Stephen Grafton from Christmas Carols by @DaisyBanks16 #Historical #RLFblog

    Daisy Banks shares details
about the creation of Stephen Grafton in the book Christmas
    Carols.

    About the Book

    Title Christmas Carols
    Genre Historical Romance
    Author Daisy Banks
    Book heat level G, Sweet
    Stephen Grafton, the blind organist
at Holy Trinity Church, is gaining a reputation for his fine playing and
compositions. Alice Broadbrace’s initial venture back into society after years
in deep mourning brings her to the notice of the talented organist, and he offers
her the opportunity to sing a solo carol to his accompaniment. His courage
convinces her to find her own, while her charm entices him into thoughts of
romance. A difficult walk in a snow storm is only the beginning of Stephen and
Alice’s journey to happiness. Enjoy this sweet Victorian tale of talent and
    love blossoming.

    Introducing Stephen Grafton

    Name: Stephen Grafton
    Age: 29
    Gender: Male
    Birthplace: Birmingham, England.
Profession: Musician and composer, organist at Holy Trinity
    Church.
    Ethnicity:  English
Stephen is approximately 5’10 in height, quite tall for the
era he lives in. He is lean and slender with fair hair and expressive hands.
Stephen has been blind since birth and uses a dog to help him, he calls the dog
    Blue.
    Who is the
significant other in your character’s life?
    Alice Broadbrace.
    How does your hero
    dress?
Stephen wears the fashions of his era, the early 1860’s. His
day to day wear is a suit with tail coat, trousers and waistcoat. For recital
performances he asks his valet to tie an elaborate bow tie for him. His dog,
Blue, also has a bow on his collar for recital evenings. As the story is set in
the winter Stephen wears a warm top coat and a hat. He does wear gloves as is
socially acceptable for the era but he dislikes them as they mean he loses
depth in his sense of touch.
    If you could only
hear this character’s voice (but not see him) what characteristic would
    identify him?
Self certainty and confidence radiate in Stephen’s voice. He
has passed through many trials to reach the position he is in and this means he
is definitely willing to voice his opinion with little fear.
    How educated is this
    character?
Stephen has a doctorate in music from Cambridge. He prefers
not to use the official title as he finds people make presumptions about him if
he does. He takes an interest in things cultural and issues of the day in his
    local community.
    Does he scrape by,
    live comfortably, live extravagantly?
Stephen has his own home not too far from Holy Trinity
Church. A legacy from a relative assisted him to attend Cambridge and once he
qualified to purchase his home. He receives a salary from the church for his
playing and his recitals. He lives comfortably enough with his dog, has a
manservant to attend him and assist with the running of his house, and a maid
of all work who comes in to clean.
    What is your
    character’s viewpoint on wealth?
Wealth is a useful tool which enables Stephen to travel and
live his life in the way he wishes. He does not consider himself to be a
wealthy man in monetary terms he is far more concerned with his music.
    Are any of his skills
a source of pride or embarrassment, and if so, which ones and why?
When Stephen was a very small boy a tutor recognized his
talent in music. He is a gifted musician and with coaching his skills improved
to the point he could attend university to study further. Stephen is aware of
his skills and is very demanding of himself in performance and composition. He
would say he is always learning.
    What kinds of things
does your character always carry in his pockets?
Stephen usually carries a white linen handkerchief, keys to
his home and to his cash box in the house. He also makes sure he has his coin
holder and some dog biscuits as a treat for Blue.
    Does this character
see morality as black-and-white, or with shades of gray?
This question would entertain Stephen as being blind he
doesn’t see the world through visuals but through touch, sound and smell.
Stephen has a strong sense of what he considers right and wrong, and finds some
social customs and expectations foolish especially those Alice believes might
lead to gossip. He would say, the gossips should go and find more useful
    occupations.
    Does your character
care about what others assume about him?
In short, no. Stephen is a self confident person and has a
vast amount of self belief. He takes care that his appearance and manners should
be acceptable and has attained a level of independence he enjoys. If people
assume he is weakened in any way by being blind he will do his best to show
them that is not so. He does recognize there are situations when he requires
some assistance and isn’t too proud to ask for it in unfamiliar places.

    About Your Writer

    Why do you think your
writer chose to write about you?
Ms. Banks enjoys the unusual and I suspect she found me a
surprise and therefore wished to work with me. As the story continued I like to
think Ms. Banks grew rather fond of Alice and I. We are both glad she told the
    story.
    What do you wish your
writer had not told others about you?
Nothing. I am aware that there are times in the story when I
am forthright and frank but those qualities are part of my personality. I am
sure readers will understand my motives for some comments were genuine concerns.
I only wanted the best outcome possible.
    What other character
from your book do you think your writer should write a book about, and why?
I think Ms. Banks should devote sometime to Elijah Whistler,
the owner of the Eagle Book Emporium. I would think there might be a natural
affinity between the two, with his interest in books and her work as an author.
If Ms. Banks spent some time working with him it might also soothe his
discomfort at the outcome of my story.
    Why do you think your
    writer loves to write?
Ms. Banks listens to music frequently but she is not
musical. I am afraid that is a flaw I am forced to comment on. Ms. Banks
neither plays nor sings and in my opinion she therefore devotes her energies to
writing. I do know she is quite driven at times when she writes. Having some
understanding of the creative process I recognize its grip on an individual.
However, I still think she would be improved by a more direct association with
music. When she began the tale I had hopes to influence her to at least take up
some choral activity but sadly I failed.
    Is there anything
you’d like to say to your writer?
Ms. Banks, Alice and I thank you for putting our story into
    words.

    Interview with Eva Kenward

    Tell us about yourself, please.
My name is Eva Kenward. I am
    originally from England
where I was a companion to my stepmother’s aunt. It was a comfortable, albeit
boring life. My only relations are a half-brother, and a distant uncle. I love
to read and have always been fascinated with tales of the Wild West.
What is it that you want, but cannot have?
Authors call this the conflict of the story.
I want to be part of my family, but my
stepmother and half-brother have other ideas for my future. I have a distant
    uncle in California.
Although he has not responded to my letters, I hope to be reunited with him in
    the near future.
What inner doubt causes you the most
    difficulty?
I constantly worry that when I finally
    succeed in reaching California
and find my uncle that he will have even less interest in me than my dead
    father.
What’s your external complication? In the
story world your author created, explain what it is you fear most.
My greatest fear is to never find my uncle
and be part of a real family. My life gets considerably complicated when I lose
all my funds, clothing…everything! I am forced to find work while my dream of
    reaching California
    slips further away.
Tell us about your significant other, that
    person who makes living worthwhile.
What would that person say about you?
    What is your family like?
My mother died when I was a little girl and
my father soon remarried. At first I was excited to have a stepmother, but that
excitement gave way to loneliness. She never had time for me, always too
concerned with the latest soiree or fashionable pursuit. My half-brother was
far worse. He was the heir and controlled my entire existence.
Are you happy with the way your story ended?
    Why or why not?
More than happy. All my hopes and dreams
came true in the wild west I love so much.

    About the Writer

    You
have the length of a tweet (140 characters) to describe yourself as a writer. Let’s
    see what you can do.
I’m a panster learning to plot. I love to
research, but I have to set time limits.
    Was
there anything you discovered about this character that was a surprise to you?
How willing Eva was to leave a comfortable
    life behind in England
and venture into the unknown by herself.
    When
you wrote about this character, what made you the most happy?
The simple joy she found in experiencing
    Hunt’s family traditions.
    Why
    do you write?
I write because I love to write.
    What
do you want to write next?
A Regency romance. The central theme is
family, but my hero loses sight of what is most important when he becomes
    obsessed with vengeance.
    Is
there anything you’d like to say to your readers?
I hope you enjoy the story as much as I
    enjoyed writing it.

Writing Tips: Tickle Your Nose @VickiBatman #RLFblog #authortips

    Great Fruitcake Bake Off
    Welcome Vicki
Batman back to Romance Lives Forever for a few writing tips.
    In church this past winter-almost-spring,
I sat behind a couple with granddaughters. The woman removed her fur scarf and set
it around a blonde cutie’s neck. The little one gathered the ends and rubbed them
across her face and pressed them to her nose.
I wanted to do that. I wanted to buy
a fur collar and do what she’d done in the worst way. Just by watching her, I could
feel the softness brushing my mouth and the scent of Chanel No. 5.
I like to buy vintage handbags, and
recently when I opened up one, a whiff of perfume teased my nose. Something old
and special. Remember when ladies put scent on their hankies and stowed it in their
bags? Remember peeking through Grandmother’s bath cupboard and seeing the cobalt
blue perfume bottle with a silver label inscribed Evening in Paris?
My cat is twenty years old and doesn’t
venture outside much. But when she does on a bright summer day, she will park herself
in a corner outside my window. I’m so afraid I’ll forget and leave her there; so
after a while, I retrieve her. I always kiss the top of her head, feeling the velvet
of her fur against my mouth. And she smells fresh, as if she had absorbed sunshine.
    Evening in Paris
My malti-poos on the other hand have
silky hair which grows into riotous ringlets. When freshly laundered, they are incredibly
soft and the hint of apricot from the shampoo lingers. But after a couple of weeks,
they cease being adorable and become plain ol’ smelly dogs. Dirt-stained paws, gooky
    eyes, sour scent.
On Sunday, I took the dogs for a long
walk. As we turned the last block toward home, I noticed the green pecans on the
asphalt from the squirrels’ munching. Even lines from gnawing were visible on the
hull. The leaves from water-starved trees littered the pavement. Some shaped into
long beige cocoons. Others in various stages of disintegration. The tink-tink of
the doggies’ badges clinking as they marched onward by my side.

When we write, are we taking the time to engage all our senses? Do we really
feel? Do we really smell? Do we hear?

    Green Pecans
What does our hero’s hair feel like?
Long is different from short. What does their skin feel like? Most men have hair
on their arms, legs and chest, and that intriguing line which runs below their waistband.
And don’t forget the scruffy beard and the adorable twinkle in their eye which makes
a gal want to twinkle right back and move right into the sexy dance… Whoa. Too
    much romance writing. LOL
We can enhance our power of sense
by observation. Stop rushing through the day. Sit. Listen. Take a lengthy look.
A deep inhale and a cleansing exhale. What does the raindrop plopping on the tin
roof of a boathouse actually sound like? What kind of caw does a parrot make when
he flies overhead? What does gravel crunch like when we walk down a path?
It’s hard to put sights, sounds, tastes,
and smells into words; yet when we get it right, we transport our readers further
into our story and giving them an intimate experience.
Sometimes, we over rely on ourselves
to create the sights and sounds.
When I posted a blog about watching
rain one morning, several people described the sound of rain. Lesson learned–ask
friends what they hear, see, taste, smell. Everyone’s experience is a little different
from our own, and maybe, just maybe, they might describe it better and the words
to take my work to the next level will come to me.
How do you enhance your senses for
your writing? What do you recall from reading a good book where the author
    brought out the senses?

    Interview

    If you could change something
about your first book, what would it be?
I changed the cover to Dare To Believe once and I’d change it
again. If you want to see the first cover, go to www.lasartor
and scroll down to the bottom of that first page. I’m not sure how I would change
it a third time, but I’d love to hear from the readers of the blog. Chime in. What
would you change from my current cover…also on the same website.
How do you cope with stress
    as an author?
I go into my back yard which is an oasis for me. Pond, views
of the mountains, peace. I get away from the computer, and if I still want to write,
use the ancient tools of pencil and paper. While I love the computer, it can suck
you dry. Too many distractions, and too many things I should be doing as well as
    writing, like promotion, emails, web-surfing…
    Do things your family
or friends do ever end up in a book?
Parts of them do and parts of me. I saw a T-shirt
once that said, “Be careful what you say or you could end up in my book.”
    True. So watch out J
    Which of your books would
you recommend to someone who doesn’t normally read your genre, and why?
I was at a signing recently and was told by some of the readers
who’d stopped by that they don’t read romance. So I started thinking about my books
and really, they are a journey, not only of the main characters, but I try really
hard to take you someplace you may not know. My screenwriting comes in as I set
the scene, place you there. I’m told I’m good at it. So yes, it’s a love story,
but so much more. Now how do I tell you that? Thoughts, dear readers?
    Imagine you get to go
on a dream vacation, but you have only one hour to pack and leave, and it starts
as soon as you finish this interview. What will you take with you and where will
    you go?
Shorts, bathing suit, sunscreen and my credit cards. Any island
where there is sun, sand, palm trees and blue, blue water. Let’s go now. Dare To
Believe is set both in Hawaii and Colorado. Two of my favorite
    places.
    What is your favorite
    holiday and why?
Christmas is. Which is why I HAD to write Be Mine This Christmas
Night. I love the magic, hope, peace and goodwill of the season and wish it could
last longer, like all year. Wouldn’t peace to all and hope for a better tomorrow
    be a good thing?
    Where were you at midnight,
on December 31st when the new century started?
Fun question. At home with my husband, waiting for a calamity
to befall the bank I was part of. I was on the Y2K team. We were extremely prepared,
    but YAY, nothing!!
Please underline which statement is more like you:
“I am a vacation spa because I am laid back and relaxed.”
    “I am a ten-countries in ten-days tour vacation, because
I do things as fast as possible.”
Both honestly. But If I had to pick…nope, can’t do it.

    Please complete the sentences

I love pizza with mushrooms, onions, bell peppers-any color
    and lots of cheese.
I’m always ready for wine and pasta, a good walk and a chat
    with my best friend.
When I’m alone, I love to read, do cross stitch and play the
    piano.
You’d never be able to tell, but I can be a very shy person.
If I had a halo it would be gold
    with diamonds.
If I could win the lotto I’d set up a literacy foundation.
I can never scuba dive again because I’m terrified
of drowning, but love to swim.
