With the curtain going up on his new operetta in less than a week and a key cast member out of commission, comic genius William S. Gilbert must turn to dashing understudy Frank Wilson – and fight his disturbing attraction to the talented young man.

Let your heart be your compass

It’s January 1887, a few days before the opening of the audacious new operetta “Ruddigore”. As if librettist William Gilbert doesn’t have enough to worry about, one of the D’Oyly Carte stars breaks his leg doing the horn pipe. Fortunately, the understudy Frank Wilson turns out to be immensely talented, as well as devilishly handsome. Wilson has set his heart on Gilbert – and he’s not going to be swayed from his course.

Why did you write this book?

When I was five years old, my parents took me to a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan songs. I’ve been a devoted fan ever since. This story, which I originally wrote for an anthology of queer alternative history, gave me the chance to imagine Gilbert’s and Sullivan’s world – and how a same-sex love affair might have turned it topsy-turvy.

What is your favorite genre to read?

This week LOL? Seriously, I read almost every genre. Indeed, in some ways I am anti-genre, since I view originality as one of my most important criteria in evaluating a book, so the fewer genre tropes an author employs, the better I like it.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

At the moment I’m steeped in the Victorian era, having just finished my Victorian steam punk trilogy The Toymakers Guild as well as Opening Night. So Sherlock Holmes definitely springs to mind, also Jane Eyre.

Depending on context, I might answer this question very differently the next time I am asked!

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m in the process of writing an erotic novella that links two of my fictional worlds. I also have an unfinished paranormal menage romance that has been sitting on my hard drive for a couple of years. I’m committed to completing that this year, hopefully in time for Halloween.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

In addition to the erotica novella mentioned above, I will be publishing new editions of several of my romances, including my popular paranormal romance The Eyes of Bast and my contemporary, multiracial menage tale Wild About that Thing.

Lisabet Sarai became addicted to words at an early age. She began reading when she was four. She wrote her first story at five years old and her first poem at seven. Since then, she has penned plays, tutorials, scholarly articles, marketing brochures, software specifications, self-help books, press releases, a five-hundred page dissertation, and lots of erotica and erotic romance – over one hundred titles, and counting, in nearly every sub-genre—paranormal, scifi, ménage, BDSM, GLBT, and more. Regardless of the genre, every one of her stories illustrates her motto: Imagination is the ultimate aphrodisiac.
