Marry in haste, repent at leisure is the last thing on Sarah Forsythe’s mind when she and the son of a local minister elope to the American colonies. She wasn’t to know abandonment, misery, poverty and shame would follow. As the colonies rebel against British rule and the siege of Boston worsens, alone and afraid, Sarah hides her desperation behind a hard shell. To survive, she is forced to steal from her employer. Instead of the cash she needs, she finds Bank of England documents. Sensing they might have some value, Sarah protects them through months of deprivation until she finally secures passage home to England. Unknown to her, two men are following, intent on claiming those documents. At any price.

Bank of England fraud investigator Neil McAllister faces the biggest challenge of his career when a woman from Boston demands a reward for returning lost documents to the bank. Then two men with the same name and nearly identical stories arrive in England, each claiming ownership of them. Who is lying? Or are all three accomplices in a plot to swindle the bank? As the obstinate, secretive woman gets under Neil’s skin, he trusts that she was an unwitting witness to the crime of cold-blooded betrayal and treason before the fall of Boston. Alcohol Abuse in the Regency Era by AngelinaJameson @RegencyLady #RLFblog #HistoricalRomance #RegencyAngelina Jameson welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here!

Looking forward to reading about your research on alcohol abuse in the Regency Era, but first, please tell us about A Lady’s Addiction.

A Lady’s Addiction by Angelina Jameson

    Genre Historical Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Anna, a widow battling alcohol addiction, is convinced she is worthless unless she bears a child. Devlyn, sterile after an accident, has returned to England from an assignment for the Foreign Office. Anna and Devlyn join forces to protect an innocent child from a blackmailer. Can they come to terms not only with their feelings for each other but whether they will allow society to dictate the true significance of life?

Alcohol Abuse in the Regency Era

The heroine of my book A Lady’s Addiction has a problem with alcohol. Anna used it to self-medicate, to deal with the disgusting attentions from her husband. Now a widow, Anna struggles to rid herself of her nightly ritual of drinking a bottle of wine to dull her senses.

The term alcoholism wasn’t around in the Regency era and wasn’t coined until 1852. Reformers labeled those who often drank in excess as habitual drunkards. At the time habitual drunkenness wasn’t seen as a disease. I portrayed Anna as an alcohol abuser not an alcoholic. She uses alcohol to de-stress. If she continues on this path she would most likely become an alcoholic.

Anna’s drink of choice was wine. Wine was plentiful in upper class Regency households. Wine was a gentlemanly drink. It was imported and expensive, perfect as a posh drink for the upper classes. During the years of war between France and England it was harder to get French wine. The English turned to new favorite wines from Spain, and Portugal. These wines were Madeira, Malaga, port, or sherry. The hero in my book refers to Portuguese wine in the first chapter.Alcohol Abuse in the Regency Era by AngelinaJameson @RegencyLady #RLFblog #HistoricalRomance #Regency

During the Gin Craze in 18th century London binge drinking became a huge social problem. Gin was cheap and readily available to the lower classes. The heavy consumption of alcohol continued during the Regency. In the Reminisces of Captain Gronow, the author stated: “Drinking was the fashion of the day.”

It is well known that George IV drank heavily. Did George’s excessive drinking reflect current fashion or set it? I think both. Drinking played an extremely important social role in eighteenth century England. Anyone who reads Regency historical novels has heard of gout. The high consumption of port and fortified wines led to the upper class disease of gout.

What about women drinking in the Regency era? While there are many cartoons and articles from the Regency showing excess drinking by men, it was much harder to find information about those Regency women who may have abused alcohol. Lady Caroline Lamb was known to be addicted to alcohol and laudanum near the end of her life. It is taken for granted that women of society drank to relieve the boredom and monotony of their lives. Women drank wine with their meals and drank sherry in the drawing room after dinner. It is not hard to imagine women overindulging with all the alcohol surrounding them.

The prevailing attitude seemed to be that as long as your addiction didn’t affect your social obligations you were not rebuked for it.

Stuart, Bachelors and Babies (#10) by Caroline Clemmons

    Genre western historical romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG

He is building for the future…

    She is escaping the past…

    Trouble could destroy their family

Stuart McGee needs the bounty from capturing the two men he’s trailing. That reward will allow him to buy the ranch of his dreams. When he encounters the men, he learns they’ve killed a young couple. The big surprise is there’s a baby in their cabin. What is Stuart supposed to do with a baby girl?

Georgina Potter has to get away from home. Her family treats her as a screw-up. She is determined to prove them wrong. Starting over as a mail-order bride might not be the best way but it’s the only way she can get away from her family. When she arrives she learns her groom has married someone else. What is she going to do with no money, no groom, and nowhere to stay?

When Georgina and Stuart marry, neither is convinced it’s the right choice. Baby Adeline captures the affection of both. Can working together as parents ignite romance for Georgina and Stuart? When trouble comes, will their fledgling relationship disintegrate or become stronger?

Why did you write this book?

I was invited by Charlene Raddon to be a part of the multi-author project Bachelors and Babies. The premise is a bachelor in some way finds or is responsible for a baby for whom he is unprepared. That immediately put an idea in my mind and I was eager to participate. I’m so glad I did because I enjoyed writing this book. I think it’s the best I’ve written in a while. The heroine has “incidents” I had fun creating. Beta readers have said it’s their favorite.

What is your favorite genre to read?

Western historical but I read everything except horror, true crime, erotica, or sci-fi

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Taylor Stapleton from Prince Charming by Julie Garwood.

What are you working on at the moment?

Another fun project, Polka With Pauline, one of the Matchmaker’s Ball series books. I really enjoy these multi-author projects (MAP). They force me to stretch myself and I’ve been surprised at how much I’ve benefitted from the experience.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

I have a busy year planned. After Polka With Pauline in March, Mail-Order Victoria will release in April followed by a novella a month through December.

Read Always on My Mind by Andrea Downing @AndiDowning #RLFblog #NewRelease #westernromanceAndrea Downing welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about your book.

Always on My Mind by Andrea Downing

    Genre Vintage Western Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG-13

1972 – Vietnam, the pill, upheaval, hippies. Wyoming rancher Cooper Byrnes, deeply attached to the land and his way of life, surprises everyone when he falls for vagabond hippie Cassie Halliday. Fascinated and baffled, he cannot comprehend his attraction—or say the words she wants to hear. Cassie finds Coop intriguingly different. As she keeps house for him and warms his bed at night, she admits to herself she loves him but she misinterprets Coop’s inability to express his feelings. Parted, each continues to think of the other, but how can either of them reach out to say, “You were ‘always on my mind’?”

Why did you write this book?

I learned that there had actually been a bust-up between ranchers and hippies at my local dancehall in Wilson, WY, in the seventies. You really can’t get two more disparate groups—ranchers with their attachment to the land, their feeling for the generations that have worked it before them, and then hippies who are mostly freewheeling and care-free, unattached to anything pretty much. I just had to think, what if?

What is your favorite genre to read?

I read a lot of women’s lit. and literary fiction. I’m afraid to read too much romance in case I steal someone’s idea, although really, there are only so many tropes for romance.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

So difficult Kayelle! But there are characters in a literary romance, I’ll call it, Midnight Cactus by Bella Pollen, and I got very involved with them.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m thinking and promoting and haven’t started another book. I just sent in a new mss. to my editor so I’ll have my hands full for a while between that and promoting this one, but that’s not to say I don’t have ideas on the bubble.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

Hopefully, the historical western romance I just sent into my editor. It’s about a lady doctor and a former gunslinger trying to hang up his guns until he learns that his family have been murdered.
