A sudden summer storm drives Miss Sophia Selkirk into a confectioner’s shop filled with the delicious scents of ice cream and candies. Just as she settled in with her glass dish of delectable ice cream, a shadow falls over the table: the fiancĂ© she jilted without explanation two weeks before has appeared. Can she trust him enough to reveal the secret that sent her fleeing from the only man she has ever loved?

Simon Warren’s entire life was jolted the night before the wedding when Sophia sent a brief note informing him she could not marry him. Now, he has tracked her down to this small confectioner’s shop, where over two dishes of ice cream, they will grapple with a secret scandal from the past and discover whether their love can overcome all obstacles.

What’s your favorite down-home family style meal?

I make a delicious enchiladas casserole that my daughter and niece love- super easy and yummy!

Who is your “book boyfriend” (that hottie you read about and drool over)?

A tie between Mr. Darcy of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice or Mr. Rochester of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre! I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention Karen Marie Moning’s highlanders (I’ve been a sucker for highlanders ever since I watched Highlander: the Series).

What’s your favorite hashtag to watch on Twitter?

I keep an eye on the #historicalromance hashtag, so I can easily find new books that are coming out!

    Describe the perfect vacation.

The perfect vacation would be visiting LEGOland Florida with my nine year old daughter Emma! We would eat ice cream, play with LEGOs, and go on all the rides!

    What are your hobbies?

When I’m not writing, I enjoy swimming, reading (historical romance of course but also other genres like sci fi), walking outdoors in Southwest Florida, and visiting sites like the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and our beautiful beaches.

Is It True: Inevitable (Oliveri Mafia Book Two) by Melverna McFarlane @MelvernaM #RLFblog #MafiaRomance

A rival mafia family means danger for RenĂ© and her loved ones in Melverna McFarlane’s new mafia romance, Inevitable (Oliveri Mafia Book Two). Although she promised herself she would never seek him out, RenĂ© approaches her ex for protection, but will he demand more than she can give for keeping her safe?

Welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Let’s play Is It True with today’s guest, Melverna McFarlane. This is a game with yes and no questions. Writers can elaborate on answers as much as they choose.

Inevitable (Oliveri Mafia Book Two) by Melverna McFarlane

    Genre: Mafia Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

    Nico

Four years ago, I made one mistake, and she left. I couldn’t convince her to stay no matter how much I loved her. Still love her. But one day she turns up at my door asking for my protection. A rival family is threatening her life and the business she busted her ass for. No matter what unresolved issues lie between us, the heartache I’ve carried, or the dreams I wish were reality, I won’t let anyone threaten her or the family I had always wanted to be mine. I will always protect her. But I am more than just a temporary bodyguard. I have a second chance to show her my love is worth fighting for, and I will claim her completely. With this new chance, she can’t escape the inevitable.

    René

Asking Nico for help is the last thing I want to do. After breaking up with him four years ago, I am not ready to be reminded of all the reasons I fell in love with him, to begin with. Avoiding him becomes impossible when he is still the only man I trust to protect me and my family from a rival mafia boss intent on ruining our lives. His every touch reignites my passions. Though I fight it, and will never admit it, my feelings for my ex had never died. As the heat between us flames to new heights, he tempts me with the possibility of a second chance at love.

    Is it true:

    this is your first book?

No. This is my second book.

this book is part of a series?

Yes. It is the second book within my Oliveri Mafia series and it can be read as a standalone.

you lost sleep while writing this book?

Yes! For a number of reasons, starting with the hero. Writing a cinnamon roll in a mafia roll was a challenge because it goes against so many expectations within the genre. In addition, I wanted to showcase a family with a mixed Caribbean heritage which included the language. Making Jamaican patois consumable and easy to understand for someone who doesn’t speak it or had never heard it was another challenge for me. Whereas I can see the similarities with English and patois, it wouldn’t be easily recognizable to a non-native speaker.

you did research for this book?

Yes. My hero is practices shibari. As a practitioner, he needed to show he was conscious of the ways to do it safely. The research was fun and I loved the patterns and, really, the artwork in the craft.

some characters in this book are not human? (pets for example)

Yes. As people who follow me know, I love cats. How could I not feature cats whenever possible? In Inevitable, Nico has a cat named Padronello (little boss in Italian) and he ends up being a little hero himself.

this book has more than one genre?

No. This is a romance novel, but it does meet a few sub-genre expectations. It is contemporary romance, mafia romance, and interracial romance.

you speak more than one language?

Yes. Not fluently, but I can converse in Spanish and of course there is English. I understand patois but am too shy to speak it with my relatives because I sound ridiculous doing so with my American accent.

you grew up where you live now?

No. I grew up in various states along the East coast, spending most of my years in Philadelphia. I grew tired of the extreme winters and summers so when an opportunity fell in my lap I relocated to Hawaii.

    you love to read?

Yes. My favorite is obviously romance. I read most of the sub genres and go through cycles where I binge certain ones. I also love epic fantasy, young adult and adult. Whenever I have a bit of writer’s block, immersing myself in the intense world building of a fantasy world seems to be the key to unblock my imagination and allow me to continue writing my stories, even if what I write is nothing like what I’m reading.

    you are never late?

No. I am a procrastinator and will always be late.

    you love pizza?

Yes. I would seriously reconsider my friendship to anyone who doesn’t.

    you love sushi?

Yes. Cooked, uncooked, vegetable…love them, though I will stop short at eating uni sushi.

    you have a pet?

No. Sadly my landlord will not allow me to have a cat, though I really wish I had one.

Read Fire and Amulet, the new #Fantasy by Helen Henderson @history2write #RLFblog #ParanormalAlone since he cracked his shell, Trelleir longs for companionship. In the new fantasy, Fire and Amulet by Helen Henderson, he learns having a slayer as a friend is dangerous when you’re a dragon.

Helen, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Fire and Amulet.

Fire and Amulet by Helen Henderson

    Genre Fantasy, Paranormal

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG

Trelleir is a true dragon whose magic allows him to take on human form. The last of his kind, he longs for companionship. However, his only friend is not only a human female, but a slayer. Sworn to kill all dragons, including him.

Summoned by the village council, Deneas is sent on a quest to kill any and all dragons, and cannot return without proof of her success. Finding the mythical creature and avoiding its deadly talons and fire are not her only problems. Another slayer follows with orders to kill her. As she retraces her slain mother’s footsteps, Deneas learns the world is not what it seems.

Why did you write this book?

I’ve always wanted to fly, either in the bright blue sky or the star-filled universe. The daughter of an airline flight engineer, I learned my numbers and letters helping update manuals and reading the instrument panel of an old Constellation. As a child lying in the grass of our New Jersey farm, I would identify airplanes from their silhouette or tail logo and watch clouds drift across the sky. At one time I studied aviation and considered a career as a pilot, so it is not surprising that I’ve written several works that feature creatures who play tag with the clouds. The Dragshi Chronicles feature humans with a twinned dragon soul. Two beings, one human, the other a dragon, able to change forms with each other at will. Fire and Amulet features a dragon who uses his magic to pass for human.

What is your favorite genre to read?

    Fantasy

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Menolly of the Harper Hall Trilogy by Anne McCaffrey

What are you working on at the moment?

At present I’m shifting gears after the release of Fire And Amulet to focus on other forms of writing. For the month of April, my blog featured the A to Z Challenge with each post based on the characters and world of Fire And Amulet.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

Two concepts are fighting for dominance at this time. A futuristic scifi and another volume set in the world of Trelleir and Deneas. It may take an executive decision maker (aka a coin) to see which story goes next.

An epic enemy-to-lovers saga that embodies the classic elements of duty, honor… and unexpected love.

History is brought to life in this sweeping Southern novel when a renowned Confederate cavalry officer discovers that the woman he promised his dying brother he would protect, is the Union spy he vowed to his men he would destroy. • Science Fiction Romance,  Two Tips

Eileen Troemel author of Celtan Dilemma shares a #TechTip for Rocketbook and beacons @EileenTroemel #RLFblog #Rocketbook

Eileen Troemel author of Celtan Dilemma shares a #TechTip for Rocketbook and beacons @EileenTroemel #RLFblog #RocketbookAn order from the captain of the ship creates a moral dilemma for Lieutenant Lillian Buckner in Celtan Dilemma a new Scifi Romance by Eileen Troemel. Does she become a traitor or a criminal? If she follows orders, she and her squad are war criminals. If she disobeys orders, they are traitors.

Eileen, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We want to hear your tech tip, but first, please tell us about Celtan Dilemma.

Celtan Dilemma is about a group of women who must choose to kill innocents including children or become traitors to their own species. Once they make their choice, they learn things are not as they’ve been told and the Celtan race offers options they’ve never had.

    Celtan Dilemma by Eileen Troemel

    Genre Scifi romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

    Traitor or criminal?

Lieutenant Lillian Buckner receives orders to take her squad of women pilots out to specific coordinates and destroy an unarmed transport. Lilly must decide whether to be a war criminal by firing on an unarmed vessel or to be a traitor and disobey her orders. Her life and those of her six pilots depends on her decision. No matter her decision, the punishment may kill her if she returns to the human forces.

    Trust or Punish?

Lord Hugh Korol fights against the humans. They invaded the Celtan’s territory and took sectors of space from them. The humans attacked their home world. When human women aid one of their unarmed transports, he must decide what to do to them. Can he trust the one he desires or will she break more than the fragile trust growing between them?

    Tech Tip

With working a day job and writing, my eyes get tired of staring at a screen. I tried writing on a tablet but the transcription was problematic and it took more time to correct the words so I’d lose the flow of my writing.

I love to write. Give me a spiral notebook and pen and I’ll write a complete novel that way. Except then of course, I have to type it up. I learned about Rocketbook and beacons at my day job but for my day job, I didn’t really need it. However, as an author, I saw a lot of potential. When I initially looked into it, it did not transcribe writing to words in a document it only took a picture. So I set it aside and did not use it. Fast forward a couple years, my middle daughter says mom do you want a Rocketbook. I asked if it could transcribe. She said no. I thought well I could try it and see if I could make it work. We got them and I set it aside to work on later. Then in my email, the company emailed to say here’s this new feature. You guessed it – Transcription. I had to try it immediately.

You can get the Rocketbooks in a variety of sizes. I have three – flip pad (think police officer’s notebook), journal size 6 x 9, and then spiral size. My favorite is the spiral size. It has lines and I can fit a lot on one page.

First time I did, I learned a lot. So I’ve written in a journal forever and in my journal, I write from top to bottom and side to side. So Rocketbook spiral, this is what I did. No. Leave plenty of space at the top and at the bottom there’s a QT code which the software uses to do it’s magic. Also don’t crowd your words or write edge to edge. It didn’t take me long to adjust my style for this.

So at the end of the day when my eyes are blurry from looking at a screen but I still want to write, I pull out this spiral size notebook and write. It’s soothing, relaxing, and allows me to continue to write when I struggle with screen work.

The software – app on your smart phone – takes a little to get used to but it is fairly simple. But you must have patience.

Two things I’ve figured out. My scans go to my One Note. You can also send them only to your email and there are all sorts of options. So in One Note you have to have a page available. But I’ve found it comes in to One Note faster if I have my email open as well.

At the top I write ## Title of Book ## This creates a tag in their software. So I add a number for pages – ## Celtan Dilemma 1 ## and ## Celtan Dilemma 2 ## and so on. This allows me to know if I’ve received each page I scanned.

Now the transcription. I am right handed and have relatively neat handwriting. Things that mess up – when letters go below the line it will interfere with the letters on the next line. If I write sloppy, it will put odd things in. But for the most part, it does a good job and as they technology moves forward, I believe it will improve.

This has all been about the books – what are the beacons and how can they be used? Oh I was excited to learn about the beacons. So these are little triangles you buy and can put on whiteboards – according to their ads and product information. The thing is when I read about them I thought of other uses for them.

How many of you have spirals of your writing that you’ll do something with some day? Transcribing handwritten stuff is a pain. It’s time consuming and tedious. But here’s where the beacons come in. Open your spiral of handwritten materials, take your four triangles and the software and start scanning. It takes a little to get used to how to do it, but I scanned three handwritten poems in a short period of time. Now I have them electronically. Even if it’s not in a spiral (if you’re like me) and it’s on the back of an envelope or post it or something else, put your triangles around the text and scan.

I have a handwritten cook book from my mom which I plan to use both the picture of the scan (so we can keep her handwriting) and the transcription of the text. When I’m done, I hope to have a family cookbook which includes family stories about food. Ultimately with this technology, I’ll be able to write wherever and however I want and transcribe it fairly easily. This will give my eyes a break and allow me more flexibility with my writing.
