    Interview with Ellie MacKyrie

    Tell us about yourself.
I am the laird of clan MacKyrie. Female lairds are rare in Scotland’s
    history, but not unheard of.
    Tell us about Donal MacNabb:
Donal is…was…the arms master to Clan Lathan, his adopted
home. He rarely smiles, so he can be intimidating. He’s a master swordsman. A teacher.
My rock. He…a man…appeared in several dreams. The man I Saw might have been
someone else, aye, but the more time I spent around Donal, the more certain I became.
He had the skills my clan needed most, and he…appealed…to me as no other.
What do you think is your
    greatest strength?
I will do what is necessary for the good of my people.
    What would Donal MacNabb
    say is your greatest strength?
I go after what I want and dinna take ‘nay’ for an answer. As
    he has learned.
    What would Donal say is
    your biggest weakness?
That I’m too soft-hearted. It’s hard for me to make some of the
decisions a laird must make. Then again, I suppose some decisions are hard for anyone
    to make.
What do you wish was different
    about your life?
Had ye asked me before I met Donal, I wouldha wished that Flodden
never happened. That my clan remained as it was before all those deaths, my father
and brothers still alive. I would still wish for that, but I would also wish for
Donal to be at my side. We were decimated by the loss of our fighting men at Flodden
in 1513. MacKyrie consists of women, children, and a few old men and lads. Few would
know of our existence, except for the whisky we make, but our neighbors have had
their eyes on the clan’s holdings – and me – since Flodden. The Lathans brought
a treaty promising assistance from nearby clans, but also committing MacKyrie to
provide the same, which we were in no position to do. I saw the Lathan treaty as
a two-edged sword that could work for us or very much against us. Donal’s presence,
and the men from the treaty clans he has brought to us, help to even the odds.
What is it like for a
    woman to be laird?
I canna speak for women who lead other clans, only for MacKyrie.
It has been…difficult…challenging…since our men left to fight with the King.
Our clan’s only survivor, actually a fosterling from anther clan, brought us the
awful news, then disappeared a few months after his return, consumed by his shock
and grief. I doubt he still lives. The few warriors my father left behind have been
lost in skirmishes with the neighbors. The main thing that has saved us thus far
is that the neighboring lairds are wary of each other. Should one invade MacKyrie,
the others wouldna be far behind, and they’d fight like dogs over the scraps of
our home. But it isna all bad. My people are my treasure, and have supported me
in every way. We’ve made much progress, more so since the Lathans arrived, but there’s
    still much to do.
    Some men claim that a
woman can not be a successful laird.
A woman canna be a laird, ye say? Of course she can. She can
even lead her warriors in battle, if she’s trained for it. And Queens have ruled
Scotland. But a woman must maintain her authority through craft, wit, and respect
more than strength. She must have allies.
    How does your Sight work?
I dream, rarely clearly. I may See only a brief glimpse. Or the
dream may last a while, but as dreams do, make little sense when I awake. Some dreams
come to me more than once. Those, especially, I must heed.
    What advice would you
offer other women thrust into positions of responsibility and power?
As I said, a woman must have allies. No matter how secure her
position within her clan, she will be beset by outsiders, and possibly from within
her own clan. Some men will pursue advantage by any means, fair or foul. Most women
cannot defeat a man in a physical battle unless she is very skilled or very lucky,
so she must have champions who will fight for her. She must be able to command respect.
But a woman walks a fine line between being perceived as a strong leader and a shrew.
So she must also nurture her people and protect whatever it is that comprises the
wealth of her clan. Many men believe that marriage conveys the lairdship upon them.
That isna the case, but If she is very lucky, she will find a man to stand beside
her, to be her strong arm, her rock and her comfort. As Donal is for me.

Willa Blair is the best-selling and award-winning author of Scottish
romance with a paranormal twist, set in the 16th century Highlands, when the old
ways, and old talents, still shaped events.

her husband’s mind, cleaning house by simply thinking about it, and flying. But
alas, no. So she endows her historical romance characters with special talents and
lives vicariously through them. She loves reading and writing romance novels set
in the past, present and future.
She realized her life-long dream of becoming an author after
retiring from her day job to write, travel, and enjoy life. Married to her own military
hero golf fanatic, she lives in the Texas Hill Country north of San Antonio where
she writes, feeds hummingbirds year-round and has too many hobbies to count.

    Interview

Who has helped you the most in your career as an author?
My critique partners and other writing colleagues as well as
    writing courses I’ve taken.
When you write, what things do you want close at hand? (Coffee,
water, chocolate… pictures of gorgeous hunks for inspiration…?)
Chocolate is always good. I may be the only person on the planet
who does not drink coffee. I do love hot chocolate.
When you’re not writing, what would we find you doing?
Reading for sure. I love to sit in the sun and read.
Are you a plotter, or do you prefer to make it up on the spur
    of the moment?
I’m a definite pantser. I just write and then go back and edit.
Looking back at your first book, what do you wish you had
    done differently?
I wish I hadn’t tried to include so many time periods in one
    book.
    What’s your writing schedule like?
When I’m in the edit stage, I’m intense and respect the deadline.
When I’m writing a new book I write when I can, fitting it in between my “day
    job.”
    Any advice for new authors?
Finish the book. You can always fix copy on a page. You cannot
    fix a blank page.
What aspect of your life do you write into your books?
I write a lot about older women nearer to my age. I include my
personal preferences—foods I love, colors I love, places I’ve been.
When an idea hits you, what do you do to capture it?
I take notes on any available slip of paper in my purse or on
in the Notes section on my iPhone. I try to carry around a small notebook for this
purpose, but it’s not always available.
If you knew it would be a bestseller, what book would you
write that you might not write otherwise?
So far, I’ve written every book I’ve wanted to.
What’s keeping you from writing that book?
    Actually, I’ve been very
prolific this year. By the end of the year I will have five books published, one
self-published and four under contract with a traditional publisher. Not all may
    be released in 2013.
What other jobs have you held besides writing? Or jobs you’ve
done while you were a writer.
    I head my own public
relations firm. I’ve been editor of a regional corporate newsletter, marketing manager,
and special events manager for AT&T; I was an Information Specialist for the
Florida Department of Corrections (the prison system) where I learned to work with
printers (the inmates in the institution that housed the printing press) and I heard
a lot of “fish” stories (I’m innocent). On my first day on the job four
women escaped the women’s correctional institution and we had a tent city situation
when the system got overcrowded. I spent one summer at the Downingtown Inn
    in Pennsylvania
as a reservationist, living on the property in a situation similar to Dirty Dancing.
    My most exciting projects
were involvement in the Olympics in Atlanta, Sydney, Salt Lake
City and the LA Olympics. Annual reports for one client
that involved travel throughout Europe, were also
    very interesting.
Which of your books was the hardest to write and why?
    Sixth Sense

Under the Moon Gate took 10 years to perfect. I wasn’t writing
all that time. Most of that time it was dormant. But the book has been through many
iterations. It started out encompassing three generations and I finally opted for
two generations in one book and one, in the 17th century, in the prequel, Destiny:
    A Bermuda Love Story.

What are you currently reading for fun? Anything for research?
I just finished Revenge Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger, which
I really enjoyed. I got to meet the author twice at book signings. I’m in two book
clubs, so between books I read for pleasure and books for the book clubs, I’m never
without a book. I recently went on a Behind the Scenes tour on a Mediterranean cruise
to do research for an upcoming book, a murder mystery that takes place on a ship.
What’s the best gift you ever received?
The best recent gift was from my children. Two tickets to an
    Andrea Bocelli concert in Atlanta
    in December. I love him.
If you could time travel what era would be your first stop?
    World War II.
    Do you believe in luck?
Absolutely. I’ve been very fortunate in my life.
What kind of music do you listen to while driving? Same question
    when writing?
Andrea Bocelli and Broadway music. I love music from the ’40s.
Do you play any musical instruments?
    No. I took piano lessons
but they didn’t take. All I remember is Heart and Soul.
    What is your secret talent?
    I don’t have a sense
of smell so I have a well-developed sixth sense.
    What’s your favorite movie?
    Casablanca
Are you the eldest, middle, baby, or only child?
    Eldest.
    Do you think it’s important
to write in just one genre?
No. I write humorous women’s fiction, historical romance, romantic
    suspense and paranormal.
How did you get your start in the industry?
    I joined Georgia Romance Writers.
What is the most important thing you do for your career now,
as compared to when you first started writing?
Social media. Create my Web site.
What websites do you visit daily?
I comment on my group blog, Petit Fours and Hot Tamales.
If you could change something about your first book, what
    would it be?
I’d offer it in print format, not just as an EBook.
What do you enjoy most about writing?
The freedom and flexibility, the creativity.
If you could give the younger version of yourself advice what
    would it be?
    Keep writing. Don’t give up.
What is your work ethic when it comes to writing?
I have a strong work ethic, but I’m primarily motivated by deadlines.
If something is due I’ll get right on it. If not, I tend to procrastinate.
Do things your family or friends do ever end up in a book?
OMG. All the time. My sister always prefaces everything she says
with, “Now, this better not end up in your book.” My other sister and
sometimes writing partner gave me a sweatshirt that said, “Be Careful or You’ll
End Up In My Novel.” I write down snippets of conversations wherever I hear
them, at the hair salon, in the grocery store, at dinner. Sorry, if you say something
interesting, you’re likely to end up in my books.
Which of your books would you recommend to someone who doesn’t
normally read your genre, and why?
My favorite book so far is Under the Moon Gate, my newest release.
It’s a historical, romantic thriller and it has intrigue, spies, romance, and humor.
I think people actually prefer the WW II-era romance to the contemporary.
What kind of books do you read when taking a break from your
    own writing?
I love anything Nora Roberts writes. I love women’s fiction.
    I love spy novels.
What do you think is the future of traditional publishing?
I think it’s great but I also like self-publishing. My sister
and I cowrote two books, Murder at the Outlet Mall, a comedic mystery, and The Edger,
a humorous women’s fiction and we enjoyed that experience. We also wrote a musical
and are thinking of self-publishing it while waiting to get it produced.
What was the proudest moment of your life so far?
When I won the Maggie Award at the Georgia Romance Writers Conference
    in 2012.
Imagine you get to go on a dream vacation, but you have only
one hour to pack and leave, and it starts as soon as you finish this interview.
What will you take with you and where will you go?
My summer dresses, bathing suit and cover up, hat, sandals, something
dressy. I would take my husband or daughters and probably go to Italy.
We just got back from a Mediterranean Cruise and I’m ready to go back to The Amalfi
    Coast.
What is your favorite holiday and why?
Labor Day because we go to our condo in Florida.
What good book have you read recently?
Dorothea Benton Franks’ The Last Original Wife.
What do you like to do when you’re bored?
Watch TV, actually fall asleep in front of the TV.
If you were a color, what color would you be?
    Definitely green. That’s
my favorite color and I haven’t wavered in that since I was born. I have gravitated
toward lighter greens, like sea greens and blue greens.
Please underline which statement is more like you:
“I am a vacation spa because I am laid back and relaxed.”
    “I am a ten-countries in ten-days tour vacation, because
I do things as fast as possible.” But I wish I were laid back and relaxed and
    could enjoy a vacation spa.

    Please complete the sentences

I love pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms, cheese and black
    olives
    .
I’m always ready for a vacation.
When I’m alone, I like to read.
You’d never be able to tell, but I don’t have a sense of smell.
If I had a halo it would be made
    of gold
    .
If I could find a producer, I would love for my play
    Memory Lane
    to be on Broadway
    .

What are your main characters’ names, ages, and occupations?
    Wren Moseley is a twenty-one
year old widow who is struggling to maintain her family’s estate and beloved village.
Niall, the Duke of Aronia, is the thirty-year-old son of the Aronian king, who is
    on his deathbed.

    Interview

Tell us about your story’s world. What is it like in this
    period or place?
In my Princes series, much of the stories take place in Noventia,
a fictional kingdom. For this book, I headed to Aronia, a neighboring kingdom that
    is like the “Paris”
of the semi-historical world I’ve created.
What inspired you to write this book?
    This is the fourth book
in the series, so of course the preceding books were inspiration. But I mostly drew
on the Robin Hood tale as I created Wren and Niall’s story. It was fun to create
a role reversal, which is typical in my books. Men aren’t the only ones who get
    to have all the fun!
Which character in your current book do you think readers
    will like the most? Why?
    Definitely Wren. Although
her brother, Wilhem, is quickly becoming a favorite. Wren is a strong heroine, one
who is determined to protect what she loves. It’s easy to fall a little in love
    with her.
    Why do you write?
    I write because I enjoy
it. No matter whether it gets published or not, I love weaving a story and making
it turn out exactly how I want it to. Even though sometimes my endings even surprise
    me!
When you’re not writing, what would we find you doing?
    Sleeping, I hope! If
I’m not at the day job, I’m pretty much stationed at the computer. There is so little
time as it is, that I have to squeeze in writing as much as I can.
When an idea hits you, what do you do to capture it?
    Typically titles come
to me first, so I usually jot them down in my “Story Idea” folder if I’m
at my computer. If I’m away from home, I make a note in my cell phone for future
reference. Inspiration comes to me when I’m driving usually, which is always a coin
toss on whether I’ll actually remember it by the time I get where I’m going.
What’s the best gift you ever received?
    Do you believe in luck?
    Since I’m fond of blackjack,
I would have to say yes. Also happy to say I’m a fairly lucky person…or maybe I
just always look at the silver lining.
Do you play any musical instruments?
I can play the piano a tiny bit. I also play the clarinet. Band
    geek here!
    What is your secret talent?
    I can blow a chewing
    gum bubble with my nose.
    What’s your favorite movie?
    Sommersby, a Civil War-era
movie featuring one of my faves, Richard Gere.
Are you the eldest, middle, baby, or only child?
    I’m two of these actually.
I’m the middle child, but I’m the only girl. So that means I’m special. ; )

    Please complete the sentence

    I love pizza with mushrooms.
    I’m always ready for bed.
When I’m alone, I must be daydreaming cause I’m never alone.
You’d never be able to tell, but I’m very shy.
If I had a halo it would be the
    one Beyonce sings about
    .
If I could win the lottery I’d retire.

in book 1 she ends up with a job as a sort of hotel manager, and de facto PR rep
for the hotel owner. For a woman in 1871, she’s strong and capable and knows what
she wants. In book 2 she gets a new job one well suited for her librarian.
    Cole Mitchell is in his
mid-30’s (he won’t reveal his age, sorry…he keeps personal facts close to the vest).
He is 51% owner of a saloon and brothel in Dominion Falls.
When the story first starts he’s content to be alone and never let anyone in. Jane
brings something to life in him, and he resists until he realizes he doesn’t want
    to resist any longer.

Interview with Katherine Daugherty aka Kat

    Tell us about yourself.
Well, I’m not one to talk about myself.
*Mad laughter breaks out in the next room. Kat’s nose wrinkles
and she shouts at the door*
Shut up, Jane! Anyway. My name’s Katherine Daugherty, most people
call me Kat. Jane’s lover, and my former lover, Cole, calls me Kathy. I’m in my
mid-twenties and have no qualms about that “old maid” line of bull.
I was the “oops, what a surprise” baby to my parents.
After they had Martha they tried and tried to have a boy, but nothing ever happened.
After ten years of trying, they gave up. Five years later, voila.
I didn’t want to be part of the arranged marriage my mother planned
for me, so I took off at fifteen. I joined the temperance league for a while, but
boy-howdy did those women take some brutal tasks to forward their goal, it wasn’t
my cup of tea but a cup of whiskey turned out to be, so I left them. Spent some
    time back in Dominion
    Falls after, took up with
Cole, because well, have you seen that man? It was a fun romp, but then I fell for
Norman…and then I can’t explain why, but I left Dominion Falls
    again.
Since then I’ve been living in St. Louis. I work at a bank, but in my free time
I work to forward the suffragist movement.
    Tell us about Norman.
    Norman
is a bit older than me.
*Jane pops her head in the door* He’s ancient, Kat. At least
    twenty years older than me!
*Kat waves her off* Yes, yes. He’s older, but as I tell Jane
in the book there’s something to be said about a man that works the telegraph. They’ve
got some strong fingers. *Kat winks*
Oh, yes, so he runs the depot and the telegraph office. I can’t
explain why I fell for him, he seems to be a grumpy old man, but I just do. He’s
    a good man.
What do you think is your strongest point?
I’m strong. Stronger than you might think. I may have grown up
in privilege, but once mother disowned me for leaving town I had to make my own
way. I’ve made mistakes, but I don’t regret any of them. Not even a little.
What was it like where you grew up?
    Dominion
Falls is a great little town.
When we first went there when I was quite young, there was nothing. Father first
formed a little camp when he found the gold. Father had vision and started that
town using the first of his gold strikes. More men came in, and Father was smart
enough to charge to use the buildings he was having built, and then use that money
to buy mines from the less successful miners.
So I got to see Dominion
Falls go from small camp to
a tiny town. Sure, it was dirty and rough and miners aren’t the nicest people sometimes,
but Father and Mother always pushed for more than that. The used their wealth to
make sure I got educated in Denver, and eventually
moved there themselves, but no matter how much time I’ve been away, Dominion Falls is home.
What do you wish was different about your life?
Up until I came home and met Jane I had one big wish to move
back home. I’m grateful that I have a good friend now, one like Jane, that pushes
me to do what I need to, what I know I’ve needed to do. It’s not an easy step for
me, but you’ll have to read the book to find out why.
If you were given your fondest wish, what would it be?
I’m afraid I can’t answer that one, either. My author doesn’t
want me to reveal secrets before their time.
*Kat leans in to whisper* But I have to say I get all I wish
for and all I didn’t know I wanted within a year of returning home.
As a child, who was your best friend? Tell us about him/her.
I didn’t really have many friends as a child. Being the Daugherty’s
    daughter and sent to Denver
for schooling made it hard to establish friends. I was too rich in Dominion Falls,
    and too poor in Denver
    society.
I’m happy to say that now, finally, I do have a best friend.
Jane. I couldn’t ask for someone better. Sometimes you meet someone and instantly
connect, and I had that with Jane. I think she hates that I’m brutally honest with
her, but she’s no shirk either, gives me the same honesty right back.
