFi

A drunken sailor and her level-headed friend undertake a deadly voyage in Liz Shipton’s new YA dystopian romance, Salt. When Bird Howsley receives a cryptic message from her dead brother, she and best friend Sargo set off across a world submerged in water to find him.

Liz, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We support all furbabies, real life or fictional. We want to know all about your Fiction Furbaby, but first, please tell us about Salt.

    Salt by Liz Shipton

Fiction Furbaby: Meet Malarkey from Salt by Liz Shipton @lizshipton @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsGenre YA Dystopian
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG-13

What do you do with a drunken sailor when the world is under water?

Bird Howsley is a drunken sailor with a knack for making bad decisions.

Unfortunately, she lives in a brutal dystopian water world where survival depends on being a strong sailor and making smart choices.

Bird has one lifeline: her level-headed sailing teacher, Sargo Paz. He’s a second-generation immigrant working hard to prove himself, and for reasons Bird can’t fathom, he seems to like her.

But when a cryptic message from her dead brother sets Bird on a mission to find answers about her past, one reckless act puts her and Sargo in the crosshairs of a dangerous underground organization that wants them dead.

Forced to flee their hometown, they sail into the Salt—where they navigate turbulent feelings and harrowing seas, and discover that the organization they’re running from runs deeper than they know…

    Meet Malarkey from Salt

    Full name: Malarkey
Nickname: Lark, Larkey, Larkabout, Larkaboo, Lark-a-bark
    Gender: Female
    Species: Doggerel (mutt)
Physical description: 80lb monster with brown and white splotches, blue eyes, and an eyepatch
Relationship to main character: Attack dog
Relationship to the villain/antagonist: Everyone is the villain until this dog decides they are not

Where this furbaby came from: The main characters rescued her from a gods-forsaken climate refugee settlement in the middle of the Turf

What inspired you to create this character?

This story is very much based on my own life and adventures, and Malarkey is no different! She is based on my real-live dog, Aloy, who my boyfriend and I rescued about four years ago. Aloy was extremely fearful and quite aggressive when we first brought her home. But she’s come a long way! Two years ago my boyfriend and I cut ties to the land and moved onto a sailboat, and Aloy came with us! She loves life at sea and is thriving. So far, Aloy has sailed down the Pacific Coast of North America with us and currently resides on the boat with us in the Caribbean, causing trouble for monkeys!

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

When Bird (the main character) first meets Malarkey, she naively tries to rescue her, not realizing that Malarkey is aggressive and quite a handful! At one point, she tries to abandon her again, thinking she is more trouble than she’s worth. But throughout the series, Malarkey learns to trust Bird and becomes her protector, and likewise, Bird learns to care for Malarkey.

How do other characters react to or interact with this furbaby?

Malarkey is ride-or-die: you are either in the pack, or you are an enemy. So pretty much anyone who comes in contact with her can expect to get a face full of teeth – until they prove they can be trusted, then it’s 100% tail wags and tongue baths.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

She is a savage guard dog, and adds some nice comic relief in the form of dog shenanigans. She also acts as a conduit for the main character’s feelings. When Bird cannot look another character in the eye to tell them something hard, she will usually tell Malarkey instead. Malarkey also acts as a way to unify Bird and Sargo (the male main character.) Their shared love of Malarkey brings them together in book one and throughout the series.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

Malarkey’s a legend in the making. She has her own voice and personality, and overall, is just a blast to have around. 100 years from now, people will be saying “Lassie who?”

Describe a humorous incident involving the animal character.

In book two, Bird and Malarkey must sail across an ocean by themselves. The first night they drop anchor, Bird tries to take Malarkey to the beach. Unfortunately, when they try to land the skiff in the surf, Bird falls out and gets mown down. Malarkey, however, remains in the skiff, perfectly dry, and drifts gently to shore with a look on her face that says, “What the hell are you doing in the water, human?”

About AloyFiction Furbaby: Meet Malarkey from Salt by Liz Shipton @lizshipton @RobsRescues #RLFblog #Pets

This post is called Fiction Furbaby, but perhaps your own pet does not have fur. If you have a pet that has fins, wings, scales, or other features, please tell us about them here.

Which, if any of the pets in your writing are modeled after your own pets? In what way?

Malarkey is 100% my dog. In the prequel novella to the series (Scourge) there is also an orange cat named Zig Zag who is somewhat modeled after the cat I had as a child. He has unfortunately passed away now, but I’m glad I got to immortalize him in writing.

What do your pets do when you are writing?

Literally anything she can to try and stop me from writing and get me to take her for a walk.

What’s the most unusual pet you ever had?

When I was a kid I had a lot of mice, hamsters, bunnies, etc. At one point I had a rat. I named him Pantalaimon after the daemon in Golden Compass. He was black and white, cute and very smart.

Where did you find your pet?

We rescued Aloy from a dog rescue in California called GEPDA – I’ve included a link to their Facebook page at the end of this article.

What do you feed your pet?

Dog chow and (don’t tell my boyfriend) table scraps.

    Part-time author Full-time pirate
Hi! I’m Liz. I’m a freelance writer, indie author, and full-time, off-grid, live-aboard sailor. I’m currently sailing around the world with my boyfriend and my dog, turning my real-life adventures into YA Sci-Fi and Fantasy books.
My debut fiction series, Thalassic, is based on my own experience sailing from California to Panama. It’s about two friends who are forced to sail across a dangerous ocean in a post-apocalyptic, high-tech dystopia. Along the way, they fight pirates, rescue a dog, run from a shadow government, and (of course) fall in love ❤️
I love incorporating the incredible experiences, beautiful places, and fascinating people I encounter on my travels into my work. Many parts of the world are underrepresented in fiction, particularly speculative fiction, and I feel grateful to be able to explore them, both physically and in writing. In addition to exploring the world, I like to explore themes surrounding mental health, addiction, technology and climate change in my books.
When I’m not penning YA novels about the impending apocalypse, I work as a freelance content writer specializing in articles about code (I used to be a software engineer), music theory (I also used to be a musician), and off-grid living/digital nomading. On the rare occasion I’m not writing, you can find me swimming, hiking, telling my dog I love her for the bazillionth time today, or watching Taskmaster.

Read the series: Earth and Sky Series by Janina Grey @janina_grey #RLFblog #ContemporaryRomance #PaganRomance #WitchLit

Life is for Living in the Earth and Sky Series is Book 2, following Love in the Forest, and preceding Lost in Your Rhythm, by Janina Grey. All three books (available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Soul Mate Publishing, focus on the lives of staff members at Earth and Sky, a healing retreat in the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York. The neat paranormal twist is that the many of the people live Pagan lifestyles and consider themselves witches. By day, their lives are filled with job stresses, relationship woes, life trauma, and family dysfunction many people can relate to at some point. But after hours, they show us glimpses at what life is really like for modern day practitioners. While there isn’t any sparks flying from their fingertips or pacts with demons, they do communicate with the dead, use Tarot, follow the Wheel of the Year, and devote their lives to Goddess.

Janina welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your series.

Earth and Sky Series by Janina Grey

    Genre Contemporary Romance, Paranormal
Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Single mom Jayde MacMillan does not need the headache of another man in her life, as she devotes her every breath for caring for her two toddler twins, and working full time to give them a stable and happy home.

Daniel Cameron is a free-spirited lover of all things beautiful—including women. He’s perfectly content with drumming around a fire and winding his way barefoot through the forests of upstate New York.

Neither expected to see each other again after a wild and passionate night of lovemaking at a local spring festival. A chance encounter and two precocious toddlers four years later says Fate has other plans for Jayde and Dan.

Some one-night stands are meant to last forever.

Which book is this in the series?

Life is for Living is Book 2 of the Earth and Sky series.

How many books do you plan for the series?

I planned on stopping at three books, but suddenly a mysterious cowboy named Brose Morgan joined the brand new Earth and Sky Equine therapy team. He and I are still getting to know one another. At this point I’ve only planned three, but who knows what the future holds?

    How many books are completed?

My third book, Lost In Your Rhythm, is set to be released on May 17, 2023. So all three books are finished!

What characters are the main stars in your series?

In Love In The Forest, Book1, Brooke Meadows, the camp photographer for Earth and Sky Retreats meets Joshua Quinn, struggling to come to terms with the death of his wife and daughters a few years earlier. A photographer by day and witch by night, Brooke is affectionately known as a death walker, and soon learns Joshua’s dead wife is trying to set them up.

In Book 2, Life Is For Living, Barefoot Dan, the lovable Pagan drummer sworn to bachelorhood we meet in Book 1, discovers the one night stand who broke his heart at a Beltaine, May Day festival four years earlier, is the mother of his children. Can he win Jayde’s trust? Does he even want to?

Jayde would be just fine without Dan, and does everything in her power to keep him out of her life.

In Lost In Your Rhythm, Book 3, Liza Purkypile, the new Earth and Sky camp photographer and recent cancer survivor is determined to find her independence and success in Demilune, where her new job is located. Jack Issa, a local music shop owner who has escaped his past and taking a time out from life to heal mentally, emotionally, and physically, meets Liza and decides this is the woman he wants to grow old with. Not knowing how much time she has left, Liza realizes cancer was an easy battle compared to the war waging within her heart.

What is the overall theme in this series?

The overall theme of the series is to show how Paganism is real, and witches do not shoot fire from their fingertips, have drug-induced orgies, or make pacts with the devil. They live, work, and play like everyone else as they search for their very own happily ever after.

Please list the series titles below, in any order you prefer.

Lost In Your Rhythm, Book 3, release date May 17.
Life Is For Living, Book 2, And,
Love In The Forest, Book 1.

What did you like best about writing this series?

I loved how the characters told their stories through me. It was as if they were dictating and all I had to do was make sure I got it right. They became a part of my life for the last three years, kept me company through the pandemic, and even helped me face a few of my own inner demons.

What other books (not in this series, have you written?)

I’ve written and published one other book with Soul Mate Publishing, Ten Bucks And A Wish, which was my first ever romance published. That takes place on Long Island, NY and is totally different from the Earth and Sky Series. No witches.

Janina Grey has been writing since she could hold a crayon, and there has been no stopping her since. Journaling, short stories, poetry, newsletters, news, feature, columns, Op/Eds, and press releases have kept her busy her whole life. But it was the sweet Harlequin romances she read in her downtime that stayed forever in her heart and gave her the inspiration to write her own contemporary romances now published with Soul Mate Publishing.
By day, Janina guides domestic and sexual assault survivors down their path of healing and empowerment. But in the wee hours of the morning, she hunkers down at her childhood writing desk with Imagine Dragons, Coldplay, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, or Led Zep streaming through her earbuds while she brings to life her characters as they face their real-life sorrows and successes, and best of all, their happily-ever-afters.
Growing up on Long Island and living periodically in Tennessee as a youth has given her the opportunity to meet many different types of people and experience many different lifestyles. After moving from Long Island to settle in the Mohawk Valley in Upstate New York with her family, she found the support needed to pursue her writing endeavors with Central New York Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America.
When Janina is not writing, she may be marching for women’s rights, kayaking, camping, drumming, or dancing around the fire.
