Heather, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! Please tell us about Scarred Melody.

Genre Rockstar Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

“We all have scars, El. The only difference is I can see yours.”

Elsie

All I knew was music. Writing it, playing it. The sway of the melody traveled through me. It kept me company as I hid my face under a mask.

My dream of singing in front of the crowds was long forgotten. Now I hide in the shadows, only emerging to help fellow artists launch their careers.

Enter Skyler Dalton, my teenage heartthrob.

Skyler

My best friend died. My last album bombed. I punched out a paparazzi.

Life hasn’t been going my way.

The label offered an ultimatum, work with a professional songwriter to salvage my solo career or hit the road.

Luckily, Elsie was easy to work with. I wasn’t looking for love, but what I found was a lot more than just a new song…

Why did you write this book?

I love fantasizing about being a Rockstar. Being on stage, feeling the music, the energy of the crowd. The adrenaline is sensual. Listening to music and letting the feelings consume you, is also very sensual.

So when I started reading rockstar romances, it surprised me that there wasn’t as much of a connection to the creation of music. What’s unique about this subgenre is that music is like a third person in the relationship. The characters connect to it separately and together.

When I started mulling this over, scenes of a washed up rockstar who’d lost his connection came to me and wouldn’t leave me alone. Skyler was begging me to help him find his voice again.

But who could help him? At the time I’d recently read The Bride Test by Helen Hoang, an amazing book about a young man with autism who finds love. Autism is amazing because some who have it are musical prodigies. People who connect to music so thoroughly, they express their feelings through it. Who better to help Skyler find his voice again?

Skyler and Elsie are more complicated than just a washed up rockstar and a musical prodigy. But this was the starting point for me. The story was just there…all the time, needing to get out. Its true what they say about characters living in your head—they wanted their story to be told and I was just the poor schmuck they chose to do it.

What is your favorite genre to read?

Other than rockstar romances I read a lot of MC romance. I love the biker clubs. Big, bad, tattooed men who ride motorcycles. Yum. I also read a lot of historicals. I love Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series. I am also a faithful Harlequin category romance subscriber from way back.

Who is your favorite character from fiction (not including your own)?

Bridget Jones. The shenanigans this poor woman gets dragged through cracked me up. She’s the everywoman who gets into the most ridiculous situations but just wants to find something meaningful.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m working on the second book in the Bold Melodies series, Bright Melody.

Rockstar Travis White, a former protégé of Elsie’s, finds himself in a bit of a pickle. He must redeem his reputation. The label sets him up to be a judge on a televised singing competition, National Voice.

Jody Boyd loves her life. Slinging coffee and singing at the local biker bar every week. When National Voice holds auditions nearby she decides it’s time to finally put her neck on the line. After all, it’s a blind competition—no one’s going to tell she needs to lose a few pounds, or her hair is too frizzy. Right? Now, if only she can keep her foot out of her mouth!

Travis needs his team to win the contest, that means he’s going to do everything in his power to help Jody beat her competition. She needs to connect to the music and show that to the world. What he wasn’t expecting to find was a connection to the woman herself.

I’m also working on a short story for the postapocalyptic anthology Until the End. The story, Eden Falling, is set in a world where an alien virus destroys 99% of the Earth’s population and women are struggling to reproduce. It’s going to be very cool.

What books will we see from you in coming months?

Bright Melody is set for March 15th. Until the End – A Postapocalyptic Anthology is set to publish May 16th.
