    Fated Hearts by Becky Flade

    Genre Romantic Suspense

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): PG-13

Psychiatrist Henley Elliott fled her quiet life in Cleveland for a gypsy lifestyle, trying to stay one step ahead of her painful memories. When she breaks down in quirky little Trappers’ Cove, Minnesota, she meets Sheriff Carter McAlister – a man healing from his own share of hidden heartbreaks.

At the request of a friend, Carter offers Henley a job to help her get back on her feet . . . but soon he can’t resist trying to sweep the intriguing woman off them. Breaking through her carefully built shell proves to be a near-impossible task, and to make matters worse, a dangerous new presence in the Cove seems to be targeting Henley. They must learn to trust in each other in order to keep her safe.

Can Henley and Carter leave their secrets and scars in the past to get a second chance at happily ever after?

    Meet Dublin from Fated Hearts

    Full name: Dublin

    Nickname: Stupid

    Gender: Male

    Species: German Shepherd

    Physical description: Black and tan

Relationship to main character: Best friend

    Relationship to the villain/antagonist: Obstacle

Where this furbaby came from: The streets

What inspired you to create this character?

My dog, Ella, passed away from cancer shortly before I began working on the initial draft of Fated Hearts. Dublin, the hero’s dog and best friend, is a tribute to my sweet, silly girl who we often referred to as Stupid.

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

He loves his dog. They have their own back story and it’s an important moment in the book when Carter shares that story with Henley, I don’t want to spoil it.

How do other characters react to or interact with this furbaby?

Dublin is well loved by all the characters in the book, except the villain of course.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

Dublin is the only reminder of Carter’s past life that he brings with him when he starts over in Trappers’ Cove because Dublin is the reason Carter has that second chance.

Describe a humorous incident involving the animal character.

Dublin is allowed to explore the rural/forestry area surrounding Carter’s home, but on one such outing, he chases skunk(s) and Carter finds him doused in “perfume.”

    About Ella

Fiction Furbaby: Meet Dublin from Fated Hearts by Becky Flade @beckyflade @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsThis post is called Fiction Furbaby, but perhaps your own pet does not have fur. If you have a pet that has fins, wings, scales, or other features, please tell us about them here.

Which, if any of the pets in your writing are modeled after your own pets? In what way?

Dublin’s personality is based upon my Ella’s.

What do your pets do when you are writing?

She would always bump my elbow popping my arm up in the air, and then she’d slide her head under so when my arm fell it would land around her neck.

What’s the most unusual pet you ever had?

A chicken. I brought a baby chick home to Philadelphia from my grandparent’s farm in rural West Virginia. It wasn’t a good fit. J

Where did you find your pet?

I adopted Ella. She was a rescue.

What do you feed your pet?

    She liked Beneful

Describe a toy or favorite item your pet loves.

Pillows. She loved to curl up and nap on pillows of any shape and size. She didn’t know she was an 86 pound warhorse. She thought she was a tiny little lapdog.

When I was little, I thought everyone had stories in their head. I didn’t find out that wasn’t the case until kindergarten. I remember thinking that was sad; and that I should share the ones I had. I asked my teacher for help. I had her cut, fold and staple the paper into a suspiciously book-like shape. Then I drew the cover art and illustrated the interior pages. Finally, and most importantly, I dictated the text. And violà … a writer was born.
It took thirty years for me to get from that first attempt to published author. I think the road thus far has added some depth and experience to my writing. At the very least I learned I shouldn’t ever do my own illustrations.
A city girl, born and bred, I tend to place my stories in and around southeast Pennsylvania, or at least have a character or two from the area. Home is where the heart is and I make mine with my two beautiful daughters and my two grandsons whom make every day a blessing.

Fiction Furbaby: Meet Merlin from Kittens and Kisses at the Cat Café, a sweet #romance by Kris Bock @Kris_Bock @RobsRescues #RLFblog #Pets

Kris Bock, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We support all furbabies, real life or fictional. We want to know all about your Fiction Furbaby, but first, please tell us about your book.

Kittens and Kisses at the Cat Café: A Furrever Friends Sweet Romance by Kris Bock

    Genre Contemporary Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): G

He’s loved her forever. She still sees him as the neighbor kid. Can five desperate kittens bring them together?

Marley is a baker at the new Furrever Friends Cat Café, which is still trying to find its footing. Her nine-year-old son, Brian, desperately wants a kitten, but they can’t have pets where they live. Who has the time to date? Just as well that she’s protected her heart since the father of her child disappeared.

Adam has loved Marley since he was 13, and she was his best friend’s free-spirited older sister. Back then, he fantasized about rescuing her from bandits or dragons. Now he’s 24, and the five-year age gap isn’t so serious. He wants nothing more than to become a family with Marley and her son. But will she ever see him as a man?

When someone leaves a box of week-old kittens at the café, Adam jumps at the chance to be a hero. But herding kittens might be tougher than fighting dragons, especially when two of them fail to thrive. Can Adam, Marley, and Brian save the kittens and find a future together?

Meet Merlin from Kittens and Kisses at the Cat Café

    Full name: Merlin

    Nickname: Merlin

    Gender: mail

    Species: Maine Coon cat

    Physical description: big, shaggy, gray

Relationship to main character: Merlin lives at the cat café where Marley is a baker

Where this furbaby came from: he’s a shelter cat looking for his forever home

How do other characters react to or interact with this furbaby?

When the story’s lead characters start fostering five struggling kittens, Merlin literally jumps in to help. The kittens see him as their surrogate mama.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

The Cat Café series features lots of shelter cats who live at the café while waiting for adoption. In each book, one or more find their permanent homes. Merlin appeared in the first book as one of many cats named. He quickly developed a distinct personality and became a reader (and author) favorite. He finds his permanent home in book 3, Tea and Temptation at the Cat Café, but I’ll have to bring him back as a regular visitor.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

Maine Coon cats are known for being friendly and loyal, as well as extra-large. Some of them will happily accompany their people on outside activities, either on or off a leash. They’re sort of a blend of a dog and a cat, which makes them perfect for readers and owners who like both. Merlin adores everyone, grown human or child, cat or kitten, and he’s always up for a game or a cuddle.

Please share an interesting fact or tidbit about this furbaby.

Merlin is something of an escape artist. In the first book in the series, Coffee and Crushes at the Café, main character Kari shows up to her cat café one morning to discover Merlin trapped between the outer and inner door. He opened the inner door but couldn’t unlock the outer door. It’s a reminder of one of the challenges of cat cafés – keeping the cats contained, and especially out of the food prep area.

Describe a humorous incident involving the animal character.

In Kittens and Kisses, Merlin escapes the main café room where the cats are supposed to be contained and makes his way to the office. He mews at the door until Marley lets him in and then jumps on the desk and into the box of foster kittens. As Marley notes, he volunteers to be a nanny.

    About Panda and Bear

I’m writing a series about a cat café. But I don’t have cats. Huh?

I love cats. I have known cats and enjoyed them in small doses. But tragically, I am very allergic to cats, so I cannot let one keep me as a servant. (I’m getting allergy shots, so maybe that will change in the future. All hail our fluffy overlords!) In the meantime, I will write about a cat cafe, which gives me a chance to look at lots of pictures and videos of adorable cats and kittens.

Instead, my husband and I keep ferrets. They are similar to cats in some ways. When they play, they are as rambunctious as kittens. Like adult cats, they sleep most of the time. Princess Pandemonium (Panda) and Teddy Black Bear (Bear Bear) provide us with lots of amusement, snuggles, and cute photos for social media.

Meet Killer and Noodle from All About Charming Alice and Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner @JarleneCuliner @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsJ Arlene Culiner, welcome to Romance Lives Forever. I’m Kayelle Allen, author and owner of this blog. Happy to have you here! We support all furbabies, real life or fictional. We want to know all about your Fiction Furbaby, but first, please tell us about your books.

Romance in Blake’s Folly: Desert Rose and All About Charming Alice by J Arlene Culiner

    Genre: Contemporary Romance

    Book heat level: Rl

These two books go together, and dogs play an important role in both — as you can see from the covers.

The setting for both is Blake’s Folly, Nevada, a backwoods community of abandoned clapboard shacks, endless wind, and scraggly vegetation. In All About Charming Alice, Alice, my heroine, is a prickly character who rescues dogs, protects snakes, and actively fights against hideously cruel sports like rattle snake shows. My hero, Jace, an intellectual from Chicago, isn’t crazy about dogs or dog hair, and he hates snakes. Neither Alice nor Jace expect love, with its hesitations, misgivings, and bliss, to come galumphing over the horizon. Of course, before their relationship can work, Jace will have to learn to appreciate snakes — and that won’t be easy.

In Desert Rose, my hero, Jonah Livingstone, spends much of his time out in the open, sighting mule deer, bobcats, spotted bats, sidewinders, rattlers, and little gray lizards. My heroine Rose runs a secondhand dress shop, and the last thing she needs is an animal — what customer will buy clothes covered in dog hair? But when Alice arrives with Noodle, an ugly rescue dog, Rose doesn’t have the courage to hurt the poor beast’s feelings by rejecting him.

Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner

Men love Rose Badger, and if the other inhabitants of this dead-end town don’t approve, she couldn’t care less. With a disastrous marriage far behind her, settling down is out of the question. Isn’t life for fun? Doesn’t a stable relationship mean predictability and boredom? Perhaps things would be different with Jonah Livingstone, but he’s off limits because of a complicated past relationship. Besides, Rose has a secret life, and she’ll never give that up for any man

The last person geologist Jonah Livingstone expects to meet in a semi-ghost town is Rose Badger. She’s easy-going, delightfully spontaneous, and Jonah is certain their attraction is mutual. But Rose is always surrounded by admirers and doesn’t seem inclined to choose a favorite. And does he really want to settle into a permanent relationship?

All About Charming Alice by J Arlene Culiner

Meet Killer and Noodle from All About Charming Alice and Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner @JarleneCuliner @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsAlice Treemont has given up all hope of falling in love. Living in a semi-ghost town of old trailers, clapboard shacks, and thirsty weeds, she spends her time cooking vegetarian meals, rescuing unwanted dogs, and protecting the most unloved creatures on earth: snakes. What man would share those interests?

Jace Constant is doing research for his new book, but he won’t be staying long. Blake’s Folly is hell on earth. He’s disgusted by desert dust on his fine Italian shoes, and dog hair on his cashmere sweaters. As for snakes, he doesn’t only despise them–they terrify him.

So how is it possible that each time Alice and Jace meet, the air sizzles? Still, it looks like this relationship is doomed before it even starts.

Meet Killer and Noodle from All About Charming Alice, and Desert Rose

Nickname: They have no nicknames — but why would they need them with such original monikers?

    Gender: Male dogs

Species: A strange mixture of anything that happened to be passing through town

    Physical description of Killer

“The dog was large–very large. Its bulbous head seemed to sway on a sagging neck. Its legs were long, knotted, spindly, and its ribs wanted to punch through a dull, ratty-looking coat. Yet, ugly though it was, the damn thing still had appeal.”

    Physical description of Noodle

“The creature in question was the size of a very large shepherd, and it had rough unappealing fur of a splotchy beige-ish color. It also had the whiskers of a terrier, pointed ears, a corkscrew tail, and huge hairy paws. It was horribly ugly.”

Killer’s relationship to the main character:

In All About Charming Alice, Killer is the abandoned dog Jace brings to Alice’s dog shelter.

    Relationship to main character:

Alice takes Killer in, and he joins all the other abandoned dogs living with her. But she protects snakes, too.

    Relationship to the villain/antagonist:

When Alice is aggressed by a man who runs snake shows, Jace, much to his own surprise, comes to her rescue.

    Where this furbaby came from:

Killer was found wandering along the desert highway in Nevada

Noodle’s relationship to the main character: In Desert Rose, Noodle is brought to Rose’s secondhand shop by her friend Alice who thinks she needs protection.

Relationship to the villain/antagonist: There’s no villain. Jonah loves any animal, and if Rose has adopted a dog, that’s fine with him.

Where this furbaby came from: He was abandoned by a family that no longer wanted him.

What inspired you to create these characters?

Meet Killer and Noodle from All About Charming Alice and Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner @JarleneCuliner @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsIn All About Charming Alice, I wanted to present snakes, especially rattlers, in a positive light. I know many people have an instinctive fear of them, but I think that fear can be lessened when learning about such creatures. Unless they are threatened, snakes are certainly not aggressive, and having a herpetologist as my main character was the best way to explain that. We need snakes; they play such an important role in the natural world, yet they are persecuted.

Of course dogs are equally important in my books. I rescue dogs — and snakes, birds, rabbits, mice, snails, or any creature that needs help — and so several creatures always make guest appearances in my tales.

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

All my main characters love animals. I wouldn’t really want to write about people who didn’t.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

Animals bring my main characters together.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

Who doesn’t like big, sloppy, affectionate dogs? And the fact that all the dogs in these books are rescue animals, certainly strikes a chord with many readers. As for snakes, I hope people will start to see them in another light.

Please share an interesting fact or tidbit about one sort of furbaby.

Even though they are loners, snakes meet up with others and spend winters in a hibernaculum or hibernation hole. Baby snakes even follow their mother’s scent to get to these holes. Inside some of the largest hibernacula, you can find hundreds of snakes as well as the other creatures they share the space with, such as tortoises.

Describe a humorous incident involving the animal character.

One morning, before Jace knows that Alice is a herpetologist, he goes into her study with the intention of charming her. And just when he’s contemplating bending down to kiss her, he catches sight of a photo on her desk — the photo of a large rattler. All thoughts of seduction disappear, and terrified, he can’t move away quickly enough.

Which, if any of the pets in your writing are modeled after your own pets? In what way?

Meet Killer and Noodle from All About Charming Alice and Desert Rose by J Arlene Culiner @JarleneCuliner @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsYou have to know dogs to be able to write about them. My own dogs are former strays. I found Yellow wandering along the road, just like Killer in All About Charming Alice. Virgule was an abandoned dog, just like Noodle in Desert Rose, and he ended up at the local SPA. I fell in love with him immediately because he is just too big, and too cute. I also have two indoor cats Petit Chat and Mocky (my garden is a registered bird and butterfly reserve, so cats can’t go outside and kill things). One cat was abandoned in the middle of the village; the other I adopted from the SPA.

What do your pets do when you are writing?

The dogs all come to where I’m working, lie down around my desk and look sorrowful because I’m not out walking them. The cats drape themselves over my papers and keyboard.

What do you feed your pets?

Dry kibble, but the dogs also love apples, pears, nuts, pumpkin, bread, and anything else tasty.

Describe a toy or favorite item your pet loves.

Virgule loved chewing and demolishing plastic: electrical plugs, my cell phone, my computer transformer, plastic casing on wiring. Thankfully, as soon as I found Yellow on the road and adopted her, Virgule abandoned plastic.

The Mighty Finn by Holly Bargo

    Genre Contemporary

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

Meet Mike from The Mighty Finn

    Full name: Mickey Finn

    Nickname: Finn

    Gender: Male

    Species: Canine

Physical description: Black and white harlequin Great Dane

    Relationship to main character: Pet/savior/confident/protector

Relationship to the villain/antagonist: There really is no one villain in this story

Where this furbaby came from: A breeder

How do other characters react to or interact with this furbaby?

All characters in the book interact with Finn. One of the running themes within the story is that wherever Charlotte goes, Finn goes, too. Anyplace Finn isn’t welcome Charlotte doesn’t go.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

One reviewer called The Mighty Finn a combination of two love stories: 1) the relationship between a woman and her dog and 2) the relationship between a woman and a man. That pretty much describes it.

In the story, Charlotte is physically and emotionally scarred from a horrific experience. Finn was crucial in saving her and he continues to protect her from all threats, while serving as her constant companion, emotional support, confidante, and friend. There was a time in my life when the only friends I had were my dog and my horse. Charlotte doesn’t have a horse, but this dog for her is what my dog was for me at that time, only more so.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

I think Finn is the dog we all wish we had, regardless of breed. He’s not perfect—food left on kitchen countertops overcomes his ability to resist it—but he’s totally wonderful as well as housebroken. I have a Great Dane and she’s … well … timid. Finn, however, is utterly devoted to Charlotte, protective of her, and still gentle enough to play with children.

Deceased author Robert B. Parker once described his famous character Spenser as an enhanced version of himself. Spenser ages through the series even as Parker aged in the writing of the books. He said that if he could do A, then Spenser could do A plus 5. In the same manner, Finn is my dog’s A plus 5, very real yet enhanced.

Please share an interesting fact or tidbit about this furbaby.

A bitch can incubate offspring from two different males at the same time. That’s where Finn’s name comes in, an old fashioned reference of having been slipped a Mickey Finn. Finn’s dam had an oddball puppy in a litter, one obviously sired by a different dog.

Describe a humorous incident involving the animal character.

Early in the book when Charlotte and Finn are playing with a Frisbee on the beach, the dog crashes into the romantic hero, Eric. I have long loved Great Danes and currently own one. For supposedly graceful, dignified dogs, they’re often quite goofy and clumsy. In this scene, it wasn’t difficult for me to imagine the big dog at his goofiest paying more attention to the toy than to his environment, making the tangle of man and dog realistic and worth a laugh that could have been viewed on America’s Funniest Home Videos. Of course, Eric at the time reacts badly and doesn’t accept Charlotte’s mortified apology.

    About Selina Kyle

This post is called Fiction Furbaby, but perhaps your own pet does not have fur. If you have a pet that has fins, wings, scales, or other features, please tell us about them here.

Which, if any of the pets in your writing are modeled after your own pets? In what way?

Finn wasn’t really modeled upon a specific pet I had—and the Great Dane I have now hadn’t been born when I wrote this story—but he is based on what I’d imagine the most wonderful Great Dane to be like.

What do your pets do when you are writing?

Depends. I have six cats and one dog. The cats primarily sleep, eat, and antagonize each other. Occasionally, they visit me. The dog sleeps, eats, and constantly wants in or out. Several times a day she begs for attention.

What’s the most unusual pet you ever had?

The most unusual pet I ever had wasn’t really mine. It was more like a family pet: a wild mud puppy. When I was a kid, we had newts. After a few years, they all died. My oldest brother found a salamander-like animal and brought it into the house. We were fascinated and immediately adopted it as a pet. We cuddled with it, fed it insects, and generally treated it like a family member for the next couple of months until a neighbor saw it and informed my mother that it was a mud puppy and poisonous. So, we had to let it go.

Where did you find your pet?

My current dog came to us from a family who decided they no longer wanted a big dog.

My husband, older son, and I had gone out to dinner the night after Thanksgiving when my husband received a text from one of his staff. He could have simply not responded, replied with a “no,” or have declined to mention it to me. But he held up his cell phone and showed me a photo of a black Great Dane whose family wanted to rehome. We were without a dog at that time—and I had no intention of getting another dog. However, he knew I had a soft spot for Great Danes.

To make a long story short, I said we’d take her. That was two years ago. We learned that her first family had adopted her as a tiny puppy. Their son was five years old at the time and a comic book fan. He named her after Catwoman.

What do you feed your pet?

Selina gets better quality kibble. I make an effort to avoid feeding her anything with wheat, corn, or soy, because dogs don’t digest those ingredients well.

Describe a toy or favorite item your pet loves.

Selina has one toy, a rope tug toy. We’ve tried enticing her with other toys, like rawhide bones, but she has no interest in them. She won’t play tug-of-war with her tug toy, but she does flip it up and toss it around and she’ll chew on it. She knows that toy is hers and where it belongs (i.e., not on the coffee table or my desk).

The Cat’s Out of the Bag by Cynthia Terelst

    Genre Contemporary Romance

Book heat level (based on movie ratings): R

One van. Two hearts. Thousands of kilometres.

Jesse’s a self-made billionaire who yearns to get away from his empty life and the money-hungry parasites who inhabit it. The plan? Go to Australia, tell no one about his money and find himself. Instead of finding just himself, he finds Evie, who is everything anyone should aspire to be. Now, what he aspires to be, is hers. But to be hers, he needs to tell her everything.

Evie has left her past behind. She has rebuilt herself, and her life, into one of happiness. After she meets Jesse, while volunteering at a cat shelter, memories of her past filter back in. She is stronger now and wants to trust him. But after all she has been through, is trust even possible?

The quest to find a cat a forever home leads them to travel across the country together. Can the close quarters drive them to open up to each other? Or will it drive them apart?

Meet Mike from The Cat’s Out of the Bag

    Full name: Mike

    Nickname: Mike

    Gender: M

    Species: Feline

Physical description: Domestic Shorthair, ginger, light green eyes

Relationship to main character: Lives at the cat shelter where the Evie volunteers

Where this furbaby came from: he was lost, a family found him in their backyard and surrendered him to the cat shelter. His was not microchipped, which meant his owners could not be contacted. His owners never came to find him.

Do you have any working or service animals in your stories? Tell us about them.

    No

What inspired you to create this character?

I volunteer as a foster carer for a local cat rescue. There are a few cats which are difficult to adopt – black cats and older cats. I wanted to write about an older cat to show people how sweet and intuitive they are.

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

Evie and Jesse both adore Mike. Jesse is drawn to Mike as soon as he meets him, showing how kind Jesse is.

What does the villain/antagonist think about this furbaby?

    N/A

How do other characters react to or interact with this furbaby?

Both Evie and Jesse enjoy spending time with Mike. When Evie introduces Jesse to Mike, she does it with affection. Mike is old, partly deaf and very wise. Evie and Jesse go to him at separate times to talk over their feelings. He might be partly deaf but he is a good listener and knows what’s going on.

    What does this furbaby eat?

The cats at the shelter eat good quality dry food and fresh meat. The chewing action required for the cats to eat fresh meat helps keep their teeth clean and healthy.

What is this furbaby’s natural habitat?

Mike has lived at the cat shelter for a year, waiting patiently for his forever home. He lives in a large enclosure with several other cats. They have cat scratch posts, toys to play with and hammocks to sleep in.

What does this furbaby add to the story?

Even though Mike can’t talk he offers the best advice. He helps bring Evie and Jesse together. Not to mention, he has an awesome personality.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

    He is gentle and intuitive.

Please share an interesting fact or tidbit about this furbaby.

If Mike had the ability to roll his eyes he definitely would.

    About Kimmy and Possum

Fiction Furbaby: Meet Mike from The Cat's out of the Bag by Cynthia Terelst @CynthiaTerelst @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsThis post is called Fiction Furbaby, but perhaps your own pet does not have fur. If you have a pet that has fins, wings, scales, or other features, please tell us about them here.

I have two cats, Kimmy and Possum. I have had up to five foster kittens in my home at one time. That was a lot of hard work, I prefer two to three.

Which, if any of the pets in your writing are modeled after your own pets? In what way?

Mike reminds me of Kimmy who is also old. She waits patiently for her food. She sits and waits until it is served. Possum, on the other hand, demands her food and is in your face until she gets it.

What do your pets do when you are writing?

Sleep, usually. When I have foster kittens, they like to be close, sometimes walking over the keyboard or using it as a pillow.

What’s the most unusual pet you ever had?

Probably hermit crabs. Once we left our dog inside with them while we said goodbye to guests. When we came back in, she had one of them in her mouth. She let it go, but it died a few days after.

Where did you find your pet?

Kimmy came from a local refuge and Possum was a foster fail through a local rescue.

What do you feed your pet?

Good quality dry food and fresh meat. It can get quite expensive when foster kittens are in the house. They eat like teenage boys.

Describe a toy or favorite item your pet loves.

Kimmy loves soft toys; she carries them around the house. Possum is not into toys; she is more food and pat orientated.

    Tender Misdemeanors by Alana Lorens

    Genre Romantic suspense

Book heat level (based on movie ratings) PG

Caryn Orlane has law enforcement in her blood; her father was a cop, and his father, too. She’s a federal agent in northwest Montana, protecting the old forests and keeping the peace.

Levi Bradshaw also believes in protecting the forests, but has a very different MO. He’s the leader of a group of eco-warriors, determined to save the trees of the Bitterroot by legal—and illegal—means.

When they meet in the woods at gunpoint, their encounter ignites a spark of interest, despite operating on opposite sides of the law. When their worlds turn on them, they only grow closer. If they don’t work together, can either survive?

Meet Niabi, Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern, Pete and Ophelia from Tender Misdemeanors

Full name Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are brothers

    Gender male

    Species dogs, Rhodesian Ridgebacks

Physical description The hallmark of this breed is the ridge on the back.

This is formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. It starts just behind the shoulders and continues down to just before the hips. At the beginning of this ridge are two identical crowns (whorls) directly opposite each other.

The Rhodesian ridgeback is a strong, muscular, balanced and athletic dog. He is capable of great endurance with a fair amount of speed. Males range in height from 25 to 27″ (85 pounds, 38 kilograms) and females from 24 to 26 inches (70 pounds, 32 kilograms). Known for an even, dignified temperament, the ridgeback is devoted and affectionate to his master and reserved with strangers.

Relationship to main character The hero’s long-time pets and protectors

Fiction Furbaby Meet Niabi, Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern, Pete and Ophelia from Tender Misdemeanors by Alana Lorens @RobsRescues #RLFblog #PetsFull name Niabi

    Gender female

    Species Green iguana

Physical description A herbivore, it has adapted significantly with regard to locomotion and osmoregulation as a result of its diet. It grows to 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in length from head to tail, although a few specimens have grown more than 2 metres (6.6 ft) with bodyweights upward of 20 pounds (9.1 kg). Commonly found in captivity as a pet due to its calm disposition and bright colors, it can be very demanding to care for properly.

Relationship to main character The heroine’s companion, shares space in the motorhome where Caryn lives

    Full name Ophelia

    Gender female

    Species dog, springer spaniel

Physical description English Springer Spaniels are tough, muscular hunters standing 19 to 20 inches at the shoulder and weighing between 40 and 50 pounds. She is brown and white, her ears are long and lush, and the kindly, trusting expression of the eyes is a cherished hallmark of the breed. Springers move with a smooth, ground-covering stride. Bred to work closely with humans, Springers are highly trainable people-pleasers. They crave company and are miserable when neglected.

Relationship to main character The hero’s adopted pet, lamed from being hit by a car

    Full name Pete

    Gender male

    Species dog, black lab

Physical description Pete is about two feet tall, weighing 60 pounds. The dense, hard coat is black, his head wide, the eyes glimmer with kindliness, and the thick, tapering “otter tail” seems to be forever signaling his innate eagerness. Labs are famously friendly. They are companionable housemates who bond with the whole family, and they socialize well with neighbor dogs and humans alike.

Relationship to main character The hero took him in when he was abandoned by the hero’s long-time friend

What inspired you to create this character?

As a pet owner myself, I know what a good relationship with an animal can do for people. Levi has a big heart and loves to be in the outdoors, so having a group of dogs is perfect for him. The rugged Ridgebacks are well-trained and help him protect his Montana land from intruders.

Caryn isn’t traditional, and neither is owning an iguana—they suit each other.

What does the main character think about this furbaby?

Levi counts on his dogs to be his family—friends, brothers and other extended support.

    What does this furbaby eat?

Levi feeds his dogs a special mix They each get one scoop kibble, half a can of wet food, and a hard-boiled egg.

Niabi, on the other hand, gets a mix of fruits and vegetables similar to what they would get in the jungle.

What is this furbaby’s natural habitat?

Niabi would live in a tropical forest—in the Amazon, perhaps, or south Florida, because of their need for temperature regulation, it needs to be a warm environment in the wild.

The Rhodesian Ridgebacks were bred in Africa to fight off lions. They’re tough, strong dogs.

What about this furbaby will readers like, and why?

I think you learn a lot about people the way they treat their animals, or even strange animals on the street. When Levi and Caryn (and a few others) deal with the animals, we can understand a lot about their hearts and souls.

Describe a humorous incident involving the animal character.

Niabi , when being transported back to the Candy Cane house, is nervous and pees on Levi while he’s driving. Caryn jokes that he’s been “baptized” into the family—he’s not so sure he’s happy about it.

Which, if any of the pets in your writing are modeled after your own pets? In what way?

Actually, none. I’m a natural cat person, but I’ve made a study of friends and their dogs in order to make these babies come alive.

What do your pets do when you are writing?

I have a basket on my desk, and there’s usually a cat in it while I’m working—sometimes two! My oldest kitty also takes a position on top of the computer where the heat comes out to keep herself warm. Several others will be nearby on my bed or their cat tree, always wanting to be near.

What’s the most unusual pet you ever had?

A frog that I rescued from our science class dissection program.

Where did you find your pet?

All my kitties are rescues—Ziggy, Reba and Clarice are kittens I fostered into grownups.

What do you feed your pet?

Regular cat food. But their favorite is chicken stolen from my plate!

Describe a toy or favorite item your pet loves.

They love those little plastic springs! They’re light to push around and can be carried out of the other cats’ reach.

I foster for FurEver Friends Animal Rescue Network, a non- profit, NO-KILL, volunteer rescue committed to improving the welfare of community stray, abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens. They have been in operation since 2002 serving the Buncombe County, NC area and surrounding counties, providing a NO-KILL alternative to government shelters.

“Our goals include an active TNVR program currently working to feed, trap, spay/neuter, vaccinate and return at 13 colonies in West Asheville (NC); to provide an alternative destination for cats that can no longer be kept by their owners, while at the same time educating the owners in regards to proper care and problem solving. We do our best to help all those that come to us or try to recommend alternatives if we cannot help them immediately. We assist families with loved ones who are ill and can no longer care for their pet. We also assist families that have generously taken in a forgotten stray and are looking for a permanent home. We provide sanctuary for pets whose owners are in abusive personal situations and need temporary placement until they can be reclaimed, and for cats who have themselves been abused.”
